Adventures' latest tourney had a turnout of only 13 due to possibly a large influx of tournies in NorCal lately, but also possibly due to the 100+ degree weather.

Anyways, those that showed up were the best of the best of NorCal.
The meta included Shops (me), Doomsday x3, Bomberman 5000(w/daze guy from shadowmoor), Flash, Ichorid, Control Slaver, DeezNaughts, and PainterMask combo w/control shell.

4 Rounds of swiss with cut to top 4 are

Luis Scott-Vargas DoomsDay
Jeff Neilson (LotusHead) Gilded Stax
Michael Klemic DeezNaughts
JeffTheFob Huang UWB Fish thing (either Feinsten or Messiano style. I don't know which)

Luis and JeffTheFob are teammates and Klemic destroyed me 2-0 after we had some friendly matches beforehand where I destroyed him. doh!  Klemic had only the remotest chance of making top 4.  Like hell had to actually freeze over for him to get in, but Webster somehow ended his final match in a draw (doomsday vs burn).

I FORGOT to grab the lists from the shop before I left, so I don't have those yet.  Hopefully the guys at Adventures will take notice and post them, and I don't have regular internet access yet (i'm at work) and haven't figured out how to get pics online here yet (I have some memory card with USB port, but this computer doesn't recognize it. doh!).  More soon. plus my mini-report...

Wait wait....Three Doomsday, and I'm not being counted amongst them (due to not, you know, showing up)(or playing Doomsday, but that's where I've been counted before)?  Was it Junior again? Anyway, congrats to the top 4 and to Klemic, for his almost Scott-Vargas-ian number of top 8/4 finishes in the past month or so.

The Meta:

Kory Redmond - Tyrant Oath
Jeff Neilson - 5-c stax
Junior Cervantes - Doomsday
Austin Martinez - Bomberman w/ cursecatcher, daze, REB.
Jeff Huang - UWB fish
David Ochoa - Doomsday
Luis Scott-Vargas - Doomsday
Mike Klemic - Deez Noughts
Dr_Tongue - Painter
Mike Rosenthal - Ichorid
Someone - Control Slaver
Someone - Rb sligh w/ bob, duress, thoughtseize, extirpate, chalice, ankh, bolt, fireblast, magus of the moon.
Someone - Flash

The list I played:

Doomsday:
4 gush
4 brainstorm
3 ponder

4 force of will
3 thoughtseize
2 duress
1 chain of vapor
1 rebuild

4 merchant scroll
1 demonic tutor
1 mystical tutor
1 vampiric tutor

2 doomsday
1 ancestral recall
1 fastbond
1 necropotence
1 time walk
1 yawgmoth's will

1 research/development
1 tendrils of agony

4 dark ritual
1 black lotus
1 lotus petal
1 mox emerald
1 mox jet
1 mox sapphire

3 flooded strand
3 polluted delta
2 island
2 tropical island
3 underground sea

Sideboard:
4 leyline of the void
4 dark confidant
3 quirion dryad
2 extirpate
1 hurkyl's recall
1 gaea's blessing

There are a few minor changes from the list that I played last time:
- I went from 4 duress/1 thoughtseize to 3 thoughtseize/2 duress in an to help against painter decks. Ultimately 3 thoughtseize felt a bit taxing on my life total.
- Rebuild replaced hurkyl's recall for flexability reasons. Being able to cycle rebuild away when not playing against workshops seemed better than being 1 mana cheaper. One game was won because the slot was rebuild since I was able to cycle into my doomsday pile.
- The sideboard changed a bit. Extirpate didn't stand up to criticism. Gaea's blessing against painter wasn't tested enough so its value is still unknown.

I went 2-1-1:
Lose vs. Bomberman 1-2; In fairness, my draws were very poor in the 2 games that I lost.
Win vs. Painter 2-0;
Win vs Doomsday 2-1;
Draw vs Rb sligh 1-1; I took too much time in game 1 which I lost. It was complicated to say the least.

I had some notes taken on my first round but the scratch paper never made it back to the house for some reason. Perhaps it melted to my car seat under the intense sun's rays, even @ 6:30 or so when I dropped round 3.

I got to play with yet another deck though, most of the one's I play are 10-15 cards difference depending on the kill. I missed Duress the most and left it out. I ran 2x Misdirections over Mana Drain slots, 4x REBS MD , and no Gifts. I put 3x Thirst For Knowledge in it to dump extra Painters/Moxen or the DSC, giving me 7 ways to rid DSC from my hand rather than 4x Brainstorms.

Round One 1-0 (2-0)
Mike Klemic - Deez Noughts
Our two games were rather intense with both of us nearly in topdeck mode game 2. I managed to keep EE from becoming active a couple times by REB'ing it and Tutoring for a Shattering to take it out as well.I wanted to go for Will but had the lone Sea on board during my Upkeep Vampiric. I had a Force and a land to pitch so keeping my Painter protected was #1 priority. TFK gave me the Grindstone I needed and the FoW backup to his topdeck.
Mike's a good player and has had my # the last 2 Sactown dates so it's nice to finally score a win on some different player's.

Round Two 1-1 (0-2)
David Ochoa - Doomsday
David kicked my butt both games and the absence of Duress in my MD didn't make me feel better going into the match. At one point I had 2 REB's in hand early and FoW/Misdirection and one land and a Brainstorm. His first spell of the match was a Pionder or something and in Hindsight maybe I should have used the REBS more aggressively even at these early spells. I saved the mana for an EOT BS or something not yielding me much. His Doomsday pile was perfect as I used an early force pitching Misdirection and had one in my hand yet. He used Brainstorm to get Duress/Recall from the top 3 assuring his Recall would stick, and wound up DT for Tendrils for 20 or so (maybe 22 I forget).
His lone Chain of Vapor was able to hit my Painter just after I finally did activate the Grinstone our next game (again no notes=foggy memory)

Round 3 1-2
Someone - Rb sligh w/ bob, duress, thoughtseize, extirpate, chalice, ankh, bolt, fireblast, magus of the moon.
(I believe his name is Mike as well (?) I've played him a few times at Adventures in the last few tourneys. Nice guy, I've had his # the last few times, today he got me with his heavy Gush.dec hate)

Game one he Thoughtseizes me turn one and I Misdirect it seeing Wasteland,Wasteland?,Card,Card,Burn,Ankh or something. I myself have a Tropical, Mystical, Gush,Mana Crypt after I pitch Gush #2 to Misdirection. I draw no land so I decide to hold my loner. I draw the fetchland next turn and fetch an Island and say go. He plays a Strip Mine and I forgot to Mystic in response for Tinker. D'oh that could have been Tropical/Crypt into big dude but I phail under the pressure and heat.
Game 2 isn't much better with him having a Pyroblast for any blue spell I want to cast. My SB was totally screwed against a Red h8 deck with no BEBS in it or anything that could have remotely saved me. I did Gush in the match up but the manabase wound up being crippled where I'd rather untap 4 lands rather than 2 against that deck. Nice job , I was hoping you'd get to the T4 with your deck.

I've always include Rebuild in my MD over Hurkyl's as well in my combo builds. I like the fact that against Shop decks you can generate storm for yourself with it after you bounce their hate on your next turn. The cycle ability is ok but that's my main reason for using it. Nice job on yours and Klemic's strong finish after round one defeats. Those are the one's that always stress me out the most as it seems you have to "win out" sometimes to place well enough.

Hi all, this is Mike, the guy who was playing the R/B deck.  I debated between playing my usual variant of Fish and the Painter's Servant deck; in the end I decided to go with something different in the face of Gush-bond and tantalizingly low opponent life totals:

4 Dark Confidant
3 Magus of the Moon

4 Ankh of Mishra
3 Chalice of the Void

4 Duress
2 Thoughtseize
2 Extirpate
2 Pyroblast

4 Lightning Bolt
3 Fireblast
2 Shrapnel Blast
3 Price of Progress

1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor

1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Jet
1 Mana Crypt

1 Strip Mine
4 Wasteland
4 Badlands
4 Bloodstained Mire
1 Swamp
4 Mountain

Sideboard:
4 Leyline of the Void
2 Pithing Needle
2 Engineered Explosives
2 Pyroblast
2 Ingot Chewer
3 Pyrostatic Pillar

(I considered Faerie Macabre, but forgot about it when it was time to throw the sideboard together)

I ended up 2-1-1; should have made Top 4 but for some unfortunate (for me) events:

Round One 0-1 (0-2) - Jeff Huang (UWB Fish)

Game One I am on the draw with a hand that really wanted to be on the play: Mox, Bob, Chalice, Bolt, lands (i think).  Jeff proceeds to drop artifact mana and Meddling Mage naming Lightning Bolt (ouch), and eventually Grunt beats take it down.

Game Two I mull to four in search of mana.  My lone fetchland meets Aven Mindcensor, and that's pretty much it.  Not the best start on the day.

Round Two 1-1 (2-0) - Bye/Togo's Hot Pastrami Sandwich

The sandwich started off with some mild disruption (intense heat from being freshly made), but I proceeded to just chew it up the rest of the round.

Round Three 2-1 (2-0) - Dr_Tongue (Painter's Servant)

I meet Dr_Tongue yet again; always a friendly opponent and a good match, and I don't know exactly what he's playing but am pretty sure he's packing a Gush or two or four.

Game One I start off with Thoughtseize only to have it Misdirected back at me.  I have crazy mana disruption, and after a Strip Mine and Wastelands, Magus of the Moon beats down.  Later it is revealed that he could have Mystical Tutored into Tinker into something scary before Magus came down.

Game Two I still am not sure what he is playing, but I Duress him seeing Painter's Servant and some REB's.  Painter's Servant #1 comes down only to be struck by Lightning Bolt.  Painter's Servant #2 meets a similar fate.  Meanwhile Ankh is making fetchlands cost a painful five life.  After some more mana disruption, Bob shows up and beats for two, followed by double Shrapnel Blast and Fireblast to finish things off.

Round Three 2-1-1 (1-1) - David Ochoa (Doomsday)

Winner makes Top 4, and I know I am a huge underdog but hope for the best.  What was somewhat funny was the fact that the last time we were matched up, we just ID'd into Top 8.  Unfortunately this time the draw was unintentional.

Game One involved one of the longest turns ever.  After some mana problems, he ended up discarding a Gush, which I Extirpated.  Then, somehow, he starts chaining spells together and we stop keeping track of the storm count after 11.  YawgWill resolves and Research/Development returns Gush, and at this point I am thinking its over.  Meanwhile, one table down, Mike Klemic's opponent is going off with Flash (I lent him the deck before the tourney).  He has no chance at Top 4, however, and Klemic has an outside chance, so he just ends up conceding to Klemic anyway, much to my dismay.  The current turn is still going on, and at this point all the other matches are finished so everyone is gathered around watching turn four of our first game.  Eventually Fastbond comes down, and his life total is creeping within burn range, as I am holding Lightning Bolt and Fireblast with a Mountain and Badlands in play.  He is down to three cards, and I Bolt him.  Then he casts Ponder and I decide to Fireblast in response, hoping the two remaining cards are not FoW and a blue card.  Fireblast resolves and we go to the next game.  Despite the outcome of the game, the comeback was pretty impressive.

Game Two a Quirion Dryad comes down and grows to 4/4.  I burn a Fireblast on it, which fortunately takes care of it.  Then I made a huge misplay.  I Duress, seeing Tendrils, Recall, and some lands and other cards I don't remember.  I take Recall, and my next turn instead of Duressing away Tendrils, I drop Pyrostatic Pillar.  Then I realize I should have Duressed as he puts together a mini-Tendrils, taking him back to 20 life and putting me low.  I have Bob out, and every flip from Bob is either a land or artifact mana or 1cc.  I feel kinda bad as I had misplayed and am now lucksacking my way through more and more turns.  The game ends as I am at 1 life and he is at 3, and he mind tricks me into dropping a Bolt and taking two from Pillar (but my Bob flip for the turn would have done me in as well anyway).  Time is called and we haven't started the third game, so the match ends in a draw.

I find out soon afterwards that Klemic got into Top 4 just above me due to his opponent's concession; otherwise, I would've gotten in with the draw due to my tiebreakers.  That aside, I should have just won my match if I wanted to make Top 4 anyway, but its more fun to give the guy a hard time since I lent him a deck to play and his concession knocked me out of Top 4.  The day wasn't a complete loss though, as I traded for a Donate for my draft box and got to spend an afternoon playing Vintage.

Congrats to Top 4 and to LSV and Klemic on their split!

Pics!

Me vs Cory Redmond.  Chalice for (I think) 0 and 1 put a damper on his plans.  I topdecked like 3 appropriate lock pieces in a row… Crucible, Smoke Stack, Sphere of Resistance, etc…

Austin vs Ochoa.  DOOMSDAY!!! Thank god Dream Halls safely sits on the Restricted List with Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, Tinker, and Yawgmoth’s Will…

Huang on Santos Action.  Santos is a pimp for getting Webster to be forced into a draw in a Burn vs Ochoa match.

Luis vs some guy I’ve never met before.  He tried talking to me pre-tourney, but I was crazily rebuilding my deck (say, 14 maindeck changes, plus SB tweaking… I haven’t played T1 in 6 weeks.  That includes MagicWorkStation… His proxies were pimp enough, and recognized my Vroman Trophies… I don’t know if he even knows I’m LotusHead/SlapJack…

Um, Flash vs Ankh of Mishra… GG

It would appear that Austin is winning, but Gush got restricted like, what? Last year?

Some action sequence here.  When I get regular internet access (not just sneaking stuff onto Photobucket/TMD after I clock out at work) I might find something more interesting to say about this one.

OK.  Web has his Storm Counters out with some choice mana available…  Austin would have done shit if he could have with his mana base…

Dr. Tongue 2-0’d his first round opponent and got paired down vs Webster, arguably the best player in our Meta. (Luis is just as skilled, but WAY LUCKY McLUCKSACK!).

Early Fastbond is no match for Team Vacaville’s domination of Cory Redmond this day.
Team Vacavile 3: Cory Redmond 0.

Klemic vs The New Guy with nice proxies who reads either TMD or SCG Pimp Thread…

This dude was at Seat #1 vs Luis with Ichorid vs a Blue Deck, but Luis 2-0’d him…

This dude dredged into nothing, apparently…

Flashguy vs Huang.  I guess that’s Meddling Mage on the field, and Strip in the yard…

Dr. Tongue, taking his lashing like a man.  Vs Webster…

Cory with stuff out.  I guess this was round 4.

Klemic vs Control Slaver. Crypt on Crypt action…

Um… Pithing Needle on Welder?

Junior’s Fist full of cards vs Cory’s Board position…. That looks like a split Sol Ring/Dark Heart of the Woods on the left of Junior’s hand.  Is that R&D? Gods, I am so out of touch with the meta now…

Ochoa vs someone. I don’t know. I think I recall an extirpate on Force of Will, but it might be a different game…

Apparently, I took this pic.  No clue here…

Game two after 35 minutes of game 1. Burn on Ochoa action… Ochoa died to Lightning Bolt in response to Merchant Scroll, then FireBlast after merchant scroll failed to produce and answer to FireBlast… doh!

Sorry for lateness of pics, but I had to burn them onto a cd and smuggle it into work and do this on a slow ass computer...

Nice job with posting the pictures under Duress, Jeff.

2 of the last 3 pictures that you don't know are mine and Ochoa's match with Painter/Grindstone combo about to be thwarted with a Chain of Vapor fest that Webster bounced his Necro and my Painter in response to my activation of said Grindstone. His Extirpate nabbed all of my REB's I believe that game although I could be wrong.

My Mini-Report:
I get to tourney through scams/shenanigans by my teammates (as I was their only ride). I have no money, but I have time.  We’re there, I’m in (entry wise somehow), but I have no gas to get home… And I have like 15 maindeck changes to my deck to be made.  And Austin/Junior left Crushing Chamber at home (with the Tangle Wires).  And my Urborg was in someone’s extended deck, and I had 24 mana sources for Stax… I fit in Waste #4 and Ghost Quarters #1 to bring my strip component/mana base up to 6/26…

Round 1: Cory Redmond playing ???

I don’t know if I won die roll, but Shop and random lock piece bought me a second turn.  I had Mana Crypt on the field as Cory’s Win Condition.   Eventually Smokestack resolved, and other stuff.. Cory scoops.
Game 2: I get hella lucky. No Mana Crypt, but I do have locks.  Chalice for 1 and 2 etc.. or a timely Wasteland… Whoot!

Round 2:
JeffTheFob?
I suck down MindSensor Beats until I die… I made mistakes. Like walking into Stifle under Trinisphere protection, like mainphase, pre-landdrop/attack phase. I Tinkered for Mox Jet as it was the best option under MindSencor…

Game 2: Um… lots off good/bad plays by both of us, but I had 1st turn Welder (soon Needled) followed by like 12 rounds of beats.  A topdeck of Trike sealed the deal when the MindSensor wars started… Lucky me.. (he played Scrublands, he deserved to lose…)
His hand sucked. I won…

Game 3: I don't remember, but it probably involved my fatties being fatter than his "fatties".

Round 3: Austin w/ Bomberman 5000.
We both get game loses due to deck registration errors.  In my mad dash to assemble a list I forgot to mention Black Lotus in my list. Austin lost his list, hence a deck check.  Scott decided to give us extra time and sort it out ourselves.  I toasted Austion 2-0 in like 5 minutes because Austin is a scoop monkey…

Round 4: Vs Luis. ID.  Austin wanted me to play it out against Luis, but 2 9 pointers and 5 6 pointers pretty much said Austin would have to win no matter what.

Top 4: Klemic!  After destroying him 2-0 in fun matches, we got paired together.
He destroys me game one with Dreadnaught/Stifle with me at 9 life.

Game 2 he gets 2 wastes on my mana base that keeps me off Platz for the stall/win…

Sad

fun times!

My last name doesnt begin with a G, david.

But yeah apparentley i dont know how to dredge. flipped 15 cards and saw nothing, still managed to get louis to 1 before he comboed off.

g2 he keeps a no lander with something ridiculous, like leyline, ritual, ritual, brainstorm, yawgwill, ponder and recall. him on the draw, he gets a land, storms into a lotus, and goes off.
