Small tournament. Less than 20 folks. 5 rounds, cut to top 4. I didn't take notes, so this will be short.
4 dark ritual 2 cabal rit 3 chrome mox 1 LED 1 Blotus 2 on color moxen sol ring mana vault mana crypt
4 ad nas 1 repeal 2 chain of vapor 1 hurkyls recall 4 duress 2 thoughtseize 2 pact of negation merchant scroll DT VT MT imp seal 2 divining top ywill dconsultation 3 tendrils ancestral recall bstorm ponder
4 u sea 4 delta 2 swamp island bloodstained mire
sb 3 dark confidant 2 yixlid jailer 2 pithing needle 1 relic 2 hurklys 1 chain of vapor 1 massacre island swamp darkblast
Rd 1 I beat shops, Rd I lost to Tezz (Mastriano), rd3 I beat goblins, rd4 and 5 I beat drain decks (prob tezz). Top four was Mark trogdon with Mono red shops, a guy on Oath, myself, and Yangtime with drain tendrils (using predict as a draw engine . . . wtf?). I beat trogdon, then split with jerry. He beat me 2-0 though, after the split.
I don't want to talk about my matches, because at such a small tournament, I would not be happy with anything less than a finals appearance. I want to talk about the deck for a little bit, because almost no one plays it still, and that's a real shame. If I play both days in pitssburg, I will for sure play this one of those two days.
The deck, as per usual, is clearly misbuilt. I built it on the drive there, and decided to try out some things. Namely, the repeal, which is insane vs goldfish. However, it is less than exciting vs a real opponnent. Another chain of vapor is best here. Chain answer the same problems, plus teeg, while building storm and mana. Repeal does not. It should get cut.
The other problem is the island. I expected a lot of shops, and was mostly correct. However, I lost game one of the finals because of that basic island in my opener. It took me off double black for many turns, and I lost by one turn. Had I been able to make two plays a turn instead of one, I would have taken that game. Another fetch is fine here. However, in the board, I am not sure whether another swamp and island is better than two islands vs shops. Having blue mana that cant be wastelanded is so clutch, because you will always need to bounce something before you combo.
the board is fine. massacre should probably become a perish. most fish builds these days are green based. nearly all have access to teeg. he's a giant boner vs ad nas.
i lost a few games to my own ad nas. three I think. Adding back in time vault, plus key might be one way to solve this. Randomly winning games that way would have stopped me from desperately flipping to ad nas, needing another mana source, at low life totals. However, one of those losses was because I attempted a turn one win. Had I waited a turn or two, I would have easily won. But I wanted to push my luck, and see how many turn ones I could get in a day.
The answer was three, with an equal number of turn two wins. The deck is just so powerful and quick. Winning before the other player even goes is just gross when you know they are not playing FOW in their 75.
So yeah. This deck is still viable. I'd like to generate some discussion on it.
