Gravemage Study{B} {B}{G}  {B}{G}
Enchantment
If you paid more black mana for Gravemage study than green mana, you cannot gain life.
Whenever a card is put into a graveyard, choose one:
Gain 1 life, or Lose 2 life and draw a card.

I think this is fairly balanced, and this mechanic plays heavily in the set I'm working on...

The concept here is forcing the power of hybrid cards down if they are played in monocolor decks, but UP if they are played as TRUE multicolor cards.
Here, you pay even BBG, and there's a huge drawback - but this could still see play in a monoblack deck.

My goal was to make at least a handful of "life for cards"  effects; I think that card draw is  {U} {B} {G} and I think this card fits the color pie rather well.

thoughts?

I think it ought to be "put into a graveyard from play." And possibly also only work on your own graveyard.

I'm not sure the templating of the card is that good.  You really have two modes of the card:
The 'black' side: you may pay 2 life to draw a card.
The 'green' side: you may pay 2 life to draw a card, if you don't then gain 1 life.

I think the card probably needs some sort of counter to make it easy to track:

[This] comes into play with a forsaken counter if you did not pay more green mana than black mana.
If there is a forsaken counter on [this] you cannot gain life.
Whenever a card is put into your graveyard choose one - pay 2 life an draw a card; or gain 1 life.

Unless the intent of the card was to be "you may not -choose- to gain a life"  Then I would suggest this...

[This] comes into play with a bloom counter if you paid more green mana than black mana.
If a card would be put into your graveyard and there is a bloom counter on [this] you may remove it from the game and gain 1 life instead.
Whenever a card is put into you graveyard pay 2 life and draw a card.

You're right, this is quite silly with Dredge otherwise.

I think having a cost of  {2} {B} would help broaden the card. Probably really strong though, even with it being templated as only working for your cards and your graveyard.
