It always amazes and puzzles me when cards that have been printed for eons make an impact in Vintage. Does anyone remember when people first played Root Maze in Vintage? Why Jund? Why now? Is it the meta? Or some one had the courage to play it?
Hmm...I say courage. I generally play R beats decks when I want to have fun. It is a semi linear strategy that just likes hating things. Now, I would only play the deck with 8x spirit guides, the fact that glackin didn't include something says something about the pilot. I suppose turn 1 isn't as important as it seems my head but I personally like the acceleration + late game random dudes. Hymn was interesting because at least against me was a complete and utter blowout.
He was only running 2 goyfs? I don't really agree with this.
I don't understand all of the 2 of creatures w/o green sunz zenith.
I wonder if consultation would be better than vamp.
4 Liliana seems a little excessive. It didn't get into play during our match, but I'm not sure how good it is when you are both discarding and your opponent casts a blue card to draw a bunch of cards. I supposed teamed up with heavy discard, you maintain advantage. I guess it could be like black jace.
I have considered running jund charm before. If you think about it the card has a lot of utility with respect for its mana cost. For 3 mana you get mass removal against dredge tokens and possibly fish decks. You get really annoying pump that doesn't go away which can easily trap people up because they wouldn't expect jund charm, and it removes a graveyard which is good against dredge and Yawgs will. By any stretch of the imagination it is not a bad card for BGR beats decks.
Its kind of like echoing truth with regards to utility. Not a good card perse, but when its good it's really good. I feel like Jund Charm is the same way.
3 Ancient grudge MD can be a beating for shops as well as TVK strategies. Ancient grudge was the bane of a few games all day against a few opponents. Joel actually blew me out with it when I did all this stuff having 0 cards in hand, had the one mana open for key and was like attempt to take another turn and hes like NAH brah you dead.
Why now though? Why not now?
Its actually a pretty interesting question and if people were not irrational, data was perfect, and I had more time, I could probably figure it out and tell you. My advice, ask Glackin he can probably tell you why he played the deck. You can infer that he was afraid of shops from the 3 md ancient grudges. He hates creatures due to 4 liliana, jund and edict. He needs advantage from Bobs, hymns and thoughtseize and sylvan. and the rest is just to the face cause why not.
I think glackin is one of those players that will play to play not play to win even though he plays to win when he plays to play if you follow. If you don't follow please see chapter 8 section 3 paragraph 2 sentence 4 for an explanation.
