In this article, I explore what YMTC may mean for Eternal formats, attempt to resolve some tensions in designing cards for Eternal, suggest why design matters for Eternal, set out a framework for designing cards for Eternal, suggest three especially fruitful approaches to designing for Eternal, and apply those principles to possible card submissions for this YMTC process. While YMTC offers a ready context for these ideas, the design approaches and frameworks I explore are applicable far beyond this narrow, but exciting, process.

I try to also dispel the myths about designing for eternal... I hope you enjoy!

Good stuff Steve. I enjoy reading non-strategy articles every once in a while and really enjoyed this one. Like you, I hadn't put much trout into the designing of cards. You write about designing a card for eternal without making it too good in some of the more restricted formats, the bread and butter for Wizards, Standard and Modern, but is there a way to make a card playable in those formats and still playable in Vintage/Legacy? I can't recall if Crucible of Worlds was played in Standard when it debuted. From my limited understanding of the Standard format, I suppose that a Leyline of Mephistopheles would be playable. I'm not sure about some that you suggest removing cards from the stack would be any good in Standard or Modern; I don't think the formats currently have counter wars often enough to justify deck space. I know the sets have recently moved away from reprinting and designing super efficient counter magic. They won't reprint Counterspell!

I think there's at least one good existing example of this: Voice of Resurgence.  It's doing well in Standard, and while it's still too early to see if it can make a splash in Eternal, it's very possible there.

Great article!

I like "stack plunder" where you exile/counter your own spells to draw cards.  I like it so much, I sometimes play Arcane Denial to do just that.

It's definitely possible, but just more difficult

The approaches I canvass here are geared toward creating eternal playables that aren't over powered in other formats.

After seeing the YMTC finalists, I was really struck by how I wish people had thought about their cards in terms of the principles elucidated in this article....

We don't know that they didn't.  I was off carrying the torch for a similar design philosophy at MTGSalvation for days, hoping to influence some folks.  But regardless of what people submitted, WotC gets to make the call on what card effects might see print.  They'd be the ones to convince.

And your article came out a month too late to influence them. Sad
