18 People showed up, so it's 5 rounds of swiss and cut to top 4

The Meta:

Top 4 played it out due to Austin seeing the Mox Sapphire as a $300 bill (if he takes CASH which Superstars hadn't done in a while), declining a $125 store credit split.

Ryan Devine (Terastodon Oath) beats Michael Klemic (UBR Painter control)
Brent Peterson (UBR Bob Tezzeret control) beats Austin Martinez (UBR Tezzeret Control)

This was a lot of fun. I'd like to send a big shout-out to my friend Tyler who convinced me not to try to play Dredge, as my deck loved me all day long (giving me 3 turn-two vault/key combos, among other broken hands).

My list was almost card-for-card what Matt Elias wrote about in his article Oath 2: Electric Boogaloo: http://www.starcitygames.com/magic/vintage/19282_The_Long_Winding_Road_Oath_2_Electric_Boogaloo.html I wanted to try Misdirection, so I played 1 less Spell Snare to fit 1 in (results: never got to do anything (at all!) with Misdirection)

Mini-Report:

Round 1: Eric with Belcher

Game 1: He keeps a terrible hand and never really does anything... I get a Jace and fateseal away all of his mana sources.

Sideboard: Out: Jacex2, Misdirection, Sphinx, Tezzeret, something else In: 2x Nature's Claim, 2x Pithing Needle, 2x Mindbreak Trap

Game 2: I play an early pithing needle on belcher, and he goes off on turn 3, playing an Empty The Warrens for like 16 goblins, but I had a Mindbreak Trap to stop it.

Round 2: Nate with Dredge

I chatted with him a little about how we both had the same idea: there had been no dredge here for 3 months, so the time was ripe. Fortunately, I came prepared for just this.

Game 1: In typical dredge fashion, he steamrolls me.

Out: 4x Mana Drain, 1x Spell Snare, 2x Jace, 1x Sphinx, 1x Rebuild

In: 3x Ravenous Trap, 2x Yixlid, 1x Relic, 2x Pithing Needle, 1x Terastodon

Game 2: In typical 9 hate cards fashion, I steamroll him.

Game 3: This one gets funny as he keeps a non-bazaar hand and tries to beat down with creatures. With his men tapped, I play an oath and a time walk, get out a Terastodon, and then play a massive yawg will for vault/key.

Round 3: Dont' remember your name with Elves!

Game 1: I have turn 2 vault/key.

Out: 2x Jace, 1x Spell Snare, 1x Rebuild
In: 2x Mindbreak Trap, 2x Pithing Needle

Game 2: He gets a bunch of elves, but I have turn 1 orchard/oath and turn 2 I get Iona when he's ready to go off.

Round 4: Jeff (LotusHead) with Stax

Game 1: I have a turn 2 vault/key and he doesn't have stuff to stop me.

Out: 2x Jace, 1x Gifts Ungiven, 1x Iona
In: 2x Nature's Claim, 1x Rack and Ruin, 1x Terastodon

Game 2: He can't seem to get anything with his bazaar as he discards colored card after colored card with no mana in sight. I put a tezz win together eventually.

Round 5: Draw with Brent Peterson into top 4

Semifinals: Michael Klemic with Painter Control

Game 1: He mulligans to 6 and I have turn 2 vault/key.

Out: 1x Sphinx, I think
In: 1x Terastodon, I think

Game 2: We both mulligan. This one is pretty sweet. I force an early spell that I should have misdirected, so when he red blast-destroy-mode's my game-winning tezz, I can't misdirect it, and I also can't counter his hardcast Sundering Titan.

Game 3: He mulligans to 4 and never really gets into the game. I had a ton of countermagic in this one.

All in all, an extremely successful day. I made a few mistakes (twice I neglected to draw a card with my Library when I could/should have), but they didn't cost me much (other than the game-loss mistake to Michael). I was very glad I didn't play Dredge, as I would probably not have fared as well, and would probably not have enjoyed the play quite as much. I did miss my Imperial Seal tech that I've played in past Oath lists, and I'd like to find a place to put it (perhaps the Misdirection that never did anything).

With my winnings, I bought the cards I was missing to build the stone-cold Vault deck with Transmute Artifact that I've seen in a few places (though my Transmute Arifacts went missing! Sad).

Round 1 I lose the die roll.  Mark Arce leads with Lotus, land, probably a mox and 2 Oath of Druids.  I could have played Welder and Lodestone Golem turn 1 otherwise.  Turn 2 he TimeTwisters! (WTF?) so I happily get a new grip of 7 and lay down some stax stuff. Turn 3 he plays Forbidden Orchard, so I lay down my guys.  Turn 3 he declines to Oath. (?) A few turns later it clicks that he has is Oath targets in hand. Smile So I beat him with dudes till he's at 2 and he's forced to Oath up Terastodon. Unfortunately, it's about 8th from bottom of deck, and he may have misplayed somewhere. Whew! I dodged that one somehow.

I start playing my Stax stuff, and he starts getting the Time Vault/Voltaic Key thing happening, but with Smokestack at 2, it's really hard for him.

I dunno exactly what is going on here, but my permanents have counters on them, which is bad news.  Arce Decked himself 2/3 games vs me Smile

Potato deciding which Vintage cards will best advance his plans versus dredges shitty legacy cards. Smile

Say the brokenest combo in all of Magic! Time Vault Key with fatty dude out!

Brent (left) always has REB backup to his FOW on YawgWin.

Belcher in the house!

Klemic sees this as "I get to keep 6 of these awesome cards!"

I've never met Roger with the MUD deck before, but he's a fellow shop player, so we're like brothers.

In the orchard wars, it is currently 1 - 1

ok, 2 - 2

Klemic hoping his Gifts Ungiven package will result in Teh Win!

Austin don't give a fuck about Dredge. 0 Hate in his sideboard (see top post for proof), he just mows down those dredging mo'fos. 2-1 bitches!

Mark Arce with all his Oathy dudes all oathed up.  Oh, and all of his deck too.  Sad

And Klemic just loses g1 to Oath in top 4

Tinker with Jace resolved already. Looking pretty bad for Austin at the moment.

Brent puts a stop to this Yawgwill nonsense.  Or maybe this was the game that Austin resolved the Will to play his broken graveyard again?

I guess Yawgmoth's Will resolved after all...

Pics were chronological till now.  This is in Swiss. Brent Pwns Dredge handily.

I dunno when this happend, but exciting field!

Austin goes infinite turns with Tezz, then goes Ultimate with Jace on Dredge.  (Now with 3 card library).  Austin casts Ancestral on opponent, takes a few more turns, then gets the ultimate kill condition: Compulsive Research targetting Dredge!

Klemic fighting the good fight  His Titan eventually gets in there, but I don't remember if Klemic got this game or not.

Horrible horrible horrible Oaths. Twice I was forced to Oath when I held a creature or two, and both times it was to the 2nd to last card in my deck. I'm almost 100% certain I made the wrong call on destroying permanents with Terastodon, but hey, I learned the hard way, and at least I won't do it again. First match against Jeff (LotusHead) was pretty epic (again; our last epic match saw me playing Fish) though I'm pretty sure I tutored for the wrong card, and Oathed incorrectly as a result.

I WILL get better at playing Vintage. Playing with the guys at stars really helps, everyone's pretty friendly and the quality of players here is definitely top-notch. I may be getting my ass handed to me over and over, but at least I'm getting a first-rate education.

I played this list

// Lands
    1  Bazaar of Baghdad
    3  City of Brass
    3  Gemstone Mine
    4  Mishra's Workshop
    1  Strip Mine
    1  Tolarian Academy
    3  Wasteland
    1  Mishra's Factory (4)

// Creatures
    1  Duplicant
    4  Goblin Welder
    4  Lodestone Golem
    1  Sundering Titan

// Spells
    3  Chalice of the Void
    3  Crucible of Worlds
    1  Mana Crypt
    1  Sol Ring
    1  Mana Vault
    1  Black Lotus
    1  Mox Emerald
    1  Mox Jet
    1  Mox Ruby
    1  Mox Sapphire
    3  Null Rod
    3  Smokestack
    4  Tangle Wire
    1  Tinker
    1  Trinisphere
    1  Ancestral Recall
    1  Balance
3  Thorn of Amethyst  (I actually played Spheres, but recently changed them to accomodate my man plan sideboard)
    1  Mox Pearl
    1  Crop Rotation

// Sideboard
SB: 1  Duplicant
SB: 3  Aven Mindcensor
SB: 1  Red Elemental Blast
SB: 1  Ensnaring Bridge
SB: 2  Nature's Claim
SB: 1  Diabolic Edict
SB: 1  Echoing Truth
SB: 2  True Believer
SB: 3  Seal of Cleansing

Somebody finally convinced me that Ancestral Recall was in fact better than Ancient Stirrings. Plus, i decided to play Crop Rotation and Balance maindeck, so no room for the uberponder.

My deck did well enough, 3-0 then losing to Potato's broken Oath and losing game 3 to Klemic (he got his sideboard cards pwning me, and I didn't. Sad )

Congrats to All.

Little bit more respect for the dredge players would be nice.

When Austin (my teammate) was settling on his sideboard, I asked him what his plan against Dredge decks was, and "I don't give a fuck about dredge, I'll just combo off in their faces, bitches!" was his response.

I said nothing bad about dredge players, and truth be told, I have only beaten dredge once in a tourney because they got that unlucky and I misplay horribly against dredge.
