I saw this deck here:
http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=41625.0 that won Japanese Vintage champs. I'm not a fan of 2x Tidespout or Golden Gun and wanted to try something different. I only made two changes to the maindeck but completely reworked the side for our meta. The main reason I wanted to play Oath was that it was the only remaining major archetype that I haven't made a top 8 with at Blue Bell. As stupid as that may sound, it was a goal of mine having previously made top 8 with Null Rods, Drains, Dark Rituals, Shops and Bazaars. Anyway, Sean and I made the trip to BB without one Ryan Fisher. He paid off his debt to me a few weeks ago so BBGD 14 is the first tourney that I have to pay for myself in awhile. We got there early needing to trade for 2x Forbidden Orchard and a Misty Rainforest. I found someone who had all three, borrowed another card and easily made it under 15 proxies. Here's the list:
Mana (25)
4 Forbidden Orchard
2 Underground Sea
2 Tropical Island
1 Volcanic Island
1 Island
1 Forest
4 Misty Rainforest
1 Flooded Strand
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
1 Black Lotus
5 Moxen
Win (13)
4 Oath of Druids
1 Eternal Witness
1 Emrakul the Aeons Torn
1 Tidespout Tyrant
1 Time Vault
1 Voltaic Key
1 Tezzeret the Seeker
2 Jace the Mind Sculptor
1 Yawgmoth's Will
Protection (15)
4 Force of Will
3 Mana Drain
3 Thoughtseize
3 Spell Pierce
1 Nature's Claim
1 Echoing Truth
Broken stuff (7)
1 Time Walk
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Merchant Scroll
1 Brainstorm
1 Sensei's Divining Top
Sideboard
4 Nihil Spellbomb
2 Yixlid Jailer
1 Iona Shield of Emeria
1 Pyroclasm
1 Doom Blade
2 Red Elemental Blast
1 Hurkyl's Recall
2 Nature's Claim
1 Ancient Grudge
The decklist is probably far from optimal, but I found it hilarious that there are multiple ways to take infinite turns (Tidespout, infinite mana, Emrakul; Tidespout, Witness, Time Walk in the yard; Jace, Witness, Time Walk in the yard and 12 mana; Tidespout, infinite mana, Tezzeret or Jace). Now to the matches:
R1 vs what I assume was Golden Gun Oath
G1 - I lose the die roll. I play an early Thoughtseize, which gets Forced pitching Gifts. He plays an Oath but no Orchard and passes. I resolve a Jace and quickly find Vault and Key without showing him any of my Oath cards.
Sideboard: -4 Oath, -1 Mana Crypt, -1 Eternal Witness // +2 Nature's Claim, +2 Red Elemental Blast, +1 Iona, +1 Hurkyl's
G2 - I keep giving him Spirit tokens and a win condition. I Thoughtseize him at one point seeing only Dragon Breath and Mana Crypt. I run out planeswalkers to soak up some damage until I can find Yawg Will and assemble Vault/Key.
1-0 (2-0)
R2 vs Ed Carey with Red Shops
G1 - I lose the die roll. He mulls to six and leads with a sphere effect. I Force and Thoughtseize on my turn seeing Crucible, Strip, Wire and Workshop. I take the Crucible. He plays Wire and then Lodestone a few turns later which he rides to victory.
Sideboard: -3 Thoughtseize, -1 Tezzeret // +2 Nature's Claim, +1 Hurkyl's Recall, +1 Ancient Grudge
G2 - With both keep our seven. My Mana Crypt hits me five times before I stabilize. I Yawg Will to Nature's Claim my Crypt and setup an Oath with Tidespout on top and a mox in hand. I bounce his Smokestack, and he scoops to save time.
G3 - He keeps his seven that has lots of lock pieces but no threat, and I keep a six that has Hurkyl's and Claim. I draw Force for the turn and sit there letting him play the pieces. I Hurkyl's at his EOT to play a Jace on my turn. I use Jace to eventually find Vault/Key.
2-0 (4-1)
R3 vs Anthony with Dredge
G1 - I win the roll. I know he's on Dredge from seeing him play earlier and keep a seven of Vamp, Ancestral, Vault and four lands. He Unmasks me before I can win and kills me with lots of hasty Zombies.
Sideboard: +4 Nihil Spellbomb, +2 Yixlid Jailer, +1 Iona // -3 Thoughtseize, -1 Tidespout Tyrant, -1 Mana Crypt, -1 Nature's Claim, -1 Tezzeret
Games two and three can be summed up as SICK LIFE BRO. I was living in Christmas land pretty much.
G2 - He Powders, mulls and keeps a six. I mull to five and keep Will, Emrakul, Ancestral, Jailer and Mox Jet. I play Jet and pass. I top deck an Underground Sea and play Jailer. My next turn I Ancestral into Spellbomb. I slowly beat him to death with one and eventually a second Jailer which I tutored for. I see the white Leyline and side in a Nature's Claim.
G3 - He Powders once, mulls and keeps a six again. I mull to five again and keep Island, Misty, Orchard, Mox Ruby, Jailer. I draw a Spellbomb for the turn.
3-0 (6-2)
R4 vs Vito with Bomberman!
I got paired down and decide to scoop Vito in seeing no reason to try and dream crush him. We play a match so he can get some more playtesting in. I win in three, but I think we played a total of maybe 12 turns.
3-1
R5 vs Lloyd with Bob Control
ID 3-1-1
Top 8 vs Lloyd again
G1 - I lose the die roll. We both keep seven. I remember keeping a hand with Vault and Key, and I think I resolved Yawg Will too.
Sideboard: +2 Red Elemental Blast, +1 Iona, +1 Hurkyl's // -1 Nature's Claim, -1 Mana Crypt, -1 Tidespout, -1 Witness
G2 - He mulls to six and is never really in this one. I start fatesealing him, and his draws are terrible. I play Vault and Key, let him Claim it and then Yawg Will and win.
Top 4 vs Josh
Congrats to Josh on the win and to both Gans. Here is Josh's report:
http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=42116.0The only things I'd want to add from our match is that in game one after he made all those goblins I Oathed with Emrakul in hand. I hit Eternal Witness but didn't get Echoing Truth or Yawg Will in the yard. I return Time Walk instead and Oath again. Unfortunately Tidespout is the second to last card in my deck. Then in game two I went for Yawg Will with Force, blue card, REB in hand but no red mana. I knew his hand was EtW, CoV, REB and a card he just D Tutored for. I was hoping he got greedy and went for Yawg Will of his own, which would have also won the game. I didn't want to wait for a red source knowing that he has a better draw engine and that he was running Thoughtseize. If I waited longer, maybe I could've won the game.
