While New England has a tremendous Vintage magic scene, I am quite fortunate that Pittsburgh has a thriving Magic scene of its own. Mr Nice Guy Games and the CMU Magic Club both have regular weekly drafts. Adam, of SW Randall Toyes in Squirrel Hill, has recently been trying to encourage constructed Magic, with weekly casual play. Last week, Adam informed me that he was going to host a constructed tournament at the store. And despite the fact that many of the players are casual and most did not have the cards to build a Vintage deck as might be seen on TMD, the event would be Sanctioned Vintage in order to allow people to use whatever cards they did own.

While schoolwork has kept me rather busy, the lure of Sanctioned Vintage was too much for me to pass up. And so the question that fell to me was what deck to play. While I could have played a fully-powered Vintage deck at this event, I believe it would have been inconsistent with the spirit in which the tournament was intended. And it probably would not have made for a particular enjoyable day for me, either. But one deck that I always enjoy playing, under all circumstances, is Jace the Precon. The Dual Deck from Jace vs Chandra. I thought that this preconstructed deck would be fun and challenging to play through the day. So, I decided to play Jace as a 60-card PreCon. I could use the sideboard to bring in more powerful Vintage-worthy cards if needed.

Here is the deck I played:

http://www.wizards.com/magic/tcg/productarticle.aspx?x=mtg_tcg_jacevschandra_themedeck#deck1

23  Island
1  Terrain Generator

1  Aethersnipe
1  Air Elemental
1  Bottle Gnomes
1  Brine Elemental
1  Errant Ephemeron
2  Fathom Seer
1  Fledgling Mawcor
1  Guile
2  Man-o'-War
1  Martyr of Frost
2  Mulldrifter
1  Ophidian
1  Quicksilver Dragon
1  Riftwing Cloudskate
2  Spire Golem
1  Voidmage Apprentice
2  Wall of Deceit
1  Waterspout Djinn
1  Willbender

1  Ancestral Vision
2  Condescend
2  Counterspell
1  Daze
1  Fact or Fiction
1  Gush
1  Jace Beleren
1  Mind Stone
2  Repulse

For the sideboard, I decided to allow myself to play a more broken set of cards. I played:
4 Force, 3 Mana Drain, 1 Sol Ring, 2 Jace the Mindsculptor, 2 Vedalken Shackles, 1 Ratchet Bomb, 1 Timewalk, 1 Ancestral Recall

I wasn't the only person from CMU to arrive at this event. Kris (the Scorekeeper) played the Tezzeret Precon, which had to be modified because it contains two Thirst for Knowledges; and Vassu, who played a 100 card EDH-legal deck with no sideboard.

Now, on to the report.

There were 12 people playing.

Round 1: Nathan with Academy 2-0
game1~Nathan suspends a Lotus Bloom. I open with Island, Go. Nathan has a second Vault of Whispers; I have another Island, Go. I evoke Mulldrifter, and Bloom hits. Nathan has a Thran Dynamo, and I respond with Fledgling Mawcor. Nathan then proceeds to play a Wurmcoil Engine. I hardcast a Mulldrifter, and take six damage. Karn then arrives on Nathan's side. I then play a Martyr of Frost and Man-O-War the Engine. With Lotus Bloom on the table, Nathan casts Demonic Tutor and attempts to play Mycosynth Lattice, which would let him use Karn to destroy all of my Islands; but fortunately, I have four blue cards and Martyr of Frost prevents this from happening. Over the next few turns, I continue attacking with my fliers are such cards as AEther Snipe keep bouncing Nathan's Engine.
game2~Nathan casts Mystical Tutor, getting Tinker. I Mana Drain his Tinker, and use the Drain mana to play Guile. Sonic Boom!

Round 2: Chris with Poison 2-0
game1~I spend my first three turns playing Islands and apssing. Errant Ephemeron gets suspended, and I play a morph on turn five leaving open Counterspell mana. Soon, another Morph enters the battlefield under my control, and Fathom Seer draws me some cards. I counter Chris' Tumble Magnet and win with my Illusion.
game2~Chris opts to draw, so I open with Island. I hardcast Daze on his Ichor Rats, and present a Spire Golem. I Mana Drain Hand of the Praetors, and cast Mulldrifter. I Fact or Fiction on his next end step, taking (Drain, Ancestral, Force) over (Jace, Fathom Seer). I Ancestral, cast Shackles, and Timewalk. Suddenly, on my end step, Chris casts Carrion Call. I repulse one token, and get a Poison Counter from the other. Soon, that Token is enjoying a Grafted Exoskeleton, but I win by attacking before hitting ten Poison.

Round 3: Dylan with White Weenie 2-0
game1~I mulligan. I start with an Island, while Dylan leasd with Kabira Crossroads, the white lifegain land. I have a Mindstone, and Dyland has a Soul's Attendant and a Serra Ascendant. I cast a Morph, who is matched by Ajani's Pridemate. I cast a Riftwing Cloudskate, who bounces the Cat. Dylan is at 25 life, as I start attacking to keep him below 30. AEther Snipe joins my time, buying me tempo against the horde of white creatures. Dylan attempts to cast Solemn Offering on my Mindstone, but I draw a card and deny him the four life. I repulse Serra's Ascendant and counter the Ajani Dylan attempts to play. I am able to out-tempo him long enough to win with fliers.
game2~Dylan begins with Soul's Attendant and Ajani's Mantra. Soon Goldenglow Moths begin to join his team. But I Fact or Fiction, and resolve Shackles to start stealing his creatures. I cast Guile, and Repulse him after he is Pacified. With Guile recast, I counter Baneslayer Angel, who joins my team thanks to Guile. I then counter Armored Ascension; and while I don't have any plains, now my Guile has flying. I use my two large creatures to broken Dylland from 35 to 0, while also using the Ultimate on Small Jace.

Round 4: Richard with Sui Black 1-0-1
game1~Richard begins by Thoughtseizing me, taking Ancestral Vision. I have a typical start of Island, Go. Richard has another Thoughtseize, taking my Fathom Seer. I suspend Riftwing, and then cast a Morph. Richard casts Demonic Tutor for Strip Mine, his third land. I have another Morph. My hand dies to a Mindtwist, and my Riftwing bounces one of Richard's lands. I have a Spire Golem to match his Hypnotic Specter, and my two-powered team administers sufficient damage before Richard can start launching Drain Life effects.
game2~I keep a one-Island hand with Force and Ancestral Vision, on the logic that I could Force a potential first-turn Ritual Necropotence, and that Ancestral Vision would let me get back into the game even if I don't hit my second land-drop. I also had Mindstone, so I only needed two lands to start functioning effectively. Richard Thoughteizes my Force, and casts a Phyrexian Arena, while I struggle to find a second land. Hymn eats away at my hand, but The Rack is nullified by my inability to cast any spells with one land. Ancestral Vision finally resolves, giving me a land as the last one drawn. I start building a board, and Force a Hypnotic Specter. I am playing out Morphs, while using bounce and counters to stop Korlash and withstand discard. Hypnotic Specter hits me, and I start losing cards. Eventually, Ratchet Bomb handles Arena and Specter while removing two of my own unexciting creatures. I cast Jace TMS, who Brainstorms me into Ancestral and Timewalk, which I put on top of my deck for safe keeping. I AEthersnipe Korlash and Drain memoricide. Another Arena hits, and I have Mull Drifter. At this point, Richard is at six life. I Force Korlash, but my Mulldrifter gets Edicted. Disk hits the table, and a spectator helpfully points out to Richard that the Disk will not kill Jace TMS. Great. But at this point, I am holding seven copies of Basic Island with two more atop my deck. Disk and Mutilate prevent my dealing any damage to Richard, who is kept alive since does remove Arena. Richard Thoughtseizes me, going to two life, and seeing that I have Counter Spell and Mana Drain. Richard is able to remove my Jace TMS, but I am at sixteen life. He launches a lethal Drain Life variant at me but I have the Counterspell. Time ends, and neither of us can defeat the other. Having won the first game in the match, I win the match.

Thus ends my Sanctioned Vintage tournament. I win free entry to a game convention later in November, plus six packs.

Props:
- Adam, for organizing a really fun Vintage tournament
- Scorekeeper Kris and Vassu for kicking around ideas for what to play at this event
- Giant Props to Christopher Moeller, the Magic artist, who arrived for this event. He was kind enough to alter playsets of Mindbreak Trap and Sower of Temptation for me. This was extremely awesome, and they look great.

Amazing. 4-0 at a VINTAGE tournament with a pre-con. That's just awesome.

Edit: corrected to 4-0.

It was 4-0. The last match ended with me being up a game, and ended in a draw for the second game. So, I got the match.

Thank you, Rich, for the excellent reporting and the props. I'm glad you enjoyed playing as much as I enjoyed running the event.

I definitely enjoyed seeing your performance with that pre-con. Really an inspiration to those of us who haven't been playing long.

Hopefully, I'll be putting another one of these together in the fairly near future. Obviously, I'll keep you and your fellows informed!

1 Tolarian Academy
1 Mox Opal (Sadly, I don't own a sapphire)
1 Bottle Gnomes
1 Skull Clamp

The cliques and Levithan were almost exclusively for the tezz vs jace match.  My plan was to face rich in the finals and always have a turn 2 tinker.  As you might gather things did not quite go to plan.

On to the report.

Round 1 vs. Tanya with Affinity

She started off with double cloud posts, and  a turn two arc bound worker + skullclamp.  I immediately become concerned that my opponent is playing real cards.  She follows that up with a cranial plating attack for five, while I play moon glove extract and kill it before she can clamp it.  I then cast a juggernaut, and she follows with an ornithopter equip with both plating and clamp.  On my turn I attack and we trade.   I follow it up with silver myr and thought cast.  She then plays a thopter foundry which I foil pitching clockwork condor, and island.  She plays a vesuva copying cloud post and I make stalking stones a creature.  I hit her for four, and play assembly-worker. On her turn she plays glimmer post, gaining the life back and arcbound crusher.  I keep on getting in and cast trip noose. On her turn she plays mycosynth lattice.  She initially doesn’t see both interactions that has with the lattice, but a few turns and an onithopter later, she sees it and I take 14 after tapping her crusher, I don’t draw trike or clasp, and lose the next turn.

In: Academy, 2 drains, 2 ratchet bomb, 2 Sower of temptation, Platinum Angel, Sol ring, Mox Opal, Skull clamp
Out: 4 island, 7 bad things

Game two is the dumbest game ever.  I keep a 1 lander with tinker and everflowing chalice on the play, and for my first draw naturally get the mox opal. Mize right?  She leads with sword of the meek.  I decide playing a precon was a poor choice.  I manage to get a land the next turn and chalice for 1.  She plays the foundry, but I have a plan. On my turn, I immediately tinker for platinum angel, and she blanches.  She tells me she doesn’t have any removal, as it’s all in her sideboard.  On her turn she demonics for cranial plating and thus begins the dumbest game of magic.  She plays a steel overseer which I sower and begin to make my team huge.  She keeps making thopters, and eventually gets to 40 life.  I finally find a ratchet bomb and blow it on two.  The next turn I tezzeret for the second ratchet bomb and destroy all the tokens.  My platinum angel with 6 +1/+1 counters and my master of etherium with 2 +1/+1 counters attacks for 40 over the course of 2 turns.

No changes

Game three we have 5 minutes left on the clock, this will be a tough one.  Fortunately for me she mulls to 5 and I have a busted start.  I have sol ring, and everflowing chalice combined with trike and pentavus.  I get these guys on turns 3 and 4 to her skullclamp, and take the match with 15 seconds left on the clock.

Round 2 vs. Richard with mono black discard

Richard went on to face Rich in the finals with what was one of the two real decks with real cards being played that day.
I start the match by almost loosing by having 59 cards, fortunately my silver myr is returned to me before I present, Mize!
He leads with turn 1 the Rack turn two demonic and turn three phyrexian arena.  I am back to regretting my choice.  He strip my mishra’s factory and hymns me.  He follows that with a korlash and another hymn.  He consume spirit’s a blocker, then consume spirits me.  I guess it’s true what they say “hymn hymn I win”

In: Academy, 2 Drain, 2 Ratchet Bomb, 2 Sower of Temptation, Sol ring, mox opal, skull clamp, 2 Vendilion Clique, Platnum Angel.
Out: 4 islands and 9 bad cards.

I get an early esperzoa with an artifact land and mox opal in play, so the esperzoa would cost nothing.  He chainer’s edicts me.  On his draw step I clique him taking mind twist., and he plays his second chanier’s edict on that.  I get a trike down, then tinker for Platinum angel while he plays a second rack.  He flashes back edict taking the trike.  I masticore lock my self the next turn to protect my angel, but he has to flashback the edict or face death.  On the last turn, I clique away his mutilate, but it wouldn’t have mattered, my angel was a 6/6 thanks to energy chamber and he only had 5 swamps and cabal coffiers.

No changes, inkwell isn’t as good against edict effects

I get rolled this game.  He starts with a thought seize for my mana drain, follows it with a hymn that his both my lands and then a hymn that hits my everflowing chalice and something else.  I get stuck on 1 land, but manage to draw out.  My trinket mage for skullclamp is doing a good job of keeping his korlash in check, as I keep drawing in to chumps, and skullclamp keeps them coming. He plays necro and refills.  I frown.  I finally stabilize and sower his korlash which doesn’t die thanks to his urborg.   On his turn, he simply demonics for consume spirit and kills me.  I guess winning after double hymn and missing a turn is too much to ask.

Round 3 Vs Brandon with Monoblack mediocre cards

My opponent leads with turn 2 blood seeker, and I feel good about my deck choice again.  I cast a few creatures and loose a bit of life, but then contagion clasp his seeker and start serving with my faerie mechanist.  He casts liliana and makes me discard, so I discard trike.  On my turn I argivian restoration it with energy chamber on the battlefield.  He casts dread, so I spell bomb it to his hand and kill liliana with my trike and mechanist.  He replays dread and I wait a turn so I can kill it with mishra’s factory block and trike shooting.  He plays child of night and bog raider niether of which can do much to a trike that gets bigger every turn.

In: Everything but bottle gnomes and inky.
Out: 4 islands and 11 bad cards

I mull to six this game on the draw. His first play is a mind rot which I mana drain.  This lets me play a chalice on 2 and then tinker for razor mane masticore.  The masticore gets in for 10 and then dies to doom blade.  He diabolic tutors and plays royal assassin which stops my clique beats.  Eventually I kill with contagion clasp and kill him with clique.

Round 4 vs. Dylan with TRUE CONVICTION

I didn’t take detailed notes for these games, probably because they were very dull.
He leads with turn 1 souls attendant then golden glow moth then Ajani’s pride mate.  I have steel overseer and steel wall so he can’t get through for much.  He however has Ajani’s mantra so his pride mate is getting bigger each turn.  I misplay by bouncing his pride mate on a turn where he can replay it and I don’t have the moon glove extract on the board.  I eventually die to armored ascension on a pride mate.  It was silly of me.

In: Everything but the gnomes
Out: 4 Island 10 bad cards

This game goes much better for me.  He has the early life gain, but I am able to stop his pride mate before things get too out of hand.  He plays his ultimate trump of baneslayer, which I cooly sower.  He then pacifisms my clique and arrests his baneslayer.  Bomb for 2 takes care of that pesky enchantment and his two pride mates, the second of which he played in to the bomb on 2.  I manage to get another ratchet bomb which I blow on 1 for his souls attendant and such.  I end the game by sowering a golden glow moth and attacking for lethal with marginal air creatures.

No changes.

I turn 3 tinker for inkwell, turn 4 clique away his Ajani.  The game somehow goes much longer as he got up to 27 when my inkwell came out.  I keep attacking with inkwell and he chumps a few times, both before learning it has trample and after.  He plays baneslayer and I just keep on getting in.  I clique away his true conviction and attack him down to three.  I then cast trike and he completely misses his souls attendant trigger which is good because then I don’t have to explain triggers and the stack and just kill him.

Final result 3-1, 8-3
Overall it was a blast.  Most of my opponents weren’t the best.  My first two round opponents were the toughest.  While not stellar players, they showed they understood the majority of game rules and didn’t need me to explain many interactions.  My last round opponent was odd.  He constantly asked me if it was his turn, and always had his hand ready to draw a card.  At one point, I cliqued him on his draw step for the fourth time in the match and he cast Ajani.  That’s it.  I say “draw step clique you” and he says “ok, Ajani.”  I was very confused.
It was unfortunate that I could not face rich in the finals, my inkwell leviathan was in the board just for that match, and who wouldn’t want to see Jace v Tezzeret in the finals of a vintage tournament?

Props: S.W. Randall for throwing this tournament.  Rich for telling me about it, and agreeing to play a precon. Vasu, for playing a full edh deck without any side board.  My first three opponents for being cool people who I enjoyed battling.

Slops:  Necropotence, for preventing me from coming back from a double hymn.  My last round opponent for being very impatient. And bottle gnomes, seriously, no one played casual burn?.

Way to fail at reading. Or are you the sort that considers it a noble endeavor to stomp on scrubs then crow about your amazing win record?

Per above, Rich was just playing the game on the level of the participants, to make things more enjoyable for everyone. It's a far cry from "shitting on the format", especially when you consider than none of the decks there were truly representative of competitive Vintage.

Delha, the majority of your posts are very hostile; which is fine you have your opinion and you like to flex it. I do find it hilarious that someone with a signature such as yours would foul someone for ego stroking. For what it is worth my post was meant in jest, chill out.

Guys, cut it out. Take further back and forth to PM. Also, sarcastic digs don't lend themselves well to the civil atmosphere we're trying to cultivate here on TMD.

Missed out on this, wish I knew about it. I hope they have another one, I have plenty of casual decks to bring. If your looking for a similar meta, New Dimensions in Century 3 mall does vintage on Saturdays. It was sanctioned at one point, from what I understand now it is still sanctioned but allows 10 card proxy so I dont know how they swing that. Although they had a house rule of no sideboards the last time I was there. If your interested I would just call them and find out what the story is.

But it was a meta with sliver decks, MBC, Elvish Piper.dec and other casual type stuff.

Rich does the right thing.
Some time ago, a friend of mine called me for a Vintage Tournament on his University and asked me for a deck. I went to play with a fully powered Gifts deck and borrow him another fully powered deck. It was a very boring day. All the people in his university played "type solring" decks without any kind of hate, and he don't told it me. Obviously we playerd on finals...

I just now found this post and wanted to comment that this is the best idea ever.  Type solring...is prevalent here and (as posted in a previous thread that I greatly regret):  my friend and I stomped that format with powered flash.  I wish we had done what you did.  What you guys did is really noble in several ways and I thoroughly enjoyed your posts.
