Hello,
This is my very first post on this forum so I figured the "improvement" board was the place for me.  I apologize in advance if this is the wrong board.

I'm returning to the game after about 10-12 years, so I'm not exactly familiar with a lot that's out there.  I figured reading everything I could from Steve Menendian and signing up here to ask questions were the best steps I could take to refamiliarize myself.  Read over a bunch of the stuff here and it looks like a crazy resource.

Anyway, Vintage is the format that I enjoy most, and I'm looking for deck ideas for tournaments that allow 0 or 5 proxies.  I have zero old-school power, but I own most of the rest of the restricted list and don't mind buying things like missing duals, fetches, and the like.

For 10 proxy tournaments I have TPS which I'm very comfortable with.  5 and 0 tournaments are another story.  I have Manaless Ichorid built, but from what I'm seeing everyone say, this deck has slim chances on games 2 and 3 against prepared opponents.  I have Ad Nauseam and Doomsday built as well, but ANS feels like a gimped version of TPS and I'm still learning Doomsday.

Sorry, this is getting long winded.  Basically I have Manaless Ichorid, Doomsday and Ad Nauseam Storm built for 5 proxy formats.  I'm looking for other options, and also for 0 proxy format deck suggestions.  Thanks.

I happen to think that Selkie-Strike Noble Fish can be played pretty easily on 0-5 proxies and the deck is really solid
Against Tezz, Remora, and Staxx.

Check out my thread in the Vintage Open Forum entitled "Noble Fish: Post GUW variants Here!" and make sure to check out a recent list as the deck has undergone many important improvements since that first post. I can also PM you a list when I'm at my computer later tonight if you wanna know what I'm running.

Good luck finding a deck

Peace-

Storm

Manaless Ichorid is considerably more powerful than everyone thinks, even in the face of hate.  However, hate can be a problem at smaller, local events - if someone routinely plays the deck repeatedly (and does well), other people will definitely be prepared for it.  I'd still highly recommend it in a 5-proxy environment, because on 5 proxies you have a fully-functioning, tier-1 Vintage deck.

For zero proxy (and even 5 proxy), I would definitely consider Elves.  There are a few threads about it on these forums, and at some point this week a free article about it will go up on Starcity.  I'll post the link when that happens.  You can replace the Mox Emerald and Black Lotus with a Lotus Petal and Elvish Spirit Guide with minimal impact on the deck, and this deck does VERY well against semi-powered Vintage decks and budget decks.

Noble Fish is also a very good choice, as mentioned above.

Selkie can be a dangerous choice for a 5 proxy meta.  The deck is designed to beat the "best" decks vintage has to offer: Tezz, TPS, Shops, etc etc.  You'll be hard pressed to compete if the meta is not willing to buy fetches and blue duels.  If you face off against mono-red burn or Sui-black every round you'll be a world of hurt.

Which is why I like the Elf sugguestion.  Elf combo (as outlined above) beats the pants off all those other budget decks.  It's natural enemies are Shop decks (running sphere's and/or chalices), Faster combo decks, and to an extent Tezz can be a coin toss.  But no worries there because all those decks are all a few $G's even with 5 proxies.

Here is  a link to a thread over on MTGSalvation on viable budget decks.

http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=153207

But as a general idea you might consider the following archetypes

Black Suicide (suggested by SMenendian)
Elves! - (Numerous references check these forums for stuff from Rich Shay)
Merfolk (a version won Catalan Vintage League February 28th 2009 (74 players))
RG Beatz (suggested by SMenendian)
Belcher (suggested by SMenendian)
UW Fish(A version of this deck placed top 8 at Swiss Vintage League March 1st 2009 (53 players))
Goblins (A version of this deck placed 2nd at Xtreme Games April 19th 2009 (26 players))
GW Beatings (thread right here, with references to SMenendian)
GB Oath (yada, yada, yada -check the thread)
Nauseous Kobolds (but you already have an Ad Nauseum build)
Flash (using Cunning Wish to help find flash)

Non of these decks listed in the thread contain Power 9, Bazaar, Workshops, Drains, Imperial Seal or Grim Tutor.

Steve Menedian has soldified these decks into generic listing so using his name but countless others have actually played these decks.

I am not so sure how they fare in a non-powered field but I think in a powered field they can at least be competitive.
