With Chalice of the Void in play and set to 1, will the replicated spells from Shattering Spree be countered?  My own logic tells me that the copied spells will be countered since they will have a converted mana cost of 1.  HOWEVER, and there's always a however, Ask The Judge on StarCity Games says otherwise.  That the copied (replicated) spells will not be countered.

My own little investigation into the Magic Rulebook tells me the following....

1. A spell is an object
2. A copy of a spell is a spell (therefore a copied spell is an object)
3. A copied object has a converted mana cost of the original object.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

In the future, please include the Oracle text of the cards involved.

Chalice of the Void
Artifact
 {X} {X}
Rules Text (Oracle):  Chalice of the Void comes into play with X charge counters on it.
Whenever a player plays a spell with converted mana cost equal to the number of charge counters on Chalice of the Void, counter that spell.

Shattering Spree
Sorcery
 {R}
Rules Text (Oracle):  Replicate  {R} (When you play this spell, copy it for each time you paid its replicate cost. You may choose new targets for the copies.)
Destroy target artifact.

The copies are not played, they just go on the stack, so the Chalice doesn't counter them.

Sorry about the original post without Oracle Text.  I'll be sure to include it in the future.

Thanks for the answer.  I feel like an idiot.  I run 4 sanctioned tournaments a week and have to answer questions regarding "playing a spell" and "putting spells on the stack" constantly.  You would think I would have figured that one out.  Thanks again.
