Round 1 AJ Grasso[0-2 Drop](TD) - Ur Standstill

G1 - I lose the die roll, mulligan once but open up on a hand with Ancestral, I know he's playing REB blasts so when he opens up on Volcanic I decide to wait for an opening to resolve Recall.  He goes for turn 2 Time Walk I cast Recall in response which resolves he takes his TW turn but just has a lot of disruption but no Standstill or Null Rods.  I fire off a couple Duress' he drains the first the 2nd resolves seeing MisD, REB and some blanks but he's been beating me down with Factory and Gorilla Shaman until I drop my own Shaman and trade creatures blocking.  His Shaman had already killed my Voltiac Key and after it died I dropped my Time Vault.  A couple more turns pass when I have Force, TFK, FoF, Will.  I go for the EOT FoF which he REBS then push through Will which gets back my other combo piece and I win.  Apparently he was holding onto Null Rod but didn't play it for some reason.  My Will still would have resolved but at least I wouldn't have auto-won if he cast Null Rod my Will would have been Recall+BS and replay a land.

SB: -1 Mystical -1 Hurks -1 Mox Monkey -1 Mystical -1 Ponder -1 Pearl -2 Drain
+4 Goyf +1 Tropcal Island +1 Ancient Grudge +2 REB/Pyro

G2 - Get blown out on mull to 5 and him having 2 Standstills.

G3 - I mull again but have a solid hand with Duress, U. Sea, Fetch, DT, Force, BS and Goyf I can't remember.  I Duress him seeing Stifle, REB, Misd, Strip Mine, Volc, Fetch, X.  My only other mana source is a Fetch so I fear turn 1 Volc turn 2 Strip because if he doesn't do anything I can't fetch and playing the waiting game in this matchup is a recipe for failure which is part of the reason I board out some Drains, awkwardly I draw Island for the turn which makes my Duress choice pretty sub par.  Since he has REB and MisD tutoring for Recall is a no go so instead I get a Duress to get some more information and hopefully push through the Goyf.  My 2nd Duress seeing Standstill and Threads for new cards I take the Standstill since it will blow me out.

I draw a Pyroblast of my own and then run down the Goyf which resolves.  Goyf starts taking 4 life total chunks out of him but he now has Crucible + Strip going and I know he still has Threads in the grip, thankfully I keep ripping lands like a champ makes his Cruc/Strip less of a blowout than it should be.  I cast the Pyro countering a Recall and when he was at 8 he resolves the Threads.  I have enough mana to play Will and go for Pyroblast on his Threads but I know he still has the MisD which sucks but it’s my only play so I go for it.  AJ isn't awful so he asks if its REB or Pryo I tell him Pyro he MisDs it at Crucible.  I lose getting beat down by Factory and Goyf.

0-1

Round 2 paired up against Josh(oshkoshhaitsyosh) - TPS

G1 - I lose the roll, mull and he opens on Duress T1 into T2 Timetwister, I knew from talking to him b4 the match that he was playing TPS which was good to know since mulligan decisions against that are far different than Drain mirror which is what I would have expected.

My Twister has one Force, his is pretty nutty he casts a bunch of Moxen increasing storm but with his only black source casts Ritual he already has a ton of blue and colorless floating with only four cards in hand.  Countering it wouldn’t stop Desire, or Jar but it would stop Will, and Bargain but Force stops but those of as well unless he has a combination of them.  I definitely should have countered thinking back at it, he leads with Jar which I Force but that was just a bait spell for Bargain which is GG.  TPS can fizzle Jar quite a bit especially with only blue/colorless floating and having played a land which makes my not countering Ritual even worse.

SB: -1 Mystical, -1 Ponder
+2 REB/Pyro

G2 - I have Force, Drain, Crypt, Jet, Vault, Key, Land I open on T1 infinite turns and has Force but not a 2nd apparently his hand was pretty dumb with Recall, Lotus, Bargain, Time Walk and other ridiculousness.  Thankfully for he just scooped it up and didn't give my Crypt a chance to kill myself.

G3 - He has turn 1 Duress taking Force and we go draw go for awhile trading Duress and me Draining some of his threats until he was eventually able to push through a Timetwister without playing a land for turn 1, I'm pretty worried after my new hand does not have Force and he leads with U. Sea into Ritual, he already has lethal storm when he casts Sensei's Divining top and then Vampiric tutor.  I tell him Vamp resolves and then he goes into the tank wondering if I've been slow rolling a Force of Will because he has Tendrils in hand he could go for Vamp->Lotus tap to draw and kill me but if I have the Force he gets blown out.  After thinking about it for awhile he goes for Duress and sees that I have Tinker and Tezzeret in hand with Vault already in play and there’s nothing he can do to stop me.

I feel like the fact that I didn't counter his last ritual in G3 that it should have set off an alarm that I didn't have the Force.  If I do have Force I'm going to do whatever I can to untap with a fresh grip and since he already played a land for the turn there's not much in his deck that will allow him to continue comboing out.  Also if I do have the Force he's likely to lose regardless of what he gets with Vamp so may as well hope I don't have it.  TPS is a difficult deck to play and the better read you can get on your opponent the more accurate lines of plays you'll be able to take.

1-1

Round 3 Bernie[0-2 Drop] - Tezz w/ Welder

G1 - I lose the die roll and he mulligans and then opens up on Welder.  I Duress him seeing another Welder, TFK, Land, Mana Vault.  My hand was pretty gassy so I wasn't that worried but he draws into Voltaic Key which has me a bit worried since now all of his tutors are must counter.  He's beating down with the Welders and goes for a Vamp which I have to counter but in this time I'm resolving a bunch of card drawing and getting really far ahead eventually I drop a Gorilla Shaman and my only fear (Vault) is no longer a threat.  I win after Yawg Will -> Gifts.  Bernie was pretty flooded this game after having his one business spell hit by Duress so the game wasn't particularly close.

SB: -1 Hurks -1 Mystical
+2 REB/Pyro

G2 - We have a very back and forth game where early on he gets ahead resolving two TFKs discarding artifacts both time.  A couple turns later a Duress sneaks through I see that his hand has less business than I thought it would and I'm able to resolve to Scroll->Recall to get ahead.

Later in the game we get into an interesting game state where I know he has a Sundering Titan in hand but because I have Mox Monkey I'm not that worried.  The turn after I duress I hardcast Inkwell, my hand is pretty depleted at this point but I have top going and a Misdirection in hand.  He resolves TfK ditching Sundering Titan and then with 3 cards in hand goes for Recall, I spin the top and hit a blue spell to MisD it to myself while leaving myself open for him to drop a mox and get Titan on board.  He plays Lotus and Welds it into Sundering Titan.  The problem is he has to many lands so he can't LD himself to get of off Islandwalk so instead destroys four of my lands.  Inkwell beats him down while I still have Mox Moneky to chump block if needed but I top into a Time Walk so I'm not forced to block.

2-1

Round 4 GWSx - guy from NYC don't remember name sorry.

I win the die roll(only time but good matchup to win it) but I'm forced to mulligan a very slow hand that would be eaten alive by GWSx.  My new hand has Mystical, Force, Blue card and couple of lands.  All I really remember about this game was I Mysticalled for Recall in response to Duress, countered a Bob and was able to stop a couple more threats and win the game. Can't remember if it was Vault/Key or Inkwell not that it matters much.

-1 Hurks
+1 EE - I know he has Xantid Swarm

G2 - He leads with Bayou->Xantid which I have to Force.  Then he has turn 2 Bob which I use another Force on (could be incorrect but since I didn't have much else in the grip but I felt like trying to survive to the late game wouldn't succeeded if he had Bob in play).  My hand is jank at this point and he's able to set up a Desire for 6 which he blunders a bit.  The 6 cards are Mystical, Ponder, EtW, Timetwister, Duress, X he has an LED in play and no cards in hand.  So he can crack LED for Blue then Mystical->Time Walk->Ponder, and have lethal with tokens without casting Timetwister.  Instead he plays Ponder then Mystical and finally casts Twister + EtW shipping the turn. This gives me an extra turn with 7 cards but it doesn't matter as I don't draw anything relevant.

G3 - I have turn 1 Tinker into Inkwell and Force/Blue/Drain in my hand but I only have 1 land.  So if I'm able to rip a 2nd blue source I should be pretty safe.  Fortunately for me he had a slower controlling hand in this game rather than one with a lot of bombs.  I Force his attempt at Rebuild and that's match.

3-1

ID with Matt Elias(Prospero)

3-1-1

T8 Matt Elias - Oath

G1 - He wins the die roll and keeps his seven and I believe I mulligan but my hand is pretty spicy (Force, Drain, Recall, TFK, lands).  He leads with Land + Chalice @ 0 and passes the turn.  I draw a TFK I believe and pass the turn casting Recall during his upkeep which resolves.  He goes for Oath but I have the Force pitching FoF, after this the game is essentially over since I'm really ahead on cards and all he is drawing are creatures and Moxen.  I eventually win with and EOT Gifts for Time Vault, Key, Vamp, Mystical.

SB: -1 Mystical
+1 EE

G2 - He mulligans to five, on turn 2 he has Duress which I cast Vamp in response for Recall, he sees a hand with Vault, Force, TFK and some other good late game cards but no active disruption.  Thinking back Vamping for Recall was a pretty bad auto-pilot play he only had two cards in hand so I should have Vamped for Force, Drain or Duress and just tried to take it to the late game since I was already ahead on cards.  After Duress he drops Pithing Needle on Time Vault.  I cast Recall into Duress (better lucky than good) and he has Oath in hand.  After that I was too far ahead.

T4 Jake Gans - 5c Stax

Jake is pretty young and still learning the format but I expect him to do well in the future if he sticks with Vintage.

G1 - He plays Goblin Welder and Thorn early on while I'm setting up my manabase with Sol Ring.  I end step TfK into Tinker while his board is just mana sources, Welder, and Crucible.  My Tinker gets Inkwell who is able to beat down once before he rips Karn, 0/8's block my 7/10 all day long and soon after he gets Smokestack going and we’re off to game 2.

- I also board in EE against 9sphere Shop but he only had Thorn
SB -4 Duress/Seize -1 Mana Vault -1 Mox Pearl -1 Tezzeret -1 FoF -1 Gifts -1 TfK
+1 Tropical +1 Island +4 Goyf +2 Grudge +2 Tormod's Crypt

G2 - I don't really remember the details of this match all that much other than getting beatdown by 2x Welders, Forcing a Gorilla Shaman.  My EOT TfK discarded a Grudge and some other spell but it dug me into the green mana I needed to play Goyf and flashback Grudge.  Soon after Goyf came down I hit a Tinker but I was low on permanents making my opponents Tangle Wires very strong, eventually I was able to start beating down with Inkwell then Goyf winning the game.  I believe my opponent was a bit manascrewed this game.

G3 - Im on the draw and keep a ballsy hand of Lotus, Mana Vault, Force, TfK, Tinker, Time Walk, Goyf.  If he has two Resistors, Resistor + Chalice or Chalice + Stax I'm in big trouble but I decide to gamble and see how it plays out.  He has Workshop-> Mana Vault + Resistor, at this point I figure it could easily be GG since after the Resistor he'll have enough mana for another, regardless I Force it and he passes the turn.  I topdeck U. Sea for the turn which is nice and go for Tinker + Time Walk and he doesn't draw anything relevant and dies in a couple turns.

After the match I was talking to a friend of mine who brought up the line of play of cracking Lotus for green and playing Goyf + Inkwell.  If Goyf power doesn't change he is a 2/3 so its a turn slower clock but it does give me an extra permanent on the board which could be clutch.  Also having Time Walk stranded in my hand is much better than Goyf since I can topdeck any mana source to cast Time Walk but the same isn't true of Goyf.  I actually don't know what the correct play was but I was upset at myself for not even seeing the line of play.  I had Tinker+Time Walk imprinted on my mind but I should have reevaluated my hand after drawing U. Sea.

I found out after the match that he boarded out Smokestack which is good for me since that’s one of Shops best cards against Tezzeret, I think he feared my Goyfs too much and because of that brought in his own.

Finals

Josh Barkon wanted to remove a stigma of making T8's but never winning events and asked if I would concede, I didn't care one way or the other.  We worked out a split that we were both happy with and then I went to a tasty Thai restaurant and got some curry.

It was nice to get a win after having a really sub par extended season.  Props go out to Simon for hosting another great event and to all the people that came out to play.  I look forward to seeing everyone at Nick's event in two weeks.  Also I wasn't taking any notes so if any of my opponents notice any discrepancies feel free to post on the boards.

I like the look of that list, but have been struggling to get my mana to the point where I can cast the Duress/Thoughseize slot WITH the red and green cards.

Wouldn't the goyf have been a 3/4 since you FOW'ed the resistor? Of course, playing Goyf + leviathan is a slightly better play in this case because if you draw a blue source you win a turn sooner.

This "strangely" has come up quite a bit in my testing. I don't know the answer to the mana base problems, but I would like to hear some thoughts about the issue.

Your 100% correct, I didn't think of the play during the game and when recalling game state I forgot about the Force.  Based on that fact playing Goyf + Tinker is certainly the better play, thanks.

This has come up somewhat but only in pre-board matchups.  Post-board in the matchups where I am boarding in Goyf I am generally boarding out Duress effects except against Fish where I just leave in the Thoughtseize.  This list is only running 5 fetchlands which might be one less than the average list but I'd have to look that up.  The one MD Tropical is usually Library of Alexandria in most lists so that doesn't really matter.  Owen were you referring to pre-board or post-board mainly?  Also having other 1cc stuff to do other than Duress like Mox Monkey, Top, Ponder also help to setup game when you have Duress but not black mana.

Mostly sideboarded, it makes sense against shops to sideboard out your Duress effects in favor of Tarmogoyf and Ancient Grudge. But in the mirror you damn well want Duress, Pyroblast, and Ancient Grudge (and probably Tarmogoyf) so then you need UUBRG all somewhat early.

I haven't tested that many different boarding configurations for the mirror, I've only been bringing in the 2 REBs for Mystical/Ponder.  I feel like most cards in the mirror are pretty relevant so if you want to board in more cards (esp. Goyf) that you need to start hitting cards that are better than what your bringing in.  Boarding in 1-2 Grudge could be correct though I just feel like its a card that's not going to help you when you start getting behind.

This makes the mana requirements a bit harsher than pre-board but its manageable.  Another route is your 5c manabase but I'm too afraid of Wasteland to run a manabase like that.  The metagame in NJ/PA has a decent number of shops so I try to dedicate a lot of slots for that matchup.
