So with all the new(ish) gush mania, I wanted to see if I could make a deck that was "anti-gush", but could also do well against some (if not all if possible) of the top and most played decks.

First off the decklist, then discussion/syngergy etc. etc.  blah blah.

Creatures:(20)
4 x Goblin Guide
4 x Dark Confidant
4 x Gorilla Shaman
4 x Grim Lavamancer
4 x Kederekt Parasite

Instants:(12)
1 x Vampiric Tutor
1 x Demonic Consultation
4 x Lightning Bolt
3 x Smash to Smithereens
3 x Shrapnel Blast

Sorcery:(2)
1 x Demonic Tutor
1 x Yawgmoth's Will

Artifacts:(12)
2 x Liquimetal Coating
3 x Ankh of Mishra
4 x Moxen
1 x Mana Crypt
1 x Lotus Petal
1 x Black Lotus

lands:(14)
4 x Badlands
4 x Bloodstained Mire
4 x Blood Crypt
1 x Mountain
1 x Swamp

Sideboard:(work in progress)
X Leyline
X yixilid Jailer
X shattering spree
X Doom Blade (sphinx/Myr?)
X ??????

The idea is more or less a Burn deck, with backup in the forms of damage from Parasite, and Ankh, and my opponent.  Between Fastbond Gush, Tutors, Fetchlands, and Confidants (and Mana Crypt....) that 20 life walls breaks down fast.

Confidant - obv draw engine, other than y win, everything is 0-2 mana.

Goblin Guide - this guide is good for 3 reasons:
1.  2/2 on turn 1 that can swing, it puts an early clock on for many decks.
2.  It provides info, am I playing MUD, Blue Control, Fish?  This lets me know when to hold bolts and what not back, or just go ftw.
3. With Ankh of Mishra the lands they may get off Guide turn into 2-4 damage.

Parasite - Underworld Dreams was restricted once.  This guys costs 1 mana.  Turns gushes into shocks.  Puts a clock on the table with Time Vault out.  Only prob is even with the 12 red creatures I may not have enough red perms.

Mox Monkey - eats moxen, and lands with LiquiMetal coating out, thus making them play more right into the Ankh's.

Grim Lavamancer - he does what he does.

Smash to Smithereens - not only instant artifact destruction, which all decks play SOME artifacts other than dredge, but a damage source as well.  Also works well with Liqiumetal Coating.

LQMC - mind u this is not a liquid termites deck, this is more or less backup for shaman/smash, and privdes shrap fodder.

Shrapnel blast - only 3 cuz only 12 artifacs, but remeber you can turn 1 of your perms into an artifact in response to removal, and shrap it. Cheapest and best damage dealer around I beleive.

Bolt - duh.

Ankh - 5 damage for fetches.  4 damage from Gush.  Crucible turns into shock a turn.  Whats not good about this card in the current meta?

Tutors/Y win - they find stuff that helps you win, and then recurs them all.  Yea heard thats good.

I been testing and the deck has been doing descent, but has trouble against MUD (due to low land count/waste), and storm without Gush is a hard race.  Parasite Helps tho.

Discuss, tell me I suck, and give advice.  Thanks.

Warped Devotion?   Very Happy
Maybe a way to fit Root Maze? Just throwing stuff against the wall here.

Regarding your list itself:
  • Why no 4th Ankh? Resolving two strikes me as absolutely brutal.
  • Why Goblin Guide? If you successfully force them into skipping land drops, then you want those dead draws still in their deck.
  • Agreed that Kederekt Parasite looks shaky, I'd probably cut it. As you said, too hard to turn on, and I figure you can find better.
  • I like the mainboard Smashes.
  • Do you think 4x Shaman is too many?
  • Is Doom Blade enough by way of answers to a quick Tinkered bot?

I suppose it's mostly the thought that this format is just one big Mistake; and not even a very sophisticated one at that.
Much like humanity itself.

Runeflare Traps are really useful right now. Between gush, jace and bazaar of Baghdad there are alot of decks that draw 3+ cards a turn.

Bloodchief Ascension could be good with all that direct damage on the opponent's turn and attacks on your turn.
It can also give you a little more game against Dredge and Oath game one.
