VV or Void Vault plays very much like the Control Slaver and Tezzerator decks. Basically the main combo for VV is the i) Leyline of the void with Helm of obedience and ii) Time Vault + Voltaic key with Tezzerat serving as both roles of tutor or combo.
Let us look at the card choices. 4 Leyline of the Void is definitely necessary in this deck. Having one in your starting seven is always a strong play against deck like Ichorid. It can single handedly wins you this fearful match as Ichorid decks will not have anti LOTV cards maindeck normally. I chose to run only 2 copies of Helm of Obedience. You always never want to have more than a copy in hand and do not require it in your starting seven unless you can generate 5 mana. Most of the time, you will mainly tutor for it.
Here comes the second part of the combo, Time Vault and Voltaic key. Time Vault and Helm within the same deck really has its synergy. Voltaic key is one of my favorite card as it combos along with Mana Crypt, Time Vault, Sol ring. The main reason I run 2 Keys is to increase the chance of drawing one in the game and tutor up Time Vault to go infinite.
I am still unsure of the number of lands to be played. However I think 14 lands give me a very consistant mana base to cast out the Leylines and Helm. The addition of dark ritual really gives this deck a first or second turn kills. 5 Moxes, Black Lotus, Mana Vault, Sol ring and Mana Crypt doesn’t require any more introductions. Lotus Petal is being inferior here.
The protection for this deck mainly consists of duress effects; with 4 Duress and 3 Thoughtseize. This works wonders against most of the deck in the format as compared to Mana drains and Force of wills ran by CS and Tezzerat. Duress provides you information of your opponent’s line of play which really gives you an edge in your match. The lone Echoing truth serves as bounce for those pesky Gaddock Teeg/DSC if any or anything relevant. Chain of vapor doesn’t belong to this deck as you wouldn’t want your Leyline being bounced back to your hand. However, not running Force of Will does have its downside of unable to stop opponents Ancestrals Recall etc.
The good stuffs are being pretty standard; Necropotence, the broken Yawgmoth’s Will, Ponder, Brainstorm, Recall etc. The Tinker here serves as a piece of your combo as well in searching out missing pieces either in the form of Helm or Voltaic Key/Time vault. The two Thirst of Knowledge here work wonders in replenishing your hand.
Full set of black tutors, Vampiric, Demonic, Imperial Seal and Demonic Consultation (Yes I’m not crazy 1 mana Instant Tutor. Basically the argument for Consultation is you will win more games than loses this way.) I have included a lone Tezzerat for its multi abilities in the form of tutor, untapper for your Time Vault and a win condition. Sideboarding is definitely dependant on your metagame as here I will just provide you with some ideas. The man plan consisting of DSC and 3 Trashing Wumpus gives you edge against Fish. The others do not require further explanation.
Try out this deck and I think it is really strong and fun to play. I had a couple of turn one kills in the back of tinker, rituals and tutors. I can’t provide you with match up details as I myself had not done much testing. I do not play MTG in real life just a couple of MWS.
Thank you.
