RIP Mogg Fanatic...at least you are still better than Fire Bowman!!!

I was once asked on MWS, what the highest I ever finished at a TMD Open was.  I replied, "I've never played in a Waterbury.  I was then called "A TOTAL NOOB!"

Very Interesting to see 2 Fish decks and 2 Storm Combo decks in the T8. And more interesting to see only 1 traditional Tezzeret list. The 1 Shop deck making it in at 2nd place is also nice to see and I'm glad that Shop players still realize the power of MD or SB Chalice. It is too good a card in too many match ups not to include. I'd be curious to see how this top 8 played out. Match reports from anyone? I think my Noble-Fish deck from Waterbury as spawned a beast and the GW/x Fish variants are beginning to abound. I realize the winning deck is miles from my list, but I recently switched from Trygon Predators MD to Qasali Pridemage and haven't looked back. Exalted is actually a great ability in Vintage because you'll often be facing down 0 blockers and the extra points of damage stack. I've been tweaking a new GUW list, but I may have to take some hints from this list. Heartwood Storyteller? Bombtastic! Nicely done Nick! I mean, since I created the sickness of Noble Hierarch + Cold-Eyed Selkie, I'm probably still going to stick to that deck, but the time may finally have come to drop Stifle and add Aven Mindcensor instead. I'd say both are on about equal footing against Storm combo in hosing the strategy except that Mindcensor has much wider applications against the field. That may be the biggest change to my list shortly.

Question for Nick: Did you ever find Tarmogoyf + Knight of the Reliquary to be a bit of overkill on the beats? Would one or the other be sufficient? Just a thought.

Nick has been playing this deck for a LONG time now...and it he's managed to streamline it considerably. He played it at the TMD Open, but ran into quite a bit of aggro. The deck does very well vs. combo, and has a decent clock.

Heartwood Storyteller in a deck that runs basically no non-creature spells is absolutely amazing. I personally hate it's casting cost, but a Remora without upkeep that beats for two is hard to ignore Smile

He's a big fan of the Knight...originally they functioned as additional Goyfs...but their ability to fetch specific lands and get rather large very fast has been key.

Fixed.

And totally agreed. I was very happy to see Nick get first place here. It was well deserved.

Great tournament once again. Thanks Ray!

Mith, thanks for speaking up for Nick so quickly. I started reading that post and almost couldn't find the reply button quick enough. Then I saw you said what needed to be said quicker than I could have.  It does stink though, because it looks now like he just went with the flow considering there was a very similiar top 8 deck in Europe that just posted, as well as a similiar deck top 4'd at Hadley. But the people that know him though, know he's been tweaking his deck for more years than I can count on one hand maybe even two, but you'd probably know that exact number, Mith.

I can vouch for this.

When I was designing my GW Beatdown deck for my SCG article, I was also typing up the Waterbury decklists and I when I came across Nick's, I was like: Wow, What's this?!

His deck from mid-March Waterbury is available on my blog: http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=33669.270

I was very impressed with his list.  It gave me good ideas to explore, and inspired me to keep working on the archetype.   I admit that I had to read Heartwood Storyteller to find out what it did Razz

It does look like Nick streamlined his list, and I hope that my work had in turn helped rethink some of his choices.  Notice that Nick didn't run Aven Mindcensor before (really important!!), otherwise I'm sure he could have done even better.    And his mix of Canonist and Kataki in this list (he had no Kataki in his earlier list) are what I settled on as well.  Kataki is amazing!

Stephen, funny thing is he never goes online ever or reads magic articles. All his tweaks are strictly from Monday night Scholars, lol. That is pretty great though that, again, by chance he seams to be following what works with everyone else. Naturally, the meta there is all Vailt/Key and TPS, so his course is directed parallel to what's played majorily in the current National/New England meta. We only really lack a Shops opponent, but even when we had a couple it was nothing like we saw at TMC, that thing was a house.

Considering the deck runs Pridemage main along with Kataki, Oxidize, and Grip appearing in the sideboard, his matchup against Shops is pretty good.  This is speaking from experience as someone who was playing Ubastax.

I run a Seal of Cleansing and a Seal of Primoridum maindeck for their usefulness against Stax and Time Vault as well.  That's ontop of 4 Pridemage.
