Tools and Tubbies (TnT) has always sounded like a fun deck to play, abusing the crap out of Goblin Welders and Survival of the Fittest. I have not played Vintage long enough to have played it in it's heyday, but do any of you know the strengths and weaknesses of this deck? I have put together a list that looks good to me, but what do you think?

TnT 2008 (revised)

x1  Black Lotus
x1  Mana Crypt
x1  Mox Emerald
x1  Mox Ruby
x3  Null Rod
x4  Thorn of Amethyst
x1  Trinisphere

x2  Elvish Spirit Guide
x4  Faerie Macabre
x4  Goblin Welder
x3  Magus of the Moon
x1  Platinum Angel
x4  Simian Spirit Guide
x1  Squee, Goblin Nabob
x1  Sundering Titan
x4  Tarmogoyf
x1  Triskelion
x1  Vexing Shusher

x4  Survival of the Fittest

x3  Forest
x2  Mountain
x1  Strip Mine
x4  Taiga
x4  Wastelend
x4  Wooded Foothills

Sideboard

x1  Magus of the Moon
x3  Rack and Ruin
x2  Red Elemental Blast
x4  Reverant Silence
x1  Pyroblast
x4  Pyrostatic Pillar

The goal would be to get up disruption first, then put on pressure with a Tarmogoyf or Titan.

Notes on some of the card choices:

Faerie Macabre
Access to an uncounterable graveyard removal creature with Survival of the Fittest will make life Hell for any deck depending on the graveyard... which is virtually every deck in existance these days. And it's FREE!

Tarmogoyf
Cheaper than Juggernaut or Su Chi for putting on pressure. Also, it does not require the commitment in artifacts that a deck with Mishra's Workshops would.

Thorn of Amethyst
With mostly creatures in this deck, Thorn seems like the ideal choice for keeping combo in check. With Trinisphere maindeck and Pyrostatic Pillars in the sideboard, combo should have a tough fight.

Platinum Angel
Protection against Dredge.

Null Rod
Shutting down Moxen seals the deal in mana denial. Also, it's never fun to be enslaved...

So, viable?

Its definatly interesting.  I'm not sure you need 4 Macabre's maindeck...

I would definately try to work 4 Simians and possibly some ESGs into the deck (possibly in place of some {2} lands).  Also you DEFINATLY need 1 maindeck Vexing Shusher.  You should probably have 1 maindeck shop card as well.  I prefer Viashino Heratic.

As to what to take out or move.  You could probably move some number (if not all) the tarmogoyfs to the board.  Cut back on REB and RnR effects in favor of a maindeck Shusher and Heratic along with 1-2 more of each in the board.

Perhaps four Faerie Macabres are too many, but the goal is to have one available even before Survival of the Fittest is up. Getting a FM through SotF may take too long against Long and Dredge. Plus, multiples will usually be a boon and can be converted to something more relevant with SotF.

I really, reallly like SSG and ESG in place of Ancient Tombs and City of Traitors, respectively. They offer the same explosiveness and provide colored mana! Plus they can be converted to something better with SotF and can even beat when necessary.

Cutting one Magus of the Moon for a Vexing Shusher is also a good idea, but I'll probably keep the extra Magus in the sideboard.

As far as the Tarmogoyfs, they force the opponent to respond quickly or die. This deck has a solid soft lock but needs to end the game once ahead or else the opponent may comeback and combo out. I'd like to test some before cutting the Goyfs.

Finally, with Null Rods and Goblin Welders as well graveyard removal, I am not sure this deck will have a need for to fit an anti-shop creature. I'll play with it though...

Thanks for the input! Any other thoughts?

I have a deck similar to this for legacy. What about playing a genisis? He lets you continually bring back Macabre if need be?

I am not sold on SSG and ESG: Survival is mana intensive, so I prefer permanents to generate mana rather than one-shots.

Where is your copy of Anger?

Triskelion doesn't fit if you run Null Rod. Try Duplicant maybe.

About Faerie Macabre: I've been playing 4 main deck in my latest build of Vengeur Masqué (also a SotF-based deck) and they were great. I even cast them (thanks to Birds of Paradise) to beat vs Bomberman.

Good luck with your build.
