I have been trying to keep up with the t1 metagame, and was honestly quite lost for a while (9 months of Marine Corps training will do that I spose) and after coming back and having a talk/few matches with Smemmen and his multitude of decks, I got a good grasp of the Tier 1 decks in t1.

Obviously, especially after Mirrodin, pre any restrictions, Stacks/Mud is a current powerhouse, then of course there is ToG/Gro-Atog, and now Long's Desire, which is just as, if not more so, beautiful as Academy.  Lion's Eye Diamond is beautiful, they restrict it and all "I make more mana than what I cost" cards will be restricted, except for Tinder Wall (I'm just waiting for someone to break it).  Anyways, I regress, the reason I am making this article is to state that with Combo/Prison being the main competetive decks, that Mon-Black could easily be a very competitive deck in todays format.  Along with new cards in Mirrodin, mainly Chalice and Damping Matrix, it could even handle Keeper and Tog quite well.  And if the Crucible of the Worlds card is made as is, it may even cut a spot in, making Mono-Black have at least one disruption card every turn against 70% of the decks out there.

Anyways, here is the current decklist, and testing has shown it does quite well in the current metagame.  It does have trouble with MaskNought, and sligh obv.  Against the rest though, well, I need more testing before I can come up with %, anyone who would like to do this for me is welcome.  And without a further ado, the decklist:

Withered Wretch is really good against Tog, Welders, Survival, etc. Contagion in your sideboard would help against Sligh (as would a Chalic for 1). It just looks like with your low mana base that beyond a Chalice for zero, it'll never really be that good. You never wanna cast it for 3 and even two can be annoying. It's really only best when playing first it seems. Just me.

I'd venture to say that Chalice makes Null Rod pointless, or at least an often dead card. Null Rod might be better for you, but if you're having trouble with Sligh I'd say go with Chalice. It's easy to set at 1 on turn 1-2 and have an easier time against a lot of decks including Sligh.

Thx for the tips thus far.  With further testing I have come up with the idea that Chalice>>>>Null Rod, thus bumping up to 4, and to help keep the board control, and to make Chalice of the Void worthwhile after turn1-3, adding 3 powder Keg.  Also, no matter how much I hate to admit it, Hypnotic Spector is just not as powerful as it was, so I dropped 2, Adding one Cabal Therapy (testy).  Pls kp the tips rolling.

I'm not sure that only 10 creatures is the way to go.

Maybe you should think about dropping a keg or two and adding in the withered wretchs

or if like where it is, then trying out skittering skirges in place of the the two hippies.
