Ahhhhhhhhh lovely New Hampshire.  After traveling through the shit hole that Vermont is, we(kl0wn, Leviat, my friend Rob and myself) arrive in New Hampshire.  We are greeted with low humidity and high temperatures.  Good times.  We get VERY lost trying to find Steve's(Zherbus's) parents house.  By a stroke of blind luck we end up at a gas station RIGHT as Steve's brother and friend pull in  .  Since we know it's them, and they don't know it's us, Bryce(kl0wn) leans out the window, snaps a few pictures when they look towards us(while we have that song Limp Bizkit did for Mission:Impossible blaring), then as they pull out we zoom after them.

So after a thrilling "chase", we end up at Steve's house.  We get inside, greet each other, and then play some Magic.  Eventually Steve's brother and his friend go out to get us all food and apparently they get held up because it takes like, 3 weeks for them to get back.  In the mean time we're playing magic after not having eaten for like, 14 hours, so we have NO clue what we're doing, and Steve's about to go nuts Razz.  Just as we're all about to start eating our legs, the food arrives Very Happy.  So we eat and play more Magic.

-Cut to Sunday-
I wake up feeling fine and dandy.  3 hours later, let's just say, I felt... like shit.  So I thought I wouldn't be able to make it through the day.  On the way to the card shop, I REALLY have to make a bathroom stop, and luckily we happen upon a diner which was actually closed, but the shop owner just happened to be inside.  Mise!  So then we go out for lunch(after I stock up on and consume massive quantites of drugs) and realize we are late and the crew gets some BK while I just kinda chill.

So we get to the tourney with about 20 minutes to spare, hang out, they eat, I feel sick, and then we begin.

Round 1: Matt playing G/W/B Feat. Deeds, Calls, Regenerators, Discard, Land-D etc.

Game 1: Matt gets out a fast Spectral Lynx backed up by a Deed.  I get out a Library before this and get to look at a few cards before he blows it up with some of my Moxes.  He casts a River Boa after that, which I Plow.  I then Cunning Wish for another Plow(after he has another Deed out) and I plow the Lynx, but he drops another.  I cast Yagwmoth's Will to take out the Lynx, get back my Moxes, draw some cards, play my Sylvan and then Time Walk.  I do this to bait him into using the Deed, which he does.  I untap then drop Morphling with some counters to back it up.  He in the mean time had dropped me to 2 with random creature beats.  He gets out a Call before this, and then after my Morph a boa, but Morphling is just barely able to outrace it(I finish the game at 2) by topdecking Demonic Tutor to get Time Walk to finish him before the Boa got me.  I would have lost this game if not for during my Will saccing some lands to my Zuran Orb to gain life to give me a bit of a buffer.

I board in a Plow and Edict taking out Sylvan and Fire/Ice(I think).
Game 2: I play Suicide Morphling with some Forces to back it up in case of Balance.  I combo him out with Time Walk, Regrowth, DT for Will, Will, Time Walk after bashing him once already.

Round 2: Chris playing B/R Funker/Discard/Land-D and some Bolts/Incinerates/Chains

Game 1: He gets out a turn 2 Juggernaut, and turn 3 Su-Chi.  When he attacks, I Plow.  He gets in a hit with the Su-Chi and drops another.  I Cunning Wish for Shattering Pulse and decimate his board, dealing 8 to him in the process.  All the while, he's throwing random burn at me, getting me to low single digits.  I eventually drop Morphling and do what Keeper does best, and ride it to win the game.

I side in the Shattering Pulse and Swords to Plowshares for Fire/Ice and something else(sorry, I was REALLY sick and i'm exhausted right now).

Game 2: He starts thowing some burn at me, but is only able to get me to 12.  He drops some Su-Chi, but I have drawn my Shattering Pulse and use it to Fireblast him a few times.  He's low enough that a few shots of Morphling Lovin kills him with the aid of Time Walk.

At this point i'm feeling REALLY sick, so I take some more drugs and drudge on.

Round 3: Bryce playing rOSE
We talk a bit about just drawing this round so we can get a bit of rest, but end up deciding to just play.
Game 1: He starts beating me up with Factories a bit(i'm able to kill them however).  He doesn't have any other action however, and my hand is, for a few turns, Force of Will X4, Yawgmoth's Will, Morphling, and X.  X is normally a pretty good card, so once I stop drawing land, I have to get creative and I leave myself with Swords in my hand for a little while to stave off the vicious Mishra.  We get into a counter war over something stupid(his Morphling probably) which I let him win because I don't feel like pitching my Morph to Force.  I am "Forced"(Get it?) to use it a few moments later however to stop his Ancestral.  I am unsure as to what I did next.  I think I Balanced, or Yawgwilled for some stuff. I'm sure I end up with Morphling on the board.  He however, has Chainer's Edict ready and without drawing Balance or Regrowth, he is able to take the game with another Morphling.

I side out Mystical, Vamp, Zuran Orb, The Abyss, Swords, and Dismantling Blow for 3x Red Blast, 2x Miner, and 1x Scrying Glass.

Game 2: I keep a really weak hand with a Red Blast and Library.  He has the Waste for my Library, so my hand gets ALOT worse.  I draw a Mana Drain, then land/artifact mana, for the next 8 turns I believe.  Somewhere in here he resolves Scrying Glass and just goes nuts on me.  I really stood no chance and I end up losing to drawing so little so early on while he's able to draw 2 a turn most of the time.  I do however get to Red Elemental Blast his Morphling after he taps out to Time Walk to kill me.  I was quite proud until he untapped and dropped another.

Bryce, your Kung Fu was quite mighty this match.

Round 4: Steve AKA Zherbus playing Keeper(1 card differance, Geyser where I have Cunning Wish).

Considering exactly HOW MUCH happens during a control mirror, i'll just kinda shorten this.

Steve resolves Sylvan both games.

Razz.  I mean, he does other stuff of course, but this was really key.  I have really been underestimating Sylvan lately, ususally tutoring for Ancestral before Sylvan with Vamp, but I may need to rethink that.  So, Steve schools me game 1, then mana burns to death game 2 off Mana Drain mana because he was just wanted to get me to 1 then concede.  We didn't really have time for a third game, so Steve let me go on which I must thank him for now.

Thanks

(I <3 writing late at night).  I'll have to get a rematch someday soon Smile

Sooooooooooooooooo I'm in the Top 4(after a bit of confusion where the computer INSISTED on having Rob in the Top 4, even though he was 2-2 and others were 3-1 that weren't in lol.)
The top 4 was:
Me - Keeper
Bryce - rOSE
Steve(The shop owner, not Zherbus) - Mono Black Land-D/Haunting Echoes
Josh - ???

Semifinals Vs Bryce playing rOSE - Joy of Joys, I play the deck that defeated me in the swiss Razz(Don't worry fans, all turns out well... for me anyways:()
Game 1: I mana screw Bryce, drop a pretty quick Morph and win
Sideboarding is the same as before
Game 2: I mana screw Bryce, drop a pretty quick Morph and win(I'm not even kidding).

Really rotten luck, I know I apologized for it earlier, but still, sorry about it Sad.

Finals vs Steve playing Mono Black Land-D/Haunting Echoes
Interesting deck, but he lacked Duress and Hymn which really hurt him alot.

Game 1: I take some City damage while he attacks my lands with the whopping 2 land-d spells he draws.  He does get in a hit or 2 with Shade, but i'm able to dispatch it.  He gets out a Chimeric Idol, then another which I mana Drain.  I drop a Mox Monkey and kill a Scroll I think with the mana.(I may have Stroked, and in fact, I think that's what I may have done).  Regardless, I drop Monkey somewhere and during his upkeep, attempt to smash his Chimeric Idol.  He doesn't turn it into a creature in response(probably because he didn't know about the non-creature restriction, which in his defence, many people don't know about).  I had just planned to make him tap out for a turn, but with the idol gone, I get some breathing room.  He gets out a scroll and starts hitting me.  He gets me to where I need to start sacrificing lands to stay alive.  HOWEVER, I still have monkey on the board.  It takes me until he tries to kill it to realize that i could just have killed the damn Scroll, rather than sac some lands.  I also chew up a Sol Ring while i'm at it.  I draw Morphling very soon after and he is unable to deal with it.  During this game, I had Cunning Wished for Teferi's Response, to try to ward him off from destroying my lands, but he Wastelanded anyways, and after i Regrew it, he did it again.  The extra cards helped me find my Morphling to kill him.

Sideboarding: I take out Zuran Orb for Teferi's Response, because I really can't think of anything else to take out(He had artifact creatures and some normal ones, so Abyss was still good, as were my spot removal.  Fire/Ice could have come out possibly).

At this point, i'm running on empty.  If I don't win this game, I'm quite sure I won't make it through another.

Game 2: He starts off VERY slowly, killing an Underground Sea, then doing nothing for a while.  While he is doing nothing, I bust up my Lotus to bring Morphling to liven up the party.  I dont' do much more than bring Morph over 4 times to win.

So hooray for me.  Jason takes a picture of me with Bryce in the background flicking me off Razz.  Some derogatory comments are made in regards to how shitty Vermont is, and we bounce off to eat while Steve returns home to Jes.  So we all eat at this meat joint and chat for a while before leaving for home.

/rant Vermont is Garbage.  Never, EVER, under any circumstances, VISIT VERMONT.  It's easily the crappiest state in the Union and should be bulldozed to make parking lots. /endrant

On the way home, we devise ways of using Magic to kill Vermont.  We end up with Living Plane, Unnatural Selection, then the kill card of choice.  We got a nice laugh from Fireball, Flashfires(If we can make them Plains), Stone Rain and my favorite, Obliterate.  Ahhhhhh, Obliterating Vermont.

Vermont is shit.

Annnnnnnnnnnyways, I had a great time and am looking foward to hanging out with Steve again(thanks alot for the hospitality).  We all had a great time and feel the 10 hour total drive was worth it.

Carl

PS.  Any Vermontian ManaDrainers: I am sorry for shitting on your state like that, but I really hate it :\\n\n

Its amazing what hunger actually does to you! With Nether Void, I think I only took something homo-ish like 3/8 games against keeper, then after eating an entire Calzone - like exactly reversed. I dont even want to talk about some of the other games I played pre-food. Was it Rob who said, "Hunger is funny; Its so funny to see two good type 1 players play like shit."

Yeah I had the game LOCKED the fuck down. I am with a full had, FILLED with counters. I have 2!!! Dwarven Miners in play,  Phling, a Sylvan, 15 mana worth of lands/artifacts, and you have a sol ring and a jet. No land...nothing.

I am just like ok, I want to get him to one so I can concede (making top4 would have been pointless to my guests seeing how I just concede anyways because I wont win my own prize...I just like playing. I didnt tell him this because I didnt want his play to be relaxed and messy) and he mindtwists for 2, and I just counter it because I am not caring. Then Hes at 8 staring down 7 damage. I forget about the drain and my plans to get him to 1 are ripped away from me!!! I conceded anyways.

In all fairness, we decided last night, that out side of mana screw...Sylvan Learning Center has been the deciding card in the mirror from the 700 hours of mirror matches we played the other night. I got shit draws last night, and he got them in the tournament. Wink Carl and I are of the same skill and our decks vary by ONE card.

Oh and your welcome, and we WILL meet again.

I'll get you next time Gadget, NEXT TIME!!!!

On Vermont...they have good cheese and other dairy...other than that, they are a NH wannabe! Yeah Im calling you out Wakefield.

I want to take another moment to mention some of my ultimatly BAD ASS post-board games during the tournament.

1. Burn - COP: Red out, hand full or BeB's, and misc counters.

2. Sligh - Abyss out, COP: Red out, Zuran Orb out (with like 8 lands in play) (I had also Mind Twisted him, and Kegged once)

3. Suicide - Compost out, COP: Black out, Abyss out. (Mind Twisted HIM,  and misdirected a sinkhole) I concede to him because I'd feel bad for kicking a kid from the t4.

4. Keeper Mirror - 2 Dwarven Miners, Sylvan Library, Lots of land, a Phling, and a full hand to his Sol ring and Jet. I concede because this tournament its pointless for me to be in the T4.

Note: Two REALLY good players got knocked from the T4. Pat with Stacker2, and Jason with academy. Tie Breakers as ass. I'm sorry guys!!!

Ahhh... What an exciting adventure New Hampshire was. Allow me a few minutes to explain things from my side and post a few pictures; Saturday morning starts out around 7:00 am for me. I only got five, maybe six hours of sleep so I'm really tired. The phone rings a few minutes after I get up so I sleepily answer the phone. It's Bryce (aka kl0wn).

Quote
Quote B: "Hey man, uhhhh did I wake you?"
J: "No, I just got up a few minutes ago."
B: "Oh, OK, good. Well, there's been a complication."
J: "Oh? What?"
B: "Smack can't drive me so I need a ride."
J: "Why can't Smack drive you?"
B: "He got hit by a bus."
J: "What?! Oh my god! Is he okay."
B: "Hahahaha, I'm just kidding man, his car broke down."

Seven o' clock in the frickin' morning is way too damn early to be playing jokes on people. Anyways, I go pick up the crew. Stop by Smack's so Bryce and get his funk (picture) and Carl, Bryce, Rob, and I set out on our journey.

After a little driving Rob needs to use the can so we take a quick stop in some loser NY town. (picture). After this we spend what seems like a lifetime driving through Vermont. Umm... Vermont sucks. REALLY BAD. Pave your damn highways. The only good part of Vermont was a lone sign that said "Free wood in back." Yeah, like Carl said. Vermont sucks.

Okay, so after this we're in New Hamsphire looking for Steve's place. As chance would have it we end up at the same gas station as a few of his friends. We decide to wait it out and stalk them (picture) along with some other weird locals (picture).

Upon arrival, the M:TG starts and both Carl and Steve go to work on each other (picture). As time moves on and we start to starve to death, things get really wicked and Carl pulls out the Noble Panther (picture). BTW, If anyone knows where I can get sweet deck holders like Carl's glowing Oh! My Goddess box, please let me know .

*Now, for those of you wondering just how crazy kl0wn is... I have a picture.*
(I didn't MAKE you click on that link )

Alright, now on to the tournament. I was playing what I call "Risky Academy" because I play with only two forces, and use Glacial Chasm, Trade Routes, and Fastbond.

Risky Academy

Mana
4 Gemstone Mine
4 City of Brass
3 Underground Sea
1 Tolarian Academy
1 Black Lotus
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Jet
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Diamond
1 Lotus Petal
1 Mana Crypt
1 Mana Vault
1 Grim Monolith
1 Sol Ring

Drawing
3 Impulse
3 Meditate
1 Ancestral Recall
1 Windfall
1 Wheel of Fortune
1 Frantic Search
1 Timetwister
1 Time Spiral
1 Memory Jar
1 Braingeyser
1 Stroke of Genius

Utility
2 Force of Will
4 Helm of Awakening
1 Crop Rotation
1 Trade Routes
1 Glacial Chasm
1 Time Walk
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Mystical Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Regrowth
1 Mind Over Matter
2 Abeyance
1 Tinker
1 Fastbond
1 Capsize
1 Candelabra of Townos

Sideboard
2 Force of Will
2 Jester's Cap
4 Masticores
4 Red Elemental Blasts
1 Balance
1 Yawgmoth's Will
1 Mind Twist

Round 1 (Bob playing a Mono-R Burn/Aggro deck)

Game 1
I get an okay hand with a couple lands, a Mox, a Vault, and a Twister. Bob plays a Strip, then a Waste, and then burns me down with a few Bolts and Grim Lavamancer. I try to get enough mana to eventually twist. I draw some junk, so I meditate, play chasm, and let him take two turns. He looks at the chasm and then just draws two cards. On my turn I draw a Wheel, I play, then drop Academy and go off. (This is Bob's first time against Academy and he starts to grumble about how boring it is.)

SB: < Helm, < Impulse; > 2x Masticore.

Game 2
I start off slow with a bunch of mana and and a Helm. Bob bolts me a couple times, plays a Troll, and then a drake of some sort. The game is pretty boring for Bob, he does a few damage, and I eventually go off with a Time Spiral and Academy on the board. (Bob doesn't like Academy, it's a boring deck that takes too long to kill.)

Round 2 (Steve (not Zherbus) with a Mono-B Land Destruction)

Game 1 (Steve wins roll but let's me play first)
I get a draw with lots of mana and an impulse. I decide I'll keep because I figure I just need one good draw seven to go off. On my first turn I play a Gemstone Mine, Mox, Crypt and Vault. On Steve's first turn he plays a Swamp, Lotus, Ritual, Sinkhole (I respond with a tutor for Ancestral), and Hippie. On my next turn a draw the Ancestral, play it and then drop a land. Steve drops a wasteland and attack with the hippie. I get mana screwed and steve gets a second hippie, I eventually scoop.

SB: < Helm, < 2x Impulse; > Balance, > 2x FoW

Game 2
I draw a bunch of land, a FoW, Impulse, and a Mox. I figure I'll need the extra land so I keep the hand...

I play a land, Mox Pearl, and Impulse for a Helm.
Steve Strips my land.
I play a land and Helm.
Steve Wastes my land.
I play a land.
Steve Wastes my land.
I play a land.
Steve Wastes my land.
I play a land.
Steve Wastes my land.
I draw a wheel.
Steve plays a swamp.
I play a land.
Steve plays a swamp, Mox, and Icequakes my land.

I'm REALLY frustrated at this point and ready to pretty much give up. My hand consisted of something like Wheel, Force of Will, Force of Will, Meditate, and Timetwister. There's nothing I can cast so I let Steve go. He plays a Dark Ritual, Tutor, and casts something I can't remember, maybe a Cursed Scroll. I draw a Wheel. Then on his turn he makes a huge mistake. He plays Lotus, Yawgmoth's Will (MISTAKE), Ritual, Tutor, and ends with a Hippie (which I FoW). Then, by a grace of God, I topdeck the Balance. Steve has two cards, I have close to a full hand. I decide to Balance anyways because I'll take out all his lands except a mox, I keep a Twister and a FoW. Anyways, since I'm drawing on here, I manage to pull a land, cast the Timetwister. I draw an amazing hand with Fastbond and Academy and go off with a win.

Game 3 (Steve lets me play first again, even though he KNOWS I'm playing Academy)

I draw something insane like Academy, Mox, Crypt, Helm, Lotus, Wheel, Vault. I win before Steve even gets his first turn.

Round 3 (I get down-paired to play Rob with Sligh)

I won't bore you with the specifics, basically Academy beats sligh. Especially when you play a Glacial Chasm in Academy.

Round 4 (Bryce with rOSE)

Game 1
I got destroyed. He countered all my draw sevens and basically beat me down with Morphling goodness.

SB: < 3x Impulse, < 3x Meditate, < Lotus Petal, < Vampiric Tutor, < 2x Helm; > 4x Masticore, > 4x Red Blast, > 2x FoW

Game 2
I didn't draw a single counterspell. Bryce twisted my hand away on the third round I think. I managed to get out a Masticore and kill off a Morphling, a Factory, and a Dwarven dual eater. I ended up dieing to my own Mana Crypt.

* * *

Okay, I wasn't really worried, I expected Keeper/OSE to own my Academy deck. But I figured I had easily made the top four. I was 3-1 and the only guy I lost too was Bryce, who was the only person who went 4-0. But, for some reason, the computer didn't like me. After Steve fixed everyone's records, I was placed 5th, AFTER two other people who went 3-1.

<begin rant engine>
The method used to decide tie breakers SUCKS. It's dumb, it's stupid, it's inaccurate, and way too random. (This was the third tournament in a row where I missed the Top-Whatever because of a tie breaker.)

You see, what did me in THIS time was that Bob, my first opponent, lost to his next opponent as well and then dropped out of the tournament. So because he did poorly and I got randomly paired up with him first round, I get screwed out of the Tie Breaker.

Who in the world came up with this system?!

I was 3-1.
Steve was 3-1.
Josh was 3-1.
(and I think Pat? was 3-1)

Steve and Josh went on to the final four. I don't understand. For starters, if I beat Steve, doesn't that place ME higher than him? So how come he's allowed to move on and I'm not? Also, if the only person I lost to was the only person that went 4-0, it should mean that I lost to the toughest opponent, which should give me the best chance in a tie breaker.

Oh well. Anyways, I'm not bitter that I didn't win the tournament (I don't need a Ruby), I'm just upset at how the Swiss tie breakers work.
</end rant engine>

In the end it was a great trip. A big thanks goes out to Steve (Zherbus) for letting me stay at his (parent's) place. THANKS!

I had a lot of fun. I discovered how dirty Academy can be (first turn win!). And learned how wretched the state named Vermont is (no offense).

Oh, and of course, congrat's to Carl for winning. (picture)

Quote Sylvan Learning Center has been the deciding card in the mirror from the 700 hours of mirror matches we played the other night.

Yes indeedy, and the only thing more broken than Sylvan in this matchup is Sylvan+Zorb.  (I notice Carl is missing a Zorb, I assume thats the card was trying to think of.)

Did you talk to him about this?  What was his secret plan?  I suspect that he's been playing too much Draft lately.  Wink

Of course, he ended up in the finals with a rogue deck, so he can't be too bad a player.  Btw, what did you all think of the MonoB deck?  Interesting, lucky, or just weird?

Man, do I ever hate flashbulbs. They cause me to flinch, and thusly expose my London resident-esque dental work...
