Thanks to Richmond Comix for another great Vintage tournament.  Despite going up against a PTQ or some other Standard nonsense, we managed to draw 20 players, including two who came more than four hours from North Carolina!  Hopefully the increased turnout trend continues.  The next event will be scheduled soon, likely in September for a Time Walk (but not to conflict with the SCG event in Baltimore).  So stay tuned!

Top 8
Chris Griffin - Belcher
Josh Adams - GWB Beats
Matt King - Tezz/Vault combo
Charles - Tezz homebrew with maindeck Leylines
Andrew Taylor - Bob Tendrils
Nic Turk - MUD
Nat Moes - Bomberman
Ryan Seeley - Dredge

Updated with pairings!

Charles (Tezz) beat Nick Turk (MUD)
Nat Moes (Bomberman) beat Matt King (Tezz)
Ryan Seeley (Dredge) beat Josh Adams (GWB Beats)
Chris Griffin (Belcher) beat Andrew Taylor (Bob Tendrils)

Top 4
Charles (Tez) beat Chris Griffin (Belcher)
Ryan Seeley (Dredge) beat Nat Moes (Bomberman)

Finals
Charles (Tez) beat Ryan Seeley (Dredge) to take home the Imperial Seal!

Thanks again to Tommy and the Richmond Comix crew.  Hopefully we'll get even more players for the next event!

Top 8 pairing was

Charles beat Nick Turk
Nat Moes beat Matt King
Ryan Seeley beat Josh Adams
Chris Griffin beat Andrew Taylor

I piloted Dredge for a 2nd place finish, wish I couldve taken it all the way but some serious errors in the finals did me in. Will post a tournament report later

As promised .. a tournament report as I dont think Charles will be posting one.

A lot of this is going off memory, so I might miss a few items.

With 20 people showing, it seemed like the bulk of the decks were BGW/UGW beat decks. There were a few dredge players, maybe 5 Tezzeret based decks, one Belcher, 1 ANT and 1 Stifle/Naught.

My list:

Maindeck:

Artifacts:
4 Serum Powder
4 Chalice of the Void

Creatures:
4 Golgari Grave-Troll
4 Stinkweed Imp
2 Golgari Thug
4 Narcomoeba
4 Bloodghast
2 Ichorid
1 Flame-Kin Zealot
1 Fatestitcher

Enchantments
4 Bridge from Below
4 Leyline of Sanctity

Sorcery
4 Cabal Therapy
2 Dread Return

Instant
2 Natures Claim

Land
4 Bazaar of Baghdad
4 Undiscovered Paradise
2 City of Brass
3 Petrified Field
1 Dakmar Salvage

Sideboard:
4 Serenity
2 Natures Claim
4 Chain of Vapor
2 City of Brass
1 Ichorid
2 Darkblast

Round 1 vs Joe Tanner playing Tezz with Goblin welder
G1: I went off fast and he scooped
G2: He locked me down pretty hard with Tormods Crypt and the ability to recur it with Goblin Welder
G3: Overcame some hate and went off
1-0

Round 2 vs Daniel Sinclair with GBW beat
G1: Went off on turn 2, he scooped
G2: I had some early dredge, he played a big Tarmo, Dark Confidant and Planar Void. I dug for hate but found it too late
G3: Removed his hate and went off.
2-0

Round 3 vs Matt King with Tezzeret
Matt is a new player to vintage and thus was unfamiliar with Dredge.
G1: Scooped after turn 2
G2: Scooped after turn 2
3-0

Round 4 vs Nick Turk with MUD
G1: Nick wastes my bazaar, plays some creatures and beats me up before I can do a lot
G2: Nick plays a lot of fast mana and a Tormod Crypt but had no pressure aside from a Mishras factory. I slow dredged him, baiting his Crypt with Ichorids and Bloodghasts, he crypted my at what I felt was the wrong time. I went off, 1 turn before I was to win he plays a relic of progentis and wipes my yard but it isnt enough to stop me as my bloodghast in the field got me there. He played an Orb of Dreams in G2 which didnt do much and even hampered him a little as it prevented his wasteland from hitting me immediately
G3: Nick played the Orb of Dreams again but this time with devastating results. A quick Jug plus a sculptiing steel copy had me on the clock. Ontop of that his Orb of Dreams and Tangle wire ensured that I would have trouble getting blockers and quickly died.
3-1

Round 5 vs Andrew Taylor with TPS/BoB
ID

Quarter Finals
vs Josh Adams - GWB Beats
G1: Went off
G2: Went off

Semi Finals
vs Nat Moes - Bomberman
G1: Went off
G2: Its a bit of a blur and I think I won this game also. Nat played Tormods Crypt but I slow dredged him by discarding my Bloodghasts 1 at a time and recurring them with Undiscovered Paradise. At one point he also had Pithing Needle on Bazaar but I Natures Claimed that. I believe what ultimately happened was I had 4 zombie tokens and bloodghast, Nat had an Engineered Explosives out but didnt have the mana to use it. I swing for 10, knocking him to 3. He blows up my Zombies and crypts in response removing my board and yard of everything but a Bloodghast, bouncing him to my hand. Nat was down to 2 lands and nothing else. I believe I discarded Bloodghast then dropped a land to bring him back, swung twice for the victory.

Finales
vs Charles - Tezz w/maindeck Leylines
Im guessing Charles was happy to see me in the finals, nothing like running leyline maindeck to give one confidence about their Dredge matchup

G1:

I booted it, plain and simple. He turn 0 Leylines me and asked if I have an answer to it. I replied yes and dug with my bazaar to find land to cast Natures Claim. I built up a very strong board position and was essentially 1 turn away from victory, when I noticed a few play errors.
First I hadnt floated a mana from Undiscovered Paradise at the end of my opponents turn in order to bring back my Bloodghast the following turn. This wasnt a lethal mistake but frustrating non-the-less. The lethal mistake I made was attempting to cast that dread return which walked right into his mana drain. Not only did I set him up with 4 mana, but I dumbfoundedly passed the turn with 2 cabal therpy in the yard and a half dozen creatures / zombie tokens on the board. Charles used the mana to cast tinker into Time Vault and then hardcast Tezz. Live and learn.

G2:

I had to mulligan down to 4 in order to find a Bazaar. It was a decent 4, also contained a Chain of Vapors to bounce his Leyline that he didnt need to mulligan for (must be ..)
Had a slow start, got rid of his Leyline, was building up my yard when he assembled Vault/Key. Nothing I really felt that I couldve done different that would have made a big difference.

Overall Leyline in the main proved to be irrelevant. Unmasks or more anti-GY hate wouldve suited me better. This is not to say Sanctity doesnt have its place, just in the meta that I was in, it wasnt all that effective.

We didn't register decks but I can ask around and see if people will post deck lists. As soon as I get a few minutes I'll post mine.
