http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/article/16367.html

This is a rather long article that examines, card by card, the impact of the DCI’s recent wave of unrestrictions.   This article is full of decklists.

Editorial blurb:

Quote
Monday, September 8th - Last week, Wizards of the Coast did something unusual… they made a few Vintage announcements that pleased the community! In the spirit of thanks, Stephen Menendian takes us through the unrestrictions in a positive light, suggests some decklists, and talks about the restoration of Time Vault…

Interesting article. I reactivated my premium membership to read this. A good read. Like all the lists, it's a good starting point for experimentation.

Thanks!

This article marks a shift in my focus.  For the first third of the year, I focused on writing articles that I liked to write.  The middle third was mostly event focused.  However, I realized that my readership was not expanding, and may have been declining.  This marks the first article where I will be focusing more on innovative decklists, pushing technology, and trying to do more what readers want to see.

Feedback is important to that.

Wait 'til you see next week...

I liked this article more than I have liked the majority of your articles lately (not that I didn't enjoy the others).  I think you were fairly spot on in most of your analyses, although I think you didn't give Mox Diamond enough credit.  In general, I just liked the overall positive feel of the article.  It made it fun to read.

Thank you!    This was sort of an Ode to Vintage.  I was hoping that more people would catch onto the feel-good vibe in the article.   SCG readers are cynics Smile

The intro was the best part of this article, and probably your best intro I can remember reading.

The rest of it didn't really tell us anything we didn't know. The Loam deck is nice though, and would be somewhere along the starting point for a deck I'd use with Mox Diamond. The problem is that Fastbond and Exploration are just better than Mox Diamond in that deck, as they can actually help break the game open. Mox Diamond can't.

Those aren't mutually exclusive options, are they?

Technically, no they are not mutually exclusive. As a practical reality, yes they are mutually exclusive. They basically compete with each other for slots in the deck, as well as lines of play. It's better to just play be recurring Strip Mine with Fastbond or Exploration than it is to be pitching a random land to Mox Diamond. I've played a ton with Mox Diamond in Legacy (always with Life From the Loam or Crucible), and Life From the Loam in both Vintage and Legacy, and I am just giving you this hint so you don't waste your time in Vintage. In Legacy, where fast mana isn't really abundant, and there's no Strip Mine, Mox Diamond really rewards those who play Life From the Loam. In Vintage, Strip Mining your opponent's entire side of the board will nearly always be more beneficial than casting Mox Diamond.

Sure, I agree.

I think the point I was making though is that I don't expect most of those cards to see play in Vintage, and I outlined the areas in which I thought the ones that would see play would be utilized.

Mostly, I wanted to praise the DCI for the unrestrictions and express my joy at having Time Vault restored, a campaign I've been waging for three years.    Honestly, I never thought it would happen.   When I raised the issue again this year, people thought I was crazy for "beating a dead horse."

I skimmed the article, but the introduction was excellent. Not to say that the rest of the article wasn't, because I am sure it was good, but that introduction was extremely well written and catchy.

I enjoyed the introduction immensily, and the bulk of the article. Again, thanks for bumping threads of now free articles.

If I was hardcore and/or played the best decks, I'd consider premium, but I'm not and I don't.  I'm just a member of the community sucking on the free teet of TMD and related sites for overal meta-knowledge and doing my part.

I just hope that my shop concoctions work against the local bad guys (best players).

I do love the history of Vintage stuff.  I echoed such tales in order to get a local Vintage scene happening many years ago (talking about Meandeck, PTW Fish/HateDecks and CS/TPS/Dragon/7-10/Draw-7 etc.)
