Lord Humungus, Ruler of the Wasteland

I have been out of the loop for a little while now, but recently have been testing a deck that has performed fairly well.  That is to say, so far it has won more than it has lost.  The idea was to use a Stax prison base but have creatures in case you dont draw into the main lock piece, Smokestack.  I first thought about going monored(naturally) but decided to broaden my horizons a bit.  I broke a longstanding vow never to play on MWS again(due to idiots, a-holes, unfun players, etc.) and have been testing this list outs with decent results.  Here goes:

Creatures: 12
4 Master of Etherium
4 Ethersworn Canonist
3 Juggernaut
1 Platinum Angel

Metal: 17
4 Smokestack
4 Thorn of Amethyst
4 Chalice of the Void
2 Null Rod
2 Crucible of Worlds
1 Trinisphere

Colored Spells: 5
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Tinker
1 Time Walk

Mana+lands: 26
5 Moxen
1 Black Lotus
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
4 Workshop
4 Wasteland
3 City of Brass
3 Gemstone Mine
2 Glimmervoid
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy

The reason I don't use Welder is there are no Bazaars or Thirsts and most of the artifacts(cept for Angel) are cast relatively easy.  If I could find room, trust me I would.

This deck has enough lock pieces to function as a Stax deck when you take into account Canonist.  He has ranged everywhere from a meager 2/2 to the reason I won the game.  So far he has been great more often than not.

Master of Etherium:  Damn, this guy can do some damage.  Many people have let him resolve as a 3/3(the average CITP) only to be attacked for 5 next turn and more the turn after.  The fact that he turns Juggernauts into 6/4's is no joke.  3/3 Canonists aren't so meager anymore.  2 Masters in play? That damage is no joke.  In short, this card is good.

I used the best restricted colored spells as my draw package, because thats all i got.  Tinkering/tutoring for the lone Angel has saved me plenty. I really think Angel complements the deck nicely, it buys you enough time to either lock or beat for the win.  You can also get the Strip lock with the tutors.

I have been liking the  2/2 Crucible+Rod combo.  Neither card function well in multiples, and some games I haven't needed the other.  I suspect some Rods can go in the SB.  Now that I mention it, this deck does just fine with Rod.  It doesn't impede attacking creatures or Smokestack.

I'm pretty sure I want Thorn maindeck instead of Sphere, but I have seen plenty of Fishy decks where Thorn hurt me.  Maybe Spheres SB?

The rainbow land base is pretty good.  I haven't lost a Glimmervoid yet with this amount of artifacts.  Glim is another underused card imo, I wouldn't want anymore but 2 has been working out well.  I think this is about the maximum number of colored spells I want in the deck, taking into account Canonist and Master of course.

Thanks for looking and any advice/questions/comments/concerns.

Mike

P.S. For the most part I have been content with MWS and would like to thank the nice, intelligent, and worthy opponents out there whom I played against.  Too many times I heard "you got lucky" or some other b.s. comment after winning.....Isn't a random card game about some luck after all?  Its annoying when people try to diminsh your win.  Vintage is a gentlemens game after all and I try to be as gracious in defeat as I am in victory.  Again, thanks for the fun games.

Anyone else tried this out?  Or a silimar list?  I'm still playing it on MWS and doing well.

I like to see a SB with this. I can see what the deck does but consiser the fact that you'll be playing 50-66% of all matches with your sideboard. Also, isn't 3 colors too much? In a deck running shops it might get tough for your lands to help you carry out all your strategies.

Well technically 3 colors couldn't be too much, because the deck uses rainbow lands.  On the other hand, the TOTAL number of cards that need on-color mana are 13.  It doesnt really matter if those 13 cards contained all 5 colors.  Blue obviously has a slight edge due to Tolarian Academy.  That's why I want to keep the colored spells to a minimum so color screw isn't a major issue.

SB would be something like:

2 Null Rod
3 Sphere of Resistance
3 Pithing Needle/Crypt
3 Triskelion(when u have to take out Rods)

And maybe a 4-of creature card vs. artifact mirrors when Canonist is a Grizzly Bear.

Those 4 cards could be the goblin welders you don't have room for in the main.  They're definitely the best thing you can play in an artifact mirror.

I'm the only other legal target, so I draw 6 cards, and he literally quits Magic.

Terrorists searching in vain for these powerful weapons have the saying "Bill Copes spitteth, and he taketh away."

I'm not familiar with decks like this but you have 3 kinds of lands: rainbow, shops and stripeffects.
I can imagine that sometimes you have the wrong lands in your hand.
But you're definitely right about the fact it shouldn't matter how many colors as long as you have enough
rainbowlands to support them.

So I also agree with the Welderplan.
