ToC round 1 report

I'm piloting ABM (#24 on the ToC decklist), David Kaplan is piloting Dkaps sligh (#54).  I win 2-1.

Summary of the games:

Game 1:  I mulligan down to 5 cards.  Not a good way to start the ToC.  I keep this hand because I have a mox sapphire and a mystical tutor.  I figure that worst case scenario, my opponent casts first turn mox monkey, but I'll still have time to both tutor for and cast ancestral.

Wouldn't you know it, Dave casts not only a first turn mox monkey, but also a mox ruby.  The monkey eats my mox.  In response, I tutor for ancestral anyway, hoping to draw into a blue source soon.  So not only did I mull down to 5, now I'm mana screwed.

From here, I topdeck like a savage mizer and win the game.

Just kidding.

I don't draw into any mana source, and the game is soon over.  I don't have the logs for this game, since I lost and "mull to 5, mana screw, lose" is not very interesting.

Game 2: A nice, long game.  I have a pretty solid opening hand, and Highlights include a first-turn ancestral, soon followed by a scroll rack and a balance, clearing his side of the early beats.  Gorilla shaman makes an appearance post-balance, and does some annoying munching, and does so for quite some time (it eventually even killed my scroll rack).  I ignore the shaman for now, and go with regrowing my ancestral and casting mind twist.  The card advantage here leads to an stp for shaman, another scroll rack, and I scroll rack into fof.  Fof does its massive digging job combined with the scroll rack, and I soon get a land tax.  Tax-rack means game, as I soon find a tutor to get yawgwill, and it's one of the more borken yawgwills I've cast.  Most importantly, the yawgwill gives me the zuran orb back, which was destroyed by a shaman earlier.  Dave concedes soon thereafter.

Game 3: I keep a not-bad hand.  Dave apparently doesn't have too much in terms of early beats beyond a shaman, and throws a lot of burn my way.  I kill his shaman pretty early (to protect a sol ring), and cast fact or fiction, getting some good stuff.  The fof, combined with gemstone mines expiring, gives me threshold, and I cast a mystic enforcer with the mana from the gemstone mines.  The enforcer goes all the way, with me holding a stp and a misdirection for backup.

I wonder what a judge would rule?  AFAIK, both effects go on the stack.  After that though, Dave is making a bold assumption - basically he's saying that if NaChlv doesnt explictly stack the effects then they get stacked in the most disadvantageous order.  Considering that they had played relatively loosely up until that time (notice how tight the announcing and playing gets for a couple turns afterwards) I didnt think it was unclear what NaChlv was doing there.

If I were judging I would tell NaChlv to be clearer in the future and hand Dave a small slice of Cheddar so he doesn't go away empty-handed.    But then, I am not a judge, so thats just my totally unproffessional opinion.

Any real judges want to take a swing at this?

He's perfectly within his rights, technically, he's right, but usually, games on apprentice are played in a more friendly manner.  Like people don't usually hit all the phases of their turn.  Technically, they should, but it's not usually a big deal to anyone.

That really gets me some times.  And no, I'm not talking about "getting rules cheesed".  I'm talking about when someone says something along the lines of: "fine, if you want to be that way about it".  This may be a game, but what do you do in a game? You play by the rules[/b].  When someone calls you on the rules, they have every right to.  This usually isn't a problem in my area(I hold people to mistakes, this helps them LEARN to not make them again).  I may sound like a dick, but it REALLY pisses me off when people say things like that.  I try to play pretty strictly, and in a tournament, I expect the same of my opponents.  it makes the game easier to keep track of and helps prevent confusion.

Sorry this is so off topic, but regardless: If your opponent holds you to something you did wrong(Even if you didn't know it was wrong) PLEASE don't make them out to be the bad guy.  Learn from it, benefit from it, get better because of it.

Ok, I'm ruling with Fishhead on this one.  Here's my take.

Both land tax and powder keg need to go on the stack at the beginning of upkeep, regardless of whether tax will be used or a counter added to keg.  NaClhv needs to choose the order they go on the stack.  He failed to stack them and proceded to resolving them in the order of his choice.  In a loose game, you can just let that go.  If the opponent wants to play tight or if he has some tricky instant effect to play that depends on precise timing, he needs to tell NaClhv to back up and stack the effects properly as soon as NaClhv starts to resolve anything.  Dave wants to assume that because NaClhv added a counter to the keg without stacking anything, he must have stacked land tax above the keg effect and let it resolve before, whereupon he declined to tax.  That assumption doesn't fly.  If you give Dave his way on this one, he could just as easily claim that a counter couldn't be added if NaClhv taxed first.  If there were an echo or an upkeep cost involved, he could declare it not payed as soon as the keg counter was added.  Basically he allows NaClhv to make a procedural error so that he can assume NaClhv's intentions and turn it to his advantage.  The correct way to deal with a procedural error is to correct is as soon as it's recognized unless a significant action has happened since then.  A significant action would be something like drawing a card that would give NaClhv a hint at how he should play his upkeep effects.  If he draws a card, then by all means, he shouldn't get to go back and tax (or add a counter to a keg or pay an upkeep or perform any other optional upkeep action).  Since he didn't (and no other significant action occured), he simply needs to remove that fuse counter, stack his effects properly, and go from there.

So, if I'm judging and I'm called into the middle of this, I simply back the action up to the beginning of the upkeep.  NaClhv gets a caution to play more carefully.  At a PT or GP, he might get a warning.  I wouldn't give Dave a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct, but i'd probably tell him to watch his step.  I don't mind new players calling a judge over for stupid stuff or players who are actually confused on rules, but i don't have a lot of patience for good players who rules-lawyer (at least when they don't have a case).  Calling a judge on something like that would pretty much spend my patience with a player for that tourney.

Looks to me like the Powder Keg and Land Tax on the stack issue was less about following the rules, and more about how informally the players were going to announce their phases and effects.  NaClhv never announced he was adding the "counter to the Keg" effect to the upkeep stack, either, so if Dave was claiming that you must announce every upkeep effect being added to the stack, then they should have backed up to the beginning of the upkeep and had NaClhv declare his upkeep stacking.  Frankly though, playing Magic on Apprentice strictly to the rules of step declaration can become VERY tedious, and I don't see the point in doing this all the time unless you're trying to rules lawyer someone.  I mean, it's clear that NaClhv wanted to both add a counter to the Keg and use Land Tax during his upkeep, and there was nothing tricky required to accomplish this.

Basically, if something needs clarifying, a player wasn't given a chance to respond, etc., because of informal play, then players should back up the game to that point.  Otherwise, informal play over Apprentice is fine and insisting on nitpicky details where no confusion, etc. exists is just silly.

Good to hear you say that.     It's tough to keep your cool when you're frustrated and we've all been jerks at times like that.  Even in RL with a huge prize on the line, though, that kind of gambit won't fly if the judge knows what's what.
After thinking about it a while, I remembered a PT top-8 where a nearly exactly analogous situation came up.  It involved a masticore.  Its controller (player A) wanted to ping a few times during his upkeep before letting the core die.  So A tapped a bunch of mana, pinged some guys, and dropped the core in the gy.  His opponent (player B) claimed that since he didn't stack the core's upkeep and went straight to casting other effects, that he had therefore chosen to bury the core.  The judge who was watching (presumably a lvl 4) the whole episode rejected player B's rules lawyering and just made player A go back and stack it all by the book.

The Masticore situation is completely different because you must stack it, you do not however, have to stack either Keg or Tax, so if you only choose 1 and it resolves, that means no others were chosen.

Perhaps Dave has some insight on these games?  

In the third one he seemed to draw no creatures except Shaman; he did burn NaChlv down to 10 but wasnt able to follow up before the Enforcer finished him.  Thats not exactly lucky; but one thing about that Enforcer is that it gives you a very finite amount of time to find a solution.  And, as NaChlv shows, he wasnt even close to being out of gas at the end.

The second game, though, Dave seemed to have a lot of play.  NaChlv just got a good start and then managed to get that Scroll Rack digging for answers.  Was this game more typical of the matchup?

Rules refresher for everyone:

Both powder keg and land tax use the words "at the beginning of your upkeep" and the word "may"

In this scenario, let's be very clear about what happens. Both of the abilities always trigger. They trigger before either player has priority, and the trigger itself is not optional. The controller decides what order they trigger in.

The active player gets priority with both triggers on the stack, and can play fast effects or pass priority. Assuming both players pass (as above) the player then chooses for the top trigger whether or not to perform the action, then likewise for the bottom trigger (after both players pass again).

So in the above, NalClhv made the mistake of not explicity announcing the order in which he stacked the two triggers. The most this could ever get him is a caution/warning (warning unlikely) for procedural error-minor. He also did not explicitly say that he was resolving the tax trigger and choosing not to perform the action, hence if called over I would rule that the tax trigger was still on the stack as this is the clear intent of the player and he did nothing to mislead the opponent with regards to it. So he would be able to do the keg and the tax, and he would get a caution to play more carefully (except at very high REL where I wouldn't be ruling, but the worst that would happen would be a warning). At higher REL's, Dave would likely have just called a judge to clarify this, so nothing would happen to him. If he did not, and tried to tell NalClhv that he could not tax, or summarily rule this way, he could conceivably get an unsportsmanlike conduct caution/warning, although this is also unlikely.

NalClhv should have been more precise about his intent but did nothing explicitly wrong and should have been able to tax. Dave has every right to question rules interactions, but in this case his interpretation was wrong, and at his own admission, a little petty and based on the disappointing game state.

Know the rules, kids, they are the basis for the game and you should expect correct play in a tournament.
