Hi all.
Now that I have the date for the next TMD Open set and some preliminary details posted, I'd like to get your feedback and ideas about aspects of it. Think of this as a "You make the card" but for TMD Open.
Every few days (so check back regularly) I will ask you to weigh in this thread on some issue. I'll use these results to give you the best possible event I can.
Additionally, TMD Open has been know for being the innovator of tourney procedures. Be it serving cake and cookies to 180 people, trying out cutting to top 16, offering more side events then you can shake a stick at, having a team competition, etc. TMD Open is the place for radical ideas.
As such, I'd love for any crazy ideas you may have. No matter how weird, strange, etc. It doesn't have to be just a unique format for a side event. It could be anything having to do with entry fees, crazy competitions, etc. Send me your ideas via PM. I won't use every idea that comes my way, but you may just be the person who is responsible for a new trend at TMD Open(and you will receive credit for your idea publically).

Something totally off-topic but silly considering your topic line, what about the winner of each Wbury gets to make a special promo card that can be used in side events/day two/etc. and can be proxied up by anyone, something small but neat. Further restraining, make it a creature. 5-Color has this, where the winner of worlds comes up with a new card that is then tournament-legal. I dunno, it's a silly idea but it seems like something innovative for the event.

I like the idea, but it should be approved by a few people before releasing it into the public. Since TMD's are radical anyway, pave the way for future vintage events. We aren't sanctioned anyways.

You should shore up the prize support for everyone who makes it to elimination rounds. Like spreading out the support over the places rather than having it top heavy as it usually is. Even on day 2, which is usually bigger than a scg event, but only first or second really gets you anything; whereas 5-8 got 3 timespiral packs last time, after wading through a fairly large field.
I'll make it no matter the prize support, but I think strong prize support is good for encouraging those who are not as dedicated, which is good for Waterbury, the store that hosts, and the community.

I've played it both ways, and I have to say, the point system was great. My vote definately goes to the more flexible prize structure.

What is Duplicate sealed? Is that like the urza-block commons thing you did last time? If so, I thought that was cool. My only problem was that the card pool was made known. I think it would be better if it was a mystery. You could anounce it like they do on Iron Chef and then give like 50 mins for each team to construct decks from the given cardpool.
Or even just have it a mishmash of cards (the same cardpool for each team) but not really well defined criteria for cards. Just like "well I have 24 tarpans so each team gets 3..." (assuming 8 team max). So effectively each team gets an identical box of 250 to 400 from which the decks must be built.

I like the idea of a duplicate sealed mystery set. Everyone has an even advantage going into the event- Dave

I'm undecided at the moment, so many good choices.
First off, I love cool formats, so I wouldn't want vintage or legacy. Type 4 is always good, though. As for duplicate sealed, I'm for it, but on two conditions: 1) we don't know what the cards are before hand, it takes a lot of the skill out, and 2) we do something with a theme a lot cooler than "Legacy Commons". That last one was kind of boring because it violated both rules. Everyone had the same three decks, and the decks were pretty much boring, imo.
As for alternative formats, I'm a huge fan of the Rotisserie Draft of the first sets we did for the finals of TMC. That was a lot of fun, and though I'm not sure we could accommodate a large number of players with one pool, I really loved the games that resulted from that. It was great. I would be all for another one of those.
As for the "create your own card", that seems awesome. I think that the winner of the side event should do that, actually, to add some spice. You would have to make a sort of council of 10 people or something to alter/vote on it to make sure its not stupid, and it would add even more spice to an already awesome tournament.
Whatever you do, this TMD is looking to be one of the best yet, I'm pretty excited about it.

I wouldn't mind the mystery duplicate sealed or a type 4 tournament

As long as the side event isn't a normal format (type 2, standard, legacy, vintage, etc) I'll be happy.

I won't be going, but I will say the 2 tournaments that I had the most fun were a build your own block tournament and a mirage/planeshift/exodus tournament.

[obvious]Do you count?[/obvious] NO. I didn't do this as a narcasistic action...I get as much out of being in this Vintage Community as the next guy and there are many people who I feel deserve recognition that don't normal get it. As such, I want to recognize those people. It means more and is less baised, though, if I get everyone's feedback on who that person should be. Please PM me...I want to get a large enough sample size of responses.

To really get a good sample of opinions about who should be recognized as a Vintage contributer, I need more votes. If you haven't yet, please send me a short PM of who you think should be recognized. Thanks.
