Here's a quick tournament report.
Rnd 1 Cullen Cox- Hide and Seek Control Cullen is a very solid player and to be honest, I really dont like playing against his deck. It is a pure hate deck, and the hide and seeks are very annoying. The biggest key when playing against this version of H/S control is to win game 1, because it is a slow deck, but it has lots of answers... Game 1: I drain a confidant on turn 2, and use the drain mana to cast cunning wish for extirpate, targeting his confidants. This really hurts him as I have eliminated his draw engine. He gets down a couple of morph creatures(exalted angels) and procedes to beat on me for a while until he gets enought mana to flip it. I ice the angel a few times to stay alive and tinker in the big guy at 4 life, he promptly gets swords, but i gain 11 life, and continue to take beats. I drop a guildmage, and have reset in my hand hoping to get a draw spell...at 2 life i draw a brainstorm and on his declare attackers I reset and copy it floating a million blue mana, then brainstorm and copy it...drawing ancestral recal. I then recal targeting him a million times. 1-0 Game 2: I hold off all his threats loosing 4 life to mana burn and a fetch, and I hit his bob and him with a fire, drop a mage. Cullen scoops it up as we hit the 1 minute mark, because he cant finish me off in turns. 2-0 Side note: Both my kids Steven(12) and Jonathan(10) win Round 1 against Brandon and Brett, whom we rode up with. The team formerly known as Shake an bake, now known as the Ga branch of team arsenal, battle it out. Goanos faimly 3-0!
Round 2: Steven Goanos-Oath I get paired against my oldest son Steven who is playing Oath. The last 4 T1 tourneys when Steven has played oath he has made top 8. I do have a couple of advantages against him, mostly being Im his dad, and he hasnt beaten me,yet.I better enjoy it while I can, because I have no doubt as he gets a little older, the tide will turn. Game 1: I jump out the gates and get an early IGM and Fire him out on turn 4. Tolarian + lots of artifacts = nice.1-0 Game 2:This one isnt even close. Steven mulls to 3 and I keep a 7 hander. To make a long story short, I end up copying a ancestral recal 3 times to draw 12 cards. Steven scoops and is very discouraged. I give him a pep talk and tell him he still can make top 8 hang in there, and just have fun.2-0 Jonathan looses this round to stax but is having fun playing a deck I literaly threw together Saturday morning.
Round 3: Albert Kyle-Manaless Ichorid. Albert is a solid player and a great guy. I roomed with him at the last SCGPower 9, and we played a few games as he showed me his manaless ichorid build, and I showed him Xerox. We played day 2 I ran bomberman, and he beat me 2-1. At the last Raleigh NC tourney Bert pulled out a great win against me after i played ETW for 16 tokens, he took a big hit then was able to combo me out with gifts...I was hoping this would be pay back. :0) Game 1: Bert mulls to 2, not a good sign, he plays a bazzar dumps 1 dredger, cabal therapy and an Ichorid. I open turn 1 pithing needle naming Bazaar. I then cunning wish for extirpate and take his ichorids. A DSC joins the party and Bert scoops.1-0 Game2: I keep a 1 land hand, holding a DSC, FoW and a brainstorm, Bert serum powder mulls to 7, leads with a bazaar. I topdeck a needle...We play draw go for a while, then I finaly draw another mana source, drop a Guildmage. He attempts to chain of vapor my needle, which is FOW. That was the only damage I took this game. I end up tinkering in another needle naming bazaar. I extirpate an ichorid, cunning wish for an extirpate removing his dread return, and draw another one taking his myr servitor, all the while IGM beats for 2. I finish him off with fire. 2-0 Side note: Steven wins, Jonathan looses to Cullen.
Rnd4-Cody Vinci-Drain Tendrils Both Cody and I are the only undefeateds and we ID. Steven beats FCG and Jonathan wins as well. Steven sits at 3-1,Jonathan at 2-2.
Rnd5-Brett Mathews-Xerox We ID, Brett makes it in, Steven IDs with Cullen, who is 3-1 as well, assuring both a top 8 spot. Jonathan has to play Chris Bright who is running Ichorid, for a chance to make top 8, he is currently sitting at 9th place, and doesnt think he can beat Ichorid. Jonathan puts out an early trike, wastes Chris only land, and drops a Jugg to seal game 1. I nervously pace back and forth, hoping Jonathan can win and make top 8. Game 2 is probably more nerve racking for me, as I watch several play mistakes Jonathan makes, but hes nervous as well. Jonathan had a trike out, Chirs had a putrid imp and was putting ichorids into play...Jonathan finally saw what he was doing wrong killed some Ichorids with trike, drew a dup and literaly said "bye bye" to the imp. I was outside pacing back and forth hoping Jon could pull it out, I didnt want to stand over him as he played and make him more nervous than he was. Jonathan ended up winning and making the 7th seed.
Top 8: Robert Sutherland-The Mountains win Again. Ive played Robert 2 times, once with control slaver, which I won, and once with 5gush tog, which he won. Robert has done very well at the last few tourneys and is a solid player. Game1:He drops an early null rod, and burns and kills anything I play. He beats me down with Welders, factories, and heck even the kitchen sink, this one isnt even close, as I draw absolutly nothing. 0-1. My first loss...frowns Game2: I think I end up drawing every land in my deck. I find 0 brainstorms,0 Ak's,0 IGM. Its looking bleak as he beats me down with a welder and a grunt. He also has a crypt on boad. I finaly get a IGM whom takes up farming. But the good news is theres a swords in the yard! After taking a hit from the duo of welder and Grunt, I time walk, then tinker up the big guy. I then play will, hoping to entice him into crypting me, so DSC cant be welded out, and killing his grunt the next upkeep. He doesnt crypt me, so I walk, fire his welder.I cant swing in with the Iron Giant because Im at 5 life, I need to stay out of burn level. I end up extirpating his swords, bouncing the grunt and swing for the win. 1-1. Game3: I draw land, I draw moxes,I draw land. I see 0 brainstorms,0 AK's,0 Intuition,0 cunning wish,0 anything. When I die I have enough mana on the table to cast anything in my deck.1-2 Both Steven and Jonathan loose in the top 8 as well, but we all had fun, and Arsenal took home the prize.
Props: Steven and Jonathan for making top8 Extirpate for being amazing. AJ and Chi for hosting the events Every one who made it out to sling some spells. Brett,Cody,Albert for making top4 And not hitting any of the 20+ deer we saw on the way home!
Slops: For my deck crapping out on me in the top 8, I wish I could have made game 3 a contest. Oh well theres always next time.
