A lot of the regular berekely players failed to show at all, or failed to show up on time to be part of the tourney. Additionally, the tourney was only 4 rounds due to an earlier event delaying things. This made for a generally small tourney.

The matchups in this tourney didnt go as expected at all. A keeper deck I never got to play against went all the way for the 1st place victory. I was playing pandeburst without a sideboard- I lost an early matchup against sligh to end up finishing 6th- tied for second in points with a ton of other people.  A beautiful mind was there (played by tim), but nachiv didnt show up until later for some casual play. I wanted to play against the academy deck but it never happened.

Here is a quick summary of the weirdness.

Match one vs blue trix.
Considering that he was playing mono-blue with counters I figured that I would have a really rough time in the first game and be thrashed after he boards.

Round 1
He wastes an early strip on a multiland and I play bazaar and begin drawing cards like crazy. He intuitions for illusions without the mana to cast it, and I duress him. He casts a ton of cantrips but doesnt draw his combo or anything to stop me from going off.

Round 2
He boards in some secret tech and I brace for the early b2b punishment.... but it never arrives. Squee and bazaar and frantic search go a long way towards the victory. I think he cast a morphling late during this game but I dont think it got to attack. Random.

Match 2 vs unpowered sligh
Should really be "me vs my lack of ability at magic" but I digress. Next time I will mulligan more aggressively for a bazaar.

Round 1
I take an ok hand with 3 cities in it, not realizing I'm paired with sligh. He draws 3 goblin grenades and lots of burn. He gets me down to about 3 life with help from my stupid cities. I nearly go off, but my cities go all the way. Argh, betrayed!

Round 2
I take another ok hand with no bazaar in it (mistake) and manage to somehow not draw any white mana. Or any other type for that matter. With 2 mana on the table I get my head nearly beaten in. I manage a last minute balance but he topdecks a bolt. Bleah.

Match 3 vs nether void:
Round 1
I duress him early on and see he has an opening hand of beats but no void. I topdeck into pernicious deed and lay it down early. I also draw into balanace and the other deed. This puts a severe dent in his ability to race me and replenish finally goes all the way.

Round 2
He does some boarding. His opening is very strong, with first turn hyppie, second turn void and mishras. I do a lot of digging with my first turn bazaar, but the hyppie and the mishras manage to kill me just as I get to 7 mana for replenish on turn 4.

Round 3
He does some more boarding. I get off to an ok start with a first turn bazaar for the combo. He lays a lot of beats and almost manages to go all the way, but I replenish just in time.

Match 4 vs ABM:
Meddling mage, b2b and fow are all strong against my deck. I was also playing against tim who regularly beats me in the ABM vs pandeburst matchup. I expected my best hope was to squeak through on round 1 and probably die badly in rounds 2 and 3.

Round 1
We both start out strong. I play a first turn bazaar and mox, drawing 2 cards and dumping the combo. Tim lays down a first turn meddling mage naming my favorite card (replenish). The next two turns go mostly uneventfully, with me bazaaring a lot and laying two more lands and Tim casting anscestral on the end of my turn. On my next turn I use bazaar, lay some moxen, time walk, frantic search, bazaar again and balance with two cards in hand and no creatures. This removes the mage and empties tim's hand, killing one of my lands. On my time walk turn I bazaar into a mox and a land and cast replenish.

Round 2
Tim boards up to 4 mages and 4 b2b and after the game I learn he also boarded in tormod's crypt as well. I start off with the usual "play bazaar, dump the combo + squee", he answers with first turn mage naming... not replenish but red elemental blast. Over the next 3 turns me manages to lay down two b2b (my lands arent tapped yet fortunately) and another meddling mage naming pernicoius deed. I play another bazaar and use it like a frantic search (ie once) but only manage to dig to 3 mana, leaving me one short of a replenish.

Tim has won at this point and we both know it, but Tim is going for the "fancy win"- he casts demonic tutor but does not cast anything. After nearly conceding I decide to draw a card anyway. I topdeck a land and cast replenish as a last pathetic gesture of resistance. However, tim does not actually counter it. Because he doesnt have any counters in hand. Doh.

Afterwards
So I go 3-1-0. Anyway, afterwards I got to play some casual games. Pandeburst is stronger against keeper than the aptly named "sleevy dragon", but dragon bends pandeburst over very badly. I went 0-3 vs dragon in a series of 30 second games. I will probably board for this matchup next week
