ANNOUNCEMENT: MEANDECK OPEN – VINTAGE TOURNAMENT
Sunday, June 21, 2009 – Columbus, Ohio

ORIGINS is around the corner, and we know you'll be jonesing for some Midwest Vintage action!    Team Meandeck is proud to host another awesome Vintage tournament.   If you are a Vintage regular or looking to hone your Vintage skills, you have come to the right place!  It's a fun, friendly, but competitive atmosphere, and a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon on break from the family or the grind.

This will probably be the FINAL Meandeck Open of the Summer, on account of Gencon, the Steel City Power Nine, and the ICBM Open.   This is your last chance to sharpen your skills at a Meandeck Open before the Fall!

WHAT: VINTAGE! Tournament

Swiss + Top 8.

Entry is $20

The new Banned and Restricted list changes announced June 20 WILL BE IN EFFECT for this tournament.

We have raised our entry fee from $15 to $20 for several reasons.   The store owner will put a larger percentage of the entry into the prize pool, AND we want to extend our prize pool to the entire top 8.   We think these two great advantages are worth the downside of having to pay $5 more.

PRIZES:

CASH!!!
1st Place: 40% of Prize Pool
2nd Place: 20% of Prize Pool
3rd Place: 10% of Prize Pool
4th Place: 10% of Prize Pool
5th-8th: 5% of prize pool each

However, if there is just a cut to top 4, prize distribution as follows:
1st Place: 50%
2nd Place: 25%
3rd and 4th Place: 12.5%

Prize Pool will be 80% of entry fees!

Minimum $200 guaranteed!

Also door prizes will be awarded throughout the tournament! If you have suggestions or requests, PM me with that information and we’ll see what we can do!

PROXIES: A maximum of 15 proxies will be allowed.  The first five proxies are free.   However, it is $1 per proxy ABOVE five.

Please note that this is a change from our previous policy of unlimited proxies.   We ran this in our previous tournament, and it went very well.   All additional monies generated by additional proxies will go directly into the prize pool.

*** NOTE *** Collector's Edition and International Edition cards will be LEGAL for this tournament

If you intend on running CE or IE cards, you MUST:

1) use completely opaque sleeves, AND
2) Double Sleeve your card OR use a looser fitting sleeves where the cut of the corner of the card is not visible.  Otherwise, you must replace your sleeves before the top 8.

Because this is a pilot program, we HIGHLY encourage you to play with CE and IE cards.   Play dual lands, Time Vault, power, whatever it is you want to use!   This is one reason we are decreasing the number of proxies permitted.

WHEN: Sunday, June 21, 2009

The store opens at 11:30 AM. Registration starts at 12:30. Registration will close and the tournament begins at 1PM sharp.

WHERE:

The Soldiery
4256 N. High St.
Columbus, Ohio 43214

ALSO!

Yes, Alara Reborn WILL be legal for this tournament!

This tournament will  count towards the Mana Drain's Vintage Player Rankings (http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=37688.0 ) (so long as we get 17 or more players).   If you want to accumulate points towards that system for cool end-of-year prizes, come down and pick up some points!

These tournaments are for YOU. We want to make them as fun as we possibly can. That means that we want your feedback on how we can make them better.

Finally, some of you went to Thurmans afterward and enjoyed the amazingness that is Thurmans (those of who went should report!)

Put the address in your GPS so you can get there after the tournament!

Don't miss on eating this:

Do not miss this! Bring your friends, bring your cousins, bring your siblings! We proved the skeptics wrong! If you are a Midwesterner, don't miss this event!

Hope you can make it!

Some people have asked me, so let me reiterate once again:   The new banned and restricted list announced on June 20th WILL be in effect for this tournament, whatever the B&R list might look like.

Yes, I realize that isn't much time to prepare, but that makes things more fun :p

Also, GPS Thurman's Cafe so you know how to get there after the tournament.

Finally, if anyone needs to borrow any cards, please post your card needs here or PM me.  I will help you out however I can.

Will this tournament see the return of Mark Trogdon?  How many blue decks will be left in his trail of destruction to the finals?

Who knows?

Will everyone from Cleveland play Ichorid?

Will the United Mishra's Workshops ever be able to band together to destroy this upstart planeswalker Tezzeret?

Find out on Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!

So I tried out Bomberman at the Meandeck Open and it played really smoothly.  It's been a long time since I played Vintage in a tournament setting and I was definitely rusty but the deck was solid.  Trinket Mage was gold for me all day long.  The only matchup I was expecting to play and never did was a Workshop deck.  It was a shame because I was most prepared for that matchup.  The glaring mistake with the mainboard was running Echoing Truth instead of Hurkyl's Recall.  I lost two matches to Inkwell Leviathan because the Scroll I had every time Tinker resolved against me could only tutor up an Echoing Truth.  To everyone out there like me, don't underestimate Inkwell Leviathan.  You need an answer to it now that Thirst is gone and there's no reason to play Darksteel over Inkwell.  The deck needs Gorilla Shaman, too.  I wanted that card so many times the whole day.

Eating at Thurman's after the tournament was a blast.  I love hanging out with the Cleveland guys and talking Magic.  Where was Twaun???  There was definitely something missing without him there.  In any case, I'll probably make it out to the next Meandeck Open.  I wasn't planning on going to this one but just like every other time, I wake up a half hour late to even make it there on time, race around like mad, make my deck while driving and wing the directions since I had no time to look them up online.

Thanks to the store owner for holding the tournament and Meandeck for hosting it.
