On Saturday 27th July, 35 players made their way down to Next Level Games Dandeong for our annual  MASTERS event. We had more players than ever before even though we were missing a few of the old stalwarts and could have broken 40 given some more forgiving schedules. Even so MASTERS 2013 stands as out largest Vintage event ever held at Next Level Games. Bear in mind that this was also a sanctioned event so all the power was coming out to play. We have away multiple pieces of power, multiple Jaces and even had a prize for our highest placing unpowered player who only missed top 8 due to a loss in the final round of Swiss.

It was an awesome day and it really brought out some of the best eternal players in Australia. The Drain players especially came out in force. Grixis Control was the most played deck in the room and managed to put two decks into the top 8 but in the end it was a Grislebrand Oath Deck which was the eventual victor. Shops were severely underrepresented along with Bazaars and we will have to see whether this trend continues into the future. It should be noted that most lists had a significant amount of Artifact hate in the main decks so it most likely would have been severly hated out if Shops had shown up in numbers it is most likely they would not have fared well. It is also interesting to note that our top 4 (of the swiss) were knocked out even though they all elected to play as per the play/draw Rule.

Overall it was a great day and I hope to see everyone who made it down again and I hope that Vintage in Australia continues to grow as it has in the past year.

Once again, A huge thank you to everyone who made it out to the event. It was a great day and I hope to see you all at future Vintage events. The whole weekend was a blast and if you ever get the chance to come to one of our annual MASTERS weekends you really should come.

EDIT: I captured the top 8 and top 4 rounds on camera and have started to cut them. In the next half an hour both games of the top 8 Match between Isaac Egan (Grixis Control) vs Thomas Ribet "Tribet" (affinity) and two of the three top 4 games between Samuel Loy (Cagebreaker Dredge) vs Jeffery Chan (Burning Oath) should be up on youtube under "EternalMelbourne" http://www.youtube.com/user/EternalMelbourne?feature=watch. Game three will be up by tomorrow night

Note: our 2012 final is also on there but the editing is horrible.

Wow, what an awesome turn out for a Sanctioned event. This is truly awesome and I hope to see more representation of Sanctioned Vintage in the future showing these kind of numbers or better.

Awesome. I haven't seen a sanctioned Vintage event (outside of Europe) get this sort of representation in a long time. Well done!

In Australia we generally run 10 proxy events as a general rule. Tournaments like the Next Level Vintage series and the one off Librarypalooza tournament earlier this year are proxy events. However two stores in 2010 decided to create an Eternal Weekend highlighting Eternal in Australia and over a weekend held 3 tournaments (Vintage/Legacy/Australian Highlander). This was Eternal LEGENDS and was a one off event. However it was decided to make this an annual event. We have always kept it as a sanctioned Vintage event for a number of reasons:

It keeps Vintage on the map as far as the DCI and Wizards are concerned.
It provides our players reasons to pick up their power and to hold onto it.
It brings out the best players because they know that they are playing against the other players who are equally involved in the format.

We probably won't have another Sanctioned event untill next year at MASTERS but we will defiantly continue running this event as a Sanctioned event as we hope to make it bigger and better each year.

The editing of the video makes it look like a swift and brutal beating in these three minutes. which it was.
thanks for sharing.
