yeah cory beat me.. still trying to figure out how. i had such a huge advantage after sideboard. blah. he made an awesome play game 1 though. he baited me by playing some spell (dark confidant?) and i drained it. he had one land untapped and a painter out. he then drops a grindstone. i have no counters but he's tapped out and can't use it. i have a bunch of tutors in my hand so i can find answers next turn so it's not a huge problem. he then drops a lotus and activates it for the win!

I won a game against dredge where I mulled to 4 (couldn't find a leyline) and kept the following hand on the draw:

island
yixlid jailer
yixlid jailer
gifts ungiven

Draw for my turn: mox jet

Win.

Highlight of my day.

Oh, and I got a near mint UL time vault by trading in a bunch of t2 uncommons/rares to Superstars. woohoo.

Game 2 oath owned me. Even though I was getting lots of tempo from dark confidants on the board the oath damage clock was too much.

Game 3 my deck did an amazing job containing you. I was able to extirpate away your early game vampiric tutor target for ancestral forcing you to burn your demonic tutor for ancestral again which then got pyroblasted. I dropped a null rod to nullify the time vault you had in hand and you dropped an early oath.  I was able to get incrementally ahead with several night whispers while your deck was missing the dark confidants you had to side out for the oath transformation. I basically built up my hand until I had a painter, two blasts, a diabolic edict and dark confidant in hand to clear the oath on the board (after you countered the first blast to the oath) and then lay down a dark confidant to gain same tempo. Your deck then kept laying oath after oath like some weird oath producing machine but confidant kept feeding me either pyroblast to nuke the oath or a diabolic edict to get a time walk on your oathed up fatties. The main thing is my deck managed to put you into topdeck mode while I had a bob to fuel my painter blast edict engine.

It was a tight game and it was a pleasure playing you and your sideboard really is my deck's worst nightmare. My deck just really shined in that match.

You got me good Sad

I still top 8ed though, I guess. My sb was unreal garbage, and I think chalice is kind of bad.

I don't know anything about vintage, though.

I just got really lucky that match Smile

Chalice is decent.. maybe try the version that has force of wills in it? It seems pretty good. Keep playing vintage, it's awesome. 22 person tournament where you can win $250? Try finding that in another format around here!

Drrrreeeeaaaam Haaaaaaallllllsssss!!!

I've been toying with a similar deck.  There's just something about casting Cruel Ultimatum in a vintage setting that brings a huge smile to my face.  Well done.

Careful Study is really good, so I really think 4 Study should have been fit in there somehow. Also, there's virtually no Vintage in my area (Rockville, MD).

There are plenty of events in Philly, New York, and Jersey that are easily accessible if you have a car. I know when I took a gray hound to your area, it was only a 3 hour ride. So driving can't be too bad.

And yea, the FOW dredge deck is pretty decent. It at least made top 8 in the last 3 events in the area. And it won twice.

I had looked at results from a few events (like the Nationals tourney) and none of the California players ran Dark Confidant.  Now you all do?

Were you all just that disappointed in Night's Whisper?

I ran dark confidants and night whisper  Very Happy

Night whisper came in real handy when my bob was blocked for the moment by oath in the semi-finals match against Eric.

I'm a grad student. I don't really have time to drive 3 hours <__< I'm probably not even driving more than 1 hour for even ptqs, and I'm not a serious vintage player by any stretch of the imagination. "in my area" would be <= 1 hour distance.

I was still pumped on UBW Fish after my top 8 at the previous Eudemonia tournament and I was prepared to run out the same deck again this past Sunday in San Jose. However, I've never gotten around to reacquiring Dark Confidants or Wastelands, and I've never owned Null Rods to begin with. Since Jose (the guy from whom I would normally borrow these cards) wasn't going to be showing up, I had two options: I could stay at home, sleep in, take it easy, or I could do battle with TPS. The last time I played TPS people were playing loads of cards like Mystic Remora, Commandeer, and Null Rod/CotV. The Remoras are mostly gone, but I didn't like my chances against Tezz and Fish all day. Still, playing a bad deck is better than not playing at all, right?

Notes on my sideboard: I literally never brought in the Negators, nor did (or would) I ever want to. If I had Bob's (or if I had thought to proxy them) they would have been in that slot instead. Also, I played the Tarmogoyfs for two reasons. The first was that I thought, based on no statistical evidence or testing, that they would be better v. Fish and Shops that having some other card in that slot + having one more basic in my deck. Also, I had just traded for a Bayou, and I wanted to play it. Massacre, as always, was terrible. The fact that I play it proves beyond a shadow of doubt that I am a coward.

Anyway, I only played one Fish deck in 5 rounds of play. The Goyfs were good, but one game seems like a pretty small sample size. I also played and beat 3 Tezzeret decks (6-2 in games), so maybe this old pile of junk is better than I thought. Just be sure, if you play it, that you can sack out when you need to.

hey, I am Bryan.
The funny thing is: I won more games off tezz (3card win) than dream halls...
I think this deck is weak, even though I have top 8'd twice. I just got raped by redblasts/conf/duress..
I would have done much better if instead of cruel/commandeer/halls/asdf I had put in other consitancy cards or another win-con. I only continue to play it because it is FUn
