http://mtgsalvation.com/837-combating-painters-servant-in-vintage.html

This is the second article about Painter's Servant in Vintage in a short series I'm writing for MTG Salvation. The first part examined the emerging decklists and shells deckbuilders have been using thus far, and this article takes a look at a few ways to combat these strategies. As the Painter's Servant combo is more fully explored and integrated into the tournament circuit, people will begin to have to start seriously preparing to beat it, as it will increasingly show up in tournaments around the globe.

Let me know what you think, and what else you'd like to see addressed in future articles about Painter's Servant (aside from how the Painter players will combat hate; that is already going to be addressed).

Jaco: these are very nice articles, and I say that even if there was no mention of my name in them.  They are thoughtful, well written, and good for beginners and experienced players to enjoy.   They also alleviate the requests I've gotten to write about Painter's Servant decks.   Keep it up.

Thanks for the article Jason, it was good read. As an aside, I think Painter has a very positive impact on Vintage. It has created an entirely new archetype: aggro-combo. It allows decks to hedge more strongly against blue without reducing the interactive element of the game (like Flash and Ichorid). Vintage certainly has a new, very exciting staple.

An interesting article for sure.  I hadn't really thought of just running a thousand ancient grudges and stuff, but I guess if you aren't running the painter yourself it might be effective.

One thing I've been kinda unsure is how one should side in the painter mirror.  It seems like it has similarities to an Oath mirror, in that you both can abuse the actual Painter himself equally well, and it doesn't matter whose side he is on for grindstones and blasts.  Do you board out your own scarecrows and go for a straight Tinker plan or what?

Heya,

Good article, JACO.  I'm not sure we'll really see people putting 2 DCS and/or a Gaea's Blessing into their Sideboard unless Painter-stone really really takes off, but the deck suggestions you make about GAT, Ichorid, and Next Level Doomsday are really good.  Thanks for the good read! Smile

Peace,

Great article JACO.  It was very intesting and stimulating.  I've been tinkering around with painter for a bit and I found you gave some real insight to the deck.  You also got me thinking outside the box on combating all top tier decks in vintage (regardless of which deck you run), and maybe going a different direction with painter.
Once again, very good.
