Report
Round1: Aj Grasso MUD
Game1: Aj comboed me out quick with Metalworker + Staff.  I think I dropped a lock piece but it was too little too late especially when that's on my 2nd turn.
Game2: I think I locked him out real quick in this one with an early blowout of Strip lock + Smokestack/ Powder Keg.  I remember him having Metalworker but me getting Tangle Wire to go with my beater.  I think
Game3: Definitely was a big war of attrition.  I remember him having a Metalworker and me almost punting by naming Metalworker with Needle.  I think I won by activating things with Karn and throwing them after I grudged his Karn in the early game.
1-0
Round2: Josh Barkon Oath
Game1/2: I got thrashed pretty much summed up.  No notes/ life totals but I know it was 0-2 and it wasn't even close at all.  He definitely Oathed both games and just wrecked me with it, I think I tried to put up a fight the one game but just didn't come close to getting there.
1-1
Round3: Matt Elias Oath:
Game1: Worked as it should, he got an active Oath with Orchard.  I had Darkblast but drew it one turn 2 late so that I could possibly stablilize.
Game2: I went turn 1 Shop Mox, Trinisphere.  Turn 2 Land, Turn 3 Land Ancestral into Tangle Wire.  He scooped when I dropped a beater and he had no way to come back.
Game3: He kept what he said was a rough hand.  He opened on 2 Mox, I went Strip, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt Chalice on 2.  He Forced but didn't draw a land.  I went Karn turn 2 and killed a land.  He scooped shortly thereafter when I had a Thorn and a Keg on 2 out as well.
2-1
Round4: Dominic Red Stax/ Workshop Aggro
Game1: He opened up with a bunch of stuff and Magus of the Moon.  I worked my way into locking him in a marathon match.  He had a Smokestack while we both had Crucibles out.  I had about 15 permanents too, but no answer to Magus.  He ramped up Smokestack to try and answer my permanents when I had an active Welder.  I thought about it a while but realized that if I just let his Smokestack eat his permanents I could survive too.  He almost got there in the end with Magus and then Welder, but I got a Tangle Wire with 3 when he had Magus, Welder, Mountain, and Shop and he chose to keep his Magus untapped to attack.  This allowed me to go EoT weld out Tangle Wire for Stack, add a counter in upkeep and then weld in Tangle Wire for a mox.  He scooped it up when he had 0 permanents and I had Trinisphere.
Game2: I blew him out pretty bad.  I remember going turn 1 Mox City of Brass Demonic for Tinker, then turn 2 drop Powder Keg and pop to oust his only mana sources in moxen, as well as a Shop to cast Thorn.  Next turn I Tinkered for Titan and won after having needled Welder.
3-1
Round5: John Jones 4 Color Welder Control?
Game1: I beat him down with Double Welder with a bunch of Stax stuff out.  I tinkered for Trisk when I had 0 other artifacts in yard making his welder relevant although tapped.  I shot his welder with my Trisk and then proceeded to Weld Trisk in and out to ping him while having him Waste/ Strip locked.  (Not sure which)
Game2: I dropped an early Thorn without Shop when he had the same amount of mana and was on the play.  A mistake, that bit me in the ass.  turn 3 I had Mana Vault, Barbarian Ring, Gemstone Mine, and Workshop in play.  I cast Darkblast with Barbarian Ring and Gemstone Mine to which he Negated.  I could have cast REB had I tapped out right and realized the magnitude of killing Welder.  I didn't though, and he went untap Thirst discard Sphinx of the Steel Wind, and bashed me.
Game3: I believe I had an early Welder and land/ permanent destruction.  I remember having a tangle wire with Titan in play.  His only permanent was Welder and I had Trini or 2 Thorn in play as well.  Tangle Wire died leaving him 1 turn to use Welder to Stop Titan but I welded it back and played a Tangle Wire giving me the win.
4-1
Round6: Allen TPS
Game1: I had a busted start with him countering something but running out of cards.  I Tinkered for Titan and rode him to victory although I felt like I should have lost since I did nothing but attack.
Game2: I totally locked him out of the game and started winning with Karn activating artifacts to attack.  Ended up with like 2 Sphere effects, Crucible, and double Wire.
5-1
Top8: Steve Tezz
Game1: I felt so out of the game that I was in it.  He opened with Duress taking my thorn, kind of suspicious considering I had Trini too.  I go turn 1 Trini, he drains with his lotus.  then goes vamp for gifts and gifts but it is too early in the game for it to be effective and he searches up FoW, Chain of Vapor, Hurkyl's, and Ancestral.  I give him Chain and Ancestral.  I build up my board and develop Crucible with a bunch of lands including Barbarian Ring.  He Time Walks and casts Yawg. Will but Ancestrals into utter junk.  He pretty much fizzles but gets a Tezz. with Vamp.  He searches up Key with Tez, to which I EoT Barbarian Ring then untap recur it and Barbarian Ring him again so he only gets 1 use out of him.  Then I just keep using Barbarian Ring and win the game.
Game2: He goes turn 1 Mox Land Time Vault.  I go Workshop Tangle Wire, but he has the Voltaic Key so I scoop it up.
Game3: I keep a questinable hand the same as him, but he draws really well.  He said he had Mana Vault and 5 lands on the draw.  He therefore drew 3 runners being Voltaic key, into mystical into Tinker for Inkwell.  Meanwhile I am building up mana but am 1 short of being able to cast anything relevant such as my 2 tangle wire or my Titan in hand because I have double Thorn in play and no Workshop.

All in all a good day in my books.  I did better than expected, had a lot of fun, got cards I needed, and walked away with a Volcanic Island for my efforts.  Well run tournament, good turnout (Not sure on numbers) and great environment to play in at Alternate Universes.  BTW I'm Will Magrann in case anyone was wondering.

Good Job on your first tournament back! It was a pleasure playing you.

In our top 8 match, topdecking Mystical was nice but the Key did not really matter at all. When I drew it I really wasn't excited at all, since my hand was no business.

Just a note, in Rd 1 against AJ their was a point where you had Smokestack out for 1 in game 3. If you would have bumped it up to 2 it would have locked him out of the game, instead it gave him multiple turns to try to mount a come back. It turns out that it doesn't matter as you won anyways

Ah thanks for the note Steve, I was definitely a little worried I was going to punt the match against AJ and so I played conservative.  Afterwards I noticed that I had given him a 3-4 turn window to get out of my soft lock but at the time I didn't think of it.  Thank you for pointing that out though and grats on getting 2nd though I think you deserved to win.

It only took me, what, 8 months of telling you guys to get back into Vintage?   Seriously... although next time you come to me for advice I may just encourage you to cut all the good cards instead of talking you out of it like this time  Very Happy

Anyway again nice job, let me know if you're looking to test Vintage, we usually play on Tuesdays...
