instead of the axe, why not play razormane masticore? he's weldable and does what you want to creatures, as well as working under rod and enabling  hellbent.

With Razormane Masticore you have to keep your last card draw if you want to pay your next upkeep. Not very synergic with Hellbent Smile

My thread in the Improvement Forum got locked so maybe I can get some suggestions here. Here's my post from there...
6x Mountain
4x Mishra's Workshop
4x Wasteland
2x Ancient Tomb
1x Tolarian Academy
1x Strip Mine
8x Lotus, Mox, Crypt, Sol Ring

4x Thorn of Amethyst
4x Chalice of the Void
2x Sword of Fire and Ice
1x Memory Jar
1x Trinisphere

4x Goblin Welder
4x Juggernaut
4x Magus of the Moon
3x Triskelion
3x Solemn Simulacrum
2x Gorilla Shaman
2x Duplicant

Here's the list I used in my first vintage tournament in which I somehow T4ed. I'm just looking for some suggestions from people with more experience with this deck and Vintage in general. I also need a sideboard as I didn't have one in the last tournament. So far I have...
4x Leyline of the Void
4x Shattering Spree

Here's the thread from the tournament I was in so you can see what the meta is like...http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=37921.0
