This is the saddest day I have ever had playing Magic. Let us dispense with pleasantries: I lost in the quarterfinals of the Type One Tournament of Champions to what proved to be my nightmare matchup - a curious three color gambit by the name of Clubber Lang, as piloted (and presumably designed) by our auspicious host, Eric Rouge, also known as Redman.

GAME ONE:

I cannot blame anyone but myself for this atrocity of a match. I kept what my testing had shown to be a horrid hand. The attractiveness of it started and ended with Bayou, Duress, Sol Ring. My turn one Duress revealed the following: Savannah Lions, Scrubland, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Masticore, Duress. Christ. We were also plagued by an ever-increasing lagtime, climbing to 107 seconds at one ping. I'm not going to even bother with a log for this game because nothing interesting happened. Suffice it to say that I kept a weak hand and was thusly manascrewed like a little girl.

GAME TWO:

I keep a hand of Bayou, Bayou, Dark Ritual, Mox Emerald, Black Lotus, Pernicious Deed. I get a Deed out before he can Mage it most annoyingly. He Swords to Plowshares my River Boa, and my Hypnotic Specter is answered with a Serendib Efreet. Damnation, all! He proceeds to Wasteland me down to a board of Emerald, Specter, Deed. This is bad, very bad. I am accumulating Dark Rituals in my hand, also a Spiritmonger...when I topdeck Mox Jet. It's not the Swamp I'd've liked but beggars can't be choosers. The Monger proceeds to apply quick-setting death to Eric, and I never do use the Deed. I don't think I ever draw another land, either.

GAME THREE:

Game three starts off with me hopeful but not yet optimistic. I make what is probably a horrible misplay and Deed while I have a Keg that I have lovingly built to two counters agianst his Serendib Efreet and newly-cast Savannah Lions. After the swath of destruction the Deed leaves, he calmly plays another Dib while I play another Keg. I am sitting on a Ritual and Will in my hand, and am about to explode back at him via the Lotus and Mox in my graveyard - when he plays a Meddling Mage naming Dark Ritual. Fuck. Okay, I'll just need another turn to Keg for two - until he Vindicates the Keg, and happens to cast a Will of his own, which just buries me in offal. One more turn, and what might have been...oh well. I am much happier to have lost to Eric's deck than to any other in the tournament, much less the Top Eight. I wish him the best of luck.

So far this tournament I have always played my go-to music, and have always won. Tonight, though, I went for it when I did not feel it - and lost. To any that would play PT Funk, I caution you - if you're not feeling it, you're not going to win. Now and forever - you ain't no thing if you ain't got the swing.

PS - About the following logs: since we had so much horrible lag, ignore the timestamps, as I have corrected them for readability by putting events in the proper order.\n\n

As the logs indicate, in the second game, I played a Meddling Mage while Matt had only one or two sources of mana on the table. I named edict, generally going for the creature removal before anything else, and deed was already on the table (he didn't have the mana to use it effectively though).  I completely forgot that he ran rituals, and in hindsight, that would be the best thing to name, as it would keep his mana supply low enough for me to pull  out the win, a tactic which proved itself in the third game.

In game 1, I initally mulliganed a hand with a Lotus and Dib, as it had no other mana sources. The hand I then drew was nice and disruptive, which worked far better than even I expected, as Matt didn't draw land beyon the first two and a Sol Ring.

In game three, with me fairly solidly in control I was able to vindicate the Keg, topdeck Will, play Strip Mine from the grave, and Ancestral from the grave bought me a Lotus and Mind Twist which added further insult to injury.
Otherwise, great report, and sorry we couldn't have met in the finals.

My sideboarding was thus:

Game 2:
+1 Masticore
+1 Balance
+1 Aura Fracture
+3 Samite Ministration
+4 Swords to Plowshares

-3 Negator
-4 Duress
-3 Psi Blast

Game 3 was the same except I realized the Ministrations would do squat (were mostly a knee-jerk reaction in game 2) so left the Psi-blasts in, because Psi-blasting a Negator is far more fun than Ministrating one.

Matt, tough loss . I've been rooting for PT Funk to win since I came across the list, but T8'ing is no slouch either .

Question: now that it's over, are you planning to continue work on the deck or pick up something else? Did the ToC give you any insight into any weaknesses that need to be shored up, and are there any other cards you want to try in the deck?

Holy shit, you took PsiBlast out? God, I wish I'd known that.

Yeah, I played your deck against mine a few games, my general sideboard was +4 swords, +1 balance, -4 duress, -1 skeletal scrying. Masticore wouldn't have done much that wasn't already there, and I didn't feel like I had enough enchantments to worry about to warrant Fracture.

I'll probably always continue to work on this deck. Black and green has been my favorite combination ever since I started playing back in Alliances, it just feels right to be playing those colors.

The worst part about my loss is that I feel that I had at least a "good" matchup with any of the other six T8 decks. I beat two of them on the way here! It's kind of ironic that I went and IDed in round six...If I'd played and lost, I probably would have made it at least another round!

As for weakenesses...well, white. Swords and Balance are both really nasty. I used to fear Sligh but that was when I had Erhnams instead of Spiritmongers and no Kegs in the sideboard. After boarding I have Deeds, Kegs, Hymns, Boas, and Mongers, which is a very tough wall for Sligh to push twenty damage through. A Wheel could probably do it, but little else - and they can only topdeck the Wheel (no tutors or drawing).

So white is my biggest fear. Meddling Mages were also really annoying. Really Eric's deck was just brutal against me - I give the matchup 30/70 in his favor, because my deck exploits two big factors of Type One - everyone plays with low casting cost stuff, making Deed golden, and everyone that plays with expensive stuff is slow and blue, and therefore gets ripped apart by discard, black 3cc guys, and Boas.

But, oh, that wiley Eric! He's running Masticores and Dibs, which annoy Deed, and he has the early creatures in enough numbers that I can't smash 15 life out of a Negator like I could a deck with only slow, fat creatures like Blastoderm. Maindeck PsiBlast also really blows. He's also got flexible removal, and tons of it - four Vindicates! Those would be a liability against conterspells but against me they're doom. I got manascrewed so often, so hard that I am seriously considering dropping the Emerald for another land - I can almost never use it first turn, and dies to any Deed. This would also bring the price of the deck down by about a fourth. Jet is still great, though, and Lotus is damn-near an integral part of the deck. Sol Ring is nice too.

In the end, Masticore doesn't scare me. Sligh doesn't scare me, nor Stompy (manaline.dec is really, really weak against Deeds and Kegs). Monoblue is a joke. Keeper is a little trickier because they have good removal, but still a decent matchup. Suicide revolves around two cards - Ritual and Hymn. Whoever gets those off first usually wins like 80% of the time. I've done notoriously well against Stacker2. I have yet to play TNT but it doesn't seem so much harder than Stacker due, again, to the infamous four maindeck Deeds. Parfait and Enchantress are more slow decks that enjoy having lots of little permanents on the board - and this time they can't even counter Deed like blue decks can. Pretty much any combo has the same gameplan - stall them with discard until you can get a Deed out and mana open. A blown Deed destroys the boards of Turbonevyn and Academy, and with mana open a Deed prevents Trix and Dragon from going off. Planar Void in the side hurts all these combo decks, as well as Oath and TNT. Even White Weenie is passable - once again, thanks to Deed (Spiritmonger's color-changing can come in handy there, too). I cannot extoll Pernicious Deed's power enough. It punishes decks that use the central theme of Type One - low casting cost.

A lot of people have been asking me about using the new fetchlands, and that might be nice, except that there's nothing I can use to fetch both my basic types, and sometimes you really want a Forest. You ALWAYS want a swamp, of course. I'm running 19 lands as-is, and because of the Deeds you can't really count the artifacts as stable mana-producers like you could in other decks. So nineteen lands is really, really low - even Sligh runs, what, twenty-two (seventeen mountains, five strips, maybe a Ruby)?

Other than that there's not much else I want to do with the deck except to keep playing it. It's tremendous fun, and at least has the potential to win any matchup. With the recent influx of permanent-heavy aggro decks, I expect the usefulness of Perncious Deed in Type One to only continue to rise.\n\n

Matt,

That was a great write up.  Sorry about the loss in top eight, seems like you would have done very well, had you not drawn Redman.
I hope to get a chance to play against your deck someday soon.

again, sorry
