18 Awesome people showed up to play (at least half from out of town) which is a fantastic second foray into building a Vintage scene!

There was a top 4 split for $80 each, but we played it out for the glory.  In the future, prizes will most likely go to top 8 if we get 18+ players, but will be dealt with later. Also, the Play/Draw into top 8 thing might be addressed. Many door prizes were donated by BC to make the experience super pleasant!

The field:
Oath Storm
Postalworker Stax
Bob Snapcaster Control
Dredge
Rug Delver (get there)
Mud Stax
Noble Fish
Rug Delver
Oath Storm
Bob Snapcaster Control
Dark Knight Sensei Rises
Mono-blue Delver
Elves!
Bob Snapcaster Control
Hypergenesis
Dark Depths
GushATog

Pics!

18 people show up! The great Steven Menendian isn't there (he thought it was Sunday) but even rumors of him showing up are enough to propel the scene.

Bob's vs Stax in pivotal 5th round. One of the bastard Bobs flip BSC for the pwn.

Adam bring pimpage to his Dredge deck with Alpha/Beta Scathe Zombie tokens.

BC's Rug Delver vs Stax.

Cody's got Hexmages for days! He discovered his buddies legacy POX deck was like 22 cards away from Vintage Dark Depths. I lent him Bobs, Yawg Will, VTutor and foil proxy Thoughseizes to make it happen.

EJ's Rug Delver vs Adam's Dredge. I think I see Grafdigger's Cage there...

I dunno what's happening here, but I think that's Manny, who's come out of retirement to play Vintage with us!

This was my gamestate for most of the day. I lost 3 games all day.  I got skills getting nut draws!

BC patiently waiting for Adam to punch him in the face.

People complain about having to play against Stax. Others complain about having their spells countered. Which side are you on?

That's Alex (I think) with the nerdiest t-shirt of the tourney!

Dr Tongue playing Sensei Sensei. He probably hasn't played vintage in 3 years (since Sacramento's scene stopped)

Turn 0 or 1 of extra turns. Oath Storm does not have a library, but DOES have a Memory's Journey (the shuffle 3 cards back in flashback thing) in hand. Tendrils in hand, win!

Dunno what's going on here, but a pic is a pic

Dark Depths vs Trygon Predator. I believe Cory activated his Dark Depts by actually pumping 30 mana into it over several turns.

Elves! For the record, if anyone wanted to borrow a Vintage Deck, I have several extras within 15 proxy (Bomberman, Oath, etc). Just let me know if you want to play a real deck!

Oath vs Zombies

Michael Oath's up an Ingot Chewer. Killing his Mox Pearl. Awkward.

Sensei's Future Sight apparently gets stopped by Grafdigger's Cage (look it up. Can't play spells from library).

Combo Elves finally get a match it can handle. Dark Depths!

I don't know why people complain about Stax. Whiners.

I mulliganed aggressivily today to get the busted nutz.

When Trading post showed up, it did everything, EVERYTHING that I thought it could do. I even used all 4 abilities in one game to make my losing position into a winning position. This includes making a Goat token to chump block a Lodestone Golem, Discarding a card to get me to 6 life (so I can use Ancient Tomb again), making another Goat token, sacking that token to get back a Metalworker so I can have non-Ancient Tomb mana, and sacrificing a Smokestack set to 2 to draw a card instead of sacrificing 2 permanents. Mostly I got busted opening hands (What do you side in against Misty Rainforest or Underground Sea? That's how quick the lockdown came some games...)

These were my average opening hands.

My turn 2, his turn 3. Smile

Would you keep this vs Dredge G3?

I mean come on, who does this vs Dredge?

To be fair, Michael also mulliganed to 4 despite siding in 2 lands and like 5 artifact hate cards against me (respect!)

My tourney Report:

Round 1: Peter from elsewhere playing ???. I win the die roll and chose to go first
Turn 1 Trinisphere resolves. He plays misty Rainforest.
Turn 2 Lodestone Golem resolves. he scoops. I side in 2 grafdigger's cage vs the Misty Rainforest matchup (side out 1 Chalice, 1 Mana Crypt)
Game 2: Peter plays Snow Covered Island, Llanowar Elves, go!
I play turn 1 Trinisphere. Then strip his forest and tangle wire. My hands were so awesome all day, I don't remember which god hands went with which games.

Round 2: Galan (rhymes with Ballin') from elsewhere playing ???
I win the die rol and go first and play Mishra's Factory, Sol Ring, Chalice for 1, Chalice for 0, go!
He plays and Underground Sea
I play either sphere of resistance, or crucible into stripmine or something really sick and he scoops. I'm not gonna lie, I drew really well all day. I side in 2 grafdigger's cage vs his underground sea, and side out 1 Chalice and 1 Mana Crypt
Game 2: He plays land mox timewalk, manacrypt into snapcaster mage timewalk, turn 3 beat with snapcaster mage, go!
I turn 1 Tangle Wire, follow up with Smokestack. Then sphere, then waste. I don't really remember. I had lots of time to take pics of the other games!

Round 3: Brandon from elsewhere playing ???
He goes first I believe and plays forest Noble Hierarch. Smile
He forced my first turn play, then wasted my land, then wasted another land, then somehow got out Vendilion Clique, who beat down for 4 each turn thanks to exalted, and I lose my first game.
Game 2 and 3: I don't really remember, but I just locked him out and beat down with Golems and smokestacks with tangle wires, and so forth. (game 3 I got the shitty stax lock of Trinisphere, Smokestack for 1, Crucible of Worlds, and 2 lands thing happening. Smile

Round 4: ID with Michael Lewis. I wasn't gonna dreamcrush him after he took all the time to come down here.
Round 5: ID with Matt Salts, a local.

Top 8: Jose playing Mud Stax
Game 1: He wins the die roll and plays turn 1 Black Lotus, Mishra's Workshop, Chalice for 0, Karn the Silver Golem. My only  0 drop was my own Chalice of the Void
I play some Mishra's Workshop, and something. then after getting beat down by karn (followed up by Lodestone Golem), I play 2nd Workshop (ripped expertly from the top of my deck) and play Duplicant on his karn. Gameplay ensues, and I take some hits from his Lodestone and eventally get Trading Post online.  At about 5 life, with only Ancient Tomb as non-shop mana, I was able to somehow stabilize, gain life, chump with goat, get new goat, sac goat for Metalwork, use Metalworker to play spells without using Ancient tomb, and take over the game from my losing position. Trading Post did everything I wanted it to, including sacrificing a Smokestack w/2 counters to draw a card. Goat Control.  I side out chalices and spheres and side in Null Rods and Juggernauts. Smile
Game 2: he plays something, I play Metalworker, he plays something else, I dump Loadstone Golem, Phyrexian Metamorph of Lodestone Golem into play. And probably something else.
He copies mine (so he has 2 lodestone golems), I play Juggernaut x2.
I win out in the end. (I think he drew moxen to my chalice for 0). Again, the broken hands I got all day are a blur.)

Top 4: Adam with Dredge
He plays Bazaar.
I play shop, mox Chalice for 1 (I think). or sphere. I dunno. Pics have that info
I won game 1, lost game 2 (keeping the double sphere, non-action no wasteland hand. Shame on me!). Won game 3 with busted nuts (mull into wasteland). Again, pics show more

Finals: Michael Lewis - Oath Storm
Game 1: I crush him. Don't remember the details
Game 2: He forces my first turn Null Rod, then tutors to complete Time Vault combo
Game 3: He mulls to 4. I drop double sphere of resistance, then topdeck land to play Lodestone Golem. GG sir!

Whoot!  I don't think I would change any part of maindeck, but would consider looking into the Dupe/Metamorph slots in SB.

Nice job Jeff! You try and get all these people to come out and then you don't let them play any spells. I'm starting to see a strategy there... Wink

I headed out myself a tad over an hour early but got boned in the funnel getting out of Sac briefly and paniced and called ahead early asking for 10-15min's if possible. No problem was the reply, sweet! I then proceeded to interpret Peabody as the exit/entrance off I-80 and later found it's East only ENTRANCE and had to ask 2 old timers (older than me anyways) on bikes on where Peabody was in relation to me and got kind Vacavillian directions and showed up 10-15 late as I thought. a few closer players were on the way and got a few extra minutes until the start (1:30ish).

Let the games begin.

Rd 1 Alex with Oath
2-0'd him on pretty much on the back of turn 1 Mox/Land/Bob and Force and opponent mulli's. Happens to everyone, just not all the time. Against my 3 opponent the mulli blues happened to me a game or 2 maybe. He did have quite a NErDy shirt but how can I speak in a green 311 shirt. Tokens and Bob beats is ok with me.

Rd 2 Michael L. with Oath (2nd place list)
Griselbrand winds up doing the job that didn't get done Rd1 in game 1. Force's/Misstep action/Fluster etc and then my Timetwister helps him a turn faster than I could win. On the losing end of a 2-0, or 0-2 if you're keeping score.

Rd 3 Frankie M (BobSnap Control) (3/4 list)
7 lands no mana, meh. 6 and no mana, wtf. 5 and a Sap and a Sensei top, that will have to do, it's workable if the Top gets me a land. not today sir as I find out. I get 2-0'd after I scoop the first game quickly (he has active Bob and Top shows me the stink).
Game 2 he has the Bob/Force/Misstep/Pierce? etc back-up. I underestimated not having Mental Misstep in my build or board. I think I kill myself with my own Necropotence (only at 5, possible Crypt flip damage, inbound Snaps or something). My sciatica is bothering me anyways and I need smokes so I stretch out with a jaunt to 7-11 for the second time that day. And also the second 0-2 reporting, ironic.

Rd 4 Brandon (Fish) T8 list
Game one Stony Silence shuts of all the pretty jewels and other shiny stuff. Tarmogoyf gives me 3 hits (thats all you ever need man) and 18 life becomes zero with the aide of Heirarch 5/6>6/7 attack!

Game 2 I pull off with Future Sight getting on the board late after getting early Bob and then the next best thing, double Bob. 1-1

Game 3 is another long haul and Sight see's light again although the grafdigger did have it on a short leash. There was an oversight with Snapcaster though and looking back on the turn or 2 before it gave me an extra Recall. I had been beating with bob/snap duo mostly before Sight popped on board. I finally get out from under Grafdigger/Stoney with Hurkyl and Chain of Vapor before showing Will  + uberbroken board state. I could have gotten the Rd win and a 2-1 in games but at 2-2 and 6 points it would take a miracle to get into T8, and this ain't no Grateful Dead show, so no miracles today most likely. He did have his shot at the sun though and made T8.

I scoop to him as I don't want a tarnished win either with 1 gamestate mistake. Was it the right thing to do? It's just cards in the end and not quite poker either so... My sciatica thanks me anyways and I pick up a pizza for the family on the way back. There are no losers here I think.

(Looking back it's quite possible the cage wasn't in play when the Snappy/Recall happened. He did have Stony Silence while my moxen/Probasco Vault sat idle and the Grafdigger came very late (but pre-Sight) which was mentioned and then it drew the Snapcasters target into question several turns after the fact at that point. I had Hurkyk's and a Force in hand quite awhile and fought the urge to pitch it knowing it would serve the better purpose once a bomb arrived and believe I used a Chain as well sometime that game.)

Unofficial 2-2 drop, heh or however you want to read it. 1-3 if you're keeping score at home. I'll bring more permission (and Oath hate) next time and probably face Shop all day. Thats how it goes sometimes.

great tournament and turnout! Had some great vintage games (and some not so great--> gm3 of finals!).
About the list, the sideboard had 1 volcanic island not 2. After playing the list, I would make a few changes. I expected a smaller tournament (last was 8 with 3 shops) so I played maindeck steel sabotage. Would probably switch out and find one more card to replace for 2 preordain, a bit more filtering would be nice. I was a little more focused in getting out a fast oath out and protecting grizzle (2 missteps main) and considered a lotus petal for a brief period of time.  The sideboard needs work, the cages were a bad choice but when I played against dredge I drew the ravenous trap  to slow his early dredge and then evoked an ingot chewer to take out the last 3 bridges. Grizzle started blocking the already established hoard of zombies until I timetwistered the graveyards and oathed up dear ol' blighty to help finish up. So switch 2 cages for 2 other graveyard hate.  The deck is interesting because I didn't actually need to storm off all day, despite being able to in a few situations, just letting grizzle beat em to death while protecting him and the gamestate. So the rituals were used to pay for an important spell pierce and to hard cast grizzle (awesome) today.

Thanks for the report and the pics. These 2 rounds summarize why I'm not playing blue at Gencon. In the blind I'm supposed to mull to force when I lose the die roll to stop this sort of stuff? (which still might not work given the bomb density) Seems really shaky. These games seem absolutely miserable for the non-shop player.

I've played various workshop decks at I dunno, 40 different tournies?  It is not always god hands all the time. Sometimes shop decks fall flat on its face, mulligan badly, lose die roll, face energy flux, null rod, etc. I was just running especially hot today. Or maybe my build was just that awesome! Smile

It was the Goat tokens. They are nigh unbeatable.  Wink
You had some damn perfect draws against me for sure. I might have been in it game 1, if you hadn't won the die roll or I had a Leyline though. I'm pretty sure that picture of your opener with my Bazaar in the background was Game 1, where you Wastelocked me.

I usually play Drains but decided to change it up for this one and play Dredge. I was going to do it last time, but BC talked me out of it at the last minute. Now my playset of Russian Bridge from Below was finished and I had 15 Alpha Scathe Zombies to use as tokens, so there was really no other option. It took a while to settle on the final list due to apprehension about removing the Dread Return package. With all the creature decks coming out of the woodwork these days, maindeck Leyline of the Void seemed solid. This also makes Unmask more viable (and I love me some Unmask). There was just enough room left to shove in a few Nature's Claims and Mental Missteps. I intended to do a 3/3 split, but decided to cut a Misstep to fit the 3rd Ichorid in the main. Originally I had 4x Chalice of the Void in the side, but after seeing that there was a bigger turnout than expected (and a couple of people who seemed to be on Shops), I swapped them for a 3rd Chewer and 3x Petrified Field. Playing Dredge turned out to be quite entertaining and produced many interesting, interactive games (there are always some huge blowouts, but this is Vintage after all).

My notes are mostly bad, non-existent, or illegible, but I'll throw out what I can remember/decipher.

Round 1 - EJ (RUG Delver)
2-1

Game 1, I open with Leyline and do the dredge thing. He gets some delver/abberation beats in, but can't stop the zombie hordes. Game 2, he gets a cage that I can't seem to deal with and I just draw blanks. Game 3, zombies continue to eat brains. I took a damage somewhere (City of Brass to kill a Cage? Delver?).

Round 2 - BC (RUG Delver)
2-0

Game 1, Zombies would have eaten brains if he hadn't scooped when he saw the writing on the wall. Game 2, I opened with Leyline and Zombies proceed to gorge themselves.

Round 3 - Mike (Oath)
1-2

Mike is a great guy and we have a good time despite the weirdness of this particular match.

Game 1, I open with Leyline. All is going well for the zombie hordes until Mike casts Timetwister after oathing up Griselbrand. The problem is that most of his library is supposed to be exiled from the Leyline, but midshuffling we realize what just happened and call a judge. Oops. Ruling gives him his cards back because it's impossible to restore gamestate. I scoop cause he's got Griselbrand, enough life, a full hand, and his library back.

Game 2, I misstep Ancestral after he mulls to 3, but then stumble along for a few turns until I can find a dredger to get the engine going. But I find one before he can do much and it's on to game 3.

Game 3, it's my turn to mull to 3. But I find the Bazaar and almost get there. At one point he Oathed up Chewer (killing his own mox since it was the only target), then evoked a second Chewer to exile my last 3 Bridges. I already had a sizable Zombie army and I get him down to 3 or 4 life, but by that point he has two Oaths out and out pops Griselbrand AND Blightsteel Colossus. It would have been my game without Grisel's lifelink. Damn lifelink! This one was really close and quite a good game despite my mull to 3.

Round 4 - Manny (Bob-Snappy Control)
2-1

Game 1, He gets turn 2 Blightsteel, but a couple of Narcomoebas save me for one turn until the Zombies come out of the woodwork. Game 2, I mull to 3 (after powdering at least 3 times!). He's got the hate (2x Cage, Jailer), so I'm just not even in this one. Game 3, He gets Cage (by misstepping my misstep), but I've got a City of Brass and Nature's Claim for it. He ends up front and center for the Zombie Apocalypse.

Round 5 - Frankie
ID

I'm in 5th and Frankie's in 6th in the standings, so we ID into Top 8.

Quarterfinals - Matt (RUG Delver)
2-0

This is my 3rd match against Matt ever (we were 1-1 going into this match). We first played at the SCG: Sacramento Legacy event, where we had a tense match in the last round playing for top 32 (Enchantress vs. Esper Stoneblade if anyone cares). Then he crushed me last time in the first Vintage 4 Cash event (Bob-Snappy vs. Bob-Snappy).

Game 1, I powder twice and end up mulling to 6. He comes out of the gates with the beats and gets me down to 6 before Zombies devour all in their path. I might have hd a Leyline. Game 2, I think I open with another Leyline. He's got 2 Crypts, but doesn't deploy them fast enough. I miss them with Therapy, but know to play around them. They slow me down (but also shrink his Goyfs). I eventually get a small army of Zombies, Bloodghasts, and Narcomoebas that push through his Snapcasters and Goyfs.

Semifinals - Jeff (Goat tokens!)
1-2

We joke around about how in this match the die roll is the early game, mulligans are the midgame, and turn 1-2 is the late game. Even though that is mostly an unfair stereotype of Vintage, it is definitely true in this particular match up. I manage to lose game 1 because he wins the die roll, then goes Turn 1 Chalice for 1, Turn 2 Crucible-->Wastelock. Then turn 3, he plays Smokestack, Trading Post to deal with the Narcomoeba and Bloodghast I managed to cough up before getting shut out. Boo!

Game 2, I open with Leyline and he gets two early spheres. However, actually casting spells is for chumps, with 3 Ichorids and 3 Bridges in the yard, the army of the undead is unstoppable. I think this was the game where he used Duplicant (and Metamorph of Duplicant) to remove 2 of my Bloodghasts.

Game 3, I have a weird hand that I ALMOST mulled because I had a bad feeling about it: Bazaar, Troll, Chewerx2, Claim, Powder, Bloodghast. It would have been perfect with City of Brass or Undiscovered Paradise (or if I'd have drawn one with the first (and only) Bazaar activation). I kept because, although this hand felt strange, mulling a hand with Bazaar felt stranger. He opens with Relic. I manage to get a dredge in, but he's got Wasteland, then Cage. If I had a single mana producing land before the Metalworker into Lodestone came down, I think I would have been okay. Oh well. I'm actually glad the goats went on to win it all. Goat tokens are the real deal in Vintage apparently.

Overall record was 4-2-1, not bad considering this is the first time I've actually played Dredge in a tournament.

I was pretty happy with my list overall. Maindeck Leyline was phenomenal all day (shutting off Snapcasters, protecting Bridges, would have been nice vs. Wastelock). I was initially skeptical of dropping the Dread Return package, but it actually seems mostly fine. The only thing I really miss from it is the additional sac outlets. Also, Grafdigger's Cage is about the least scary piece of hate to face as a Dredge pilot. I was able to play through it easily more often than not (though it did get me a few times, but that was usually in multiples of in conjunction with something else like spheres or Jailer).

Awesome tournament.  I was pleasantly shocked by the turnout.  The first tournament a couple months ago brought in 8 people, so this time I was hoping for something around 12.  But we got 18 brave souls.  I had a great time, and I hope everyone else did too.  Smmenen didn't end up making it to the tournament.  He was all:

I played RUG Delver.  I started with Soly's latest list, and made a few small changes:

-1 V. Clique
-1 Tarmogoyf
-1 Fetchland
-1 Steel Sabotage
-1 Flusterstorm

+1 Trygon Predator
+1 Fastbond
+1 Island
+1 Merchant Scroll
+1 Mental Misstep

I lost to Dredge because this build is pretty weak against Dredge.  Then I lost to Frankie because I always lose to Frankie.  I made top 8, but I had to take off or my wife would have been mad at me, so I scooped to somebody (probably Lotushead or luudes).  Looking forward to next time, probably September.

yeah man that timetwister screw up was pretty bad.  I didn't even for a second consider the ramifications of me shuffling because I had just drawn my one maindeck dredge hate. The leyline had absolutely no effect until then and I just completely missed it. I feel the responsibility for it and my karma evened out after I mulled to 3 game 2.  At least we had an awesome game 3!

It's all good. Game 3 was totally worth it.  Very Happy

I forgot to echo everyone else's sentiments that the tournament was awesome. Can't wait for the next one (and getting to duel all the opponents I missed this time)! I think I'm all dredged out for a while though; probably something else next time.

Fixed list. I play 4 factories, not 2. I put 1 of each season in MWS, and fixed it for posting, but not fixed it enough. Smile

My life isn't complete winning a Vintage tourney, until Tobi posts it to Morphling.de and it is etched in time forever. and my decklists are correct. Where is Tobi?

Also, Morphling.de is my go-to site for building gauntlets. Smile

Fixed both Sideboards. Jose's list has 59 cards. I figure it is Mana Vault most likely the 60th card.
