I know a lot of people here live along the eastern seaboard, particularly in the NYC and DC metro areas.  I would ask you all to please make sure that you have taken precautions for Irene's approach this weekend.  She is looking to be an extremely dangerous storm with a very large storm surge and is tracking right along the east coast as of the latest forecasts.  DO NOT take Irene lightly; pay attention to any evacuation orders and if one is issued, evacuate.  Coastal areas in particular can expect to see a lot of flooding, and it's possible that the NYC subway system could become inundated so don't rely on that for transport after the storm surge hits.  The Jersey Shore (sadly the geographical area and not the reality show) is at particular risk from Irene, as it is unaccustomed to hurricane strikes.

Make sure those of you in the storm area planning to wait it out have plenty of water and food and are prepared for things like hurricane-force winds battering the windows and prolonged power outages.  Be safe.

I'll add to this that I live right across the street from the East River in NYC. As much of a pain as it will be, if they tell me to leave, I'm going to leave. You should do the same if told to do so. Take this hurricane seriously.

+1.  The US got punched bad enough during storms like Katrina and Andrew, is that lesson enough?

I live in Nebraska, which isn't even the worst part of Tornado Alley.  Those things set down, you get maybe 5 - 15 minutes warning; if we could somehow get 2 - 4 days notice before a tornado hit, I'd like to think we'd be of the mindset to leave or at least prepare summarily well in advance.  Hurricanes are not to be fucked with.  If your area anticipates landfall, please please take precaution.

I reside in the extreme section.  Is anyone else extreme?

Kidding aside, I'm prepared for this:  extra food, extra water, non-electronic entertainment, candles, flashlights, booze, weed and, most importatnly my lovely wife.  We live on the 3rd floor of a solid brick building, tucked closely in between other brick buildings.  We are within a mile of the ocean, however.  My wife grew up in Mobile, AL, so she's seen many a hurricane.  She's a pro.

I'm extreme as well.

I'm spending the day moving all the outdoor furniture and getting any other potential projectiles out of the yard.  I'm pretty glad the hurricane's coming now, and not in 2 weeks when I'm at school and even closer to the ocean.

I have been planning a trip to Burlington, Vermont for some time now. I was hoping to travel on Sunday and get there sometime Sunday night. Would you guys suggest waiting it out until Monday or traveling tomorrow instead? Never dealt with this hurricane business.

If you drive on Sunday you'll be driving in the storm. Wait.
