Here are all the decklist from the 2002/11/03 tournament held at Carta Magica in Montreal, QC, Canada.

There were 73 participants, with the first prize being a mint Unlimited Black Lotus. 2nd place got 300$, 3rd and 4th, 170$, and 5th-8th 80$ in store credit to buy singles.

I'd like to thank the organizers, Mauro Bongiovanni and Serge Brosseau, for letting me have the decklists. You can find more information about upcoming tournaments in Montreal at www.cartamagica.com.

I wanted to start another thread containing a long analysis of the metagame, the decklists and various informations, but I lost my file after doing about 3/4 of it, and I don’t feel like starting again. It’s allready been some time since I wanted to post all that stuff anyway.

It took me lots of time to type all those decklists (about 7 hours). I’d like to get some kind of feedback. Is the information useful? Should I have just published the Top 8? Top 16? What kind of data would be usefull for all of you people? Would the different pairings and results of each rounds be appreciated in order to get some statistics about matchups? Should I have done my analysis thread anyway, even if it would have meant waiting another week? (I had analysed the power level, the color representation and the cards choice. I wanted to check the deck choices based on players rating as well as the impact of Onslaught). Well, any kind of feedback, either in this thread or through the Mana Drain messenger, would be appreciated.

Before presenting the decklist, here are the final standings. Many of the participants are members of this board, but since I didn't knew all of them, I chose to indicate no aliases. If they want to be publicly known, I guess it would be nice that they just put up a reply here.

Great job SiCK_Boy ! This is truly an interesting thing to read. Reminds me of the 77 players tournament analysis I did a few years ago on bdominia.

I would've liked to read your metagame analysis. Is there any chance you could possibly rewrite it ?

Quote
Quote Is the information useful? Should I have just published the Top 8? Top 16? What kind of data would be usefull for all of you people? Would the different pairings and results of each rounds be appreciated in order to get some statistics about matchups?

I like to have all the decklists, plus it's hilarious to read some of them. Pairings would be cool for the top 8 players.\n\n

I'll look to do it again. Expect it somewhere around the middle of next week.

As for the Top 8 pairings, you can figure them with the position after 7 rounds.

It was Yannick Veilleux vs. Sébastien Labrecque, Jason Kearney vs. Alexandre Caron, François Laroche vs. Francis Cormier and François Mathivet vs. Lam N Phan.

Then, it was Sébastien Labrecque vs. Alexandre Caron and François Laroche vs. Lam N Phan.

Alexandre Caron and Lam N Phan squared off in the final.

EXCELLENT JOB!!!

This is really a good quality view of the playing field in MTL!
If it weren'T for bad luck on my opening game, maybe my TNT deck would have performed a bit better. I really enjoyed playing in MTL. All of the participant were really pleasant to play with!
And I even got the chance to beat one of my opponent's with SQUEE!

P.S.: Jules Verreault is my name!

Hmm...only 1 Keeper deck and it top 8'd (an "old school" Keeper with green and no fetchlands).  With all the mono and 2 color decks near the top, the maindeck Scrying Glass looks pretty good.  The Mask deck seemed to do not-so-good at 4-3 (23rd place) for itself.  But then again, it was just one deck (for both Keeper and Mask).

for anyone interested, the # of players at each record for 7 rounds and 72 players is approximately (+/- 1 each way I believe, not counting IDs)

1    7-0
4    6-1
11  5-2
20  4-3
20  3-4
11  2-5
4   1-6
1   0-7

that should be 72 cards players.

weird, a u/r control deck that doesn't use ophidian took first.  although 2 maindeck shaman and miner must have done wonders.  starstorm is a great card for this deck though, since fast aggro is always a challenge for it, and although more costly, does the job a lot better then keg.

i agree w/ k-run, seeing some of those decklists towards the bottom of the list is a bit comical

How does Starstorm help against fast aggro (I assume you're talking about sligh, stompy, or zoo decks) better than other options like Pyroclasm?  By the time you can kill x/1 creatures, you need 3 mana, 2 of which are red (and he's running only 11 red permanent sources with no impulse for digging).  x/2 creatures need RR2 - Pyroclasm only costs R1 and would be a better choice here against "fast aggro" (not counting TnT or Mask, which are also fast, but by the time Starstorm does anything you'll be dead).

Some of the decks do look a little, scrubby, but as long as the players had fun and got some deck advice, good for them.  I'm surprised the reanimator in 72nd place did that bad, it didn't look that bad of a build.

Also - I'm assuming the people who had 14 card sideboards didn't get to use them - I thought it was 15 cards or 0 cards, am I wrong on that?

There was nobody at 7-0 because of ID. I ID my last two rounds, as well as the other player who was 5-0 (Alexandre Caron). The best finish was 6-1.

As for the first place deck, his 2 Dwarven Miners did wonder stopping my Ophidian (although I got some mana problems, but he still beat me fair and straight) in the Top 8. They were probably the key factor in the matchup, simply because of their 2 points of thoughness (I had no creature removal beside Blue Elemental Blast and Hydroblast).

Starstorm is good because of the versatility. Sure, it costs more than Pyroclasm, but you can always cycle it when there's no threat. As a main deck card, it's certainly superior.

By the way, in case you didn't knew, I'm François Laroche (3rd place finish).

And about the illegal decklists, I don't think any of them got catched besides the one with multiple Fastbond and Yawgmoth's Bargain.

There were no deck check and very few control of the decklist, sadly. Still, I don't think any of the Top finishers cheated, but it would have been more respectful of the players to do deck checks each rounds.

And if the people with 14 cards sideboard got catched, the penalty would be Game Loss and the adding of basic lands to cover up the missing slots. In case you get catched with a 16 cards sideboard, it's the first (or last, not 100% sure) card on the sideboard list that gets removed. There's no more invalidated sideboard since some time already.

But if the goal is have a few cards that are good against fast aggro decks (the ones I mentioned above), Pyroclasm and Earthquake are superior in that respect.  Yes you can cycle them, but if they're in there for the fast aggro purpose, they're not optimal and I would see them being too slow.

I saw a couple keeper decks in the middle (like 32-33 or something), but I didn't really look at the whole list, so I don't know if there were more than just those 3.

The tourney those not have that much keeper. Most off the player have 5 strip and a lot off non basic hate. Its fun to have all the deck list at least I can see agains what I will play next time and build a better sideboard...

I am waiting for your metagame analysis.
PS: My name is Frederic Drapeau (sui black in 45th place). I drop after the 5th round going 2 win:3 lost after a lot off mana screw... Next time I pack 4 Factory...

Any comment on the skill of the lower ranked keeper players? Seems like even with NB hate they should have done a lot better than they did.

It doesn't look like the lower rank keeper players were powered. Keeper can perform in an environment of pure hate, look at the neutral ground metagame for example.

1 of them wasn't powered, and they both had sideboards very lacking against aggro decks (i.e. no extra spot removal, e.g. swords to plowshares).

Wasn't this a proxy tournament?  If that is the case, there is no reason for unpowered Keeper.

Anyway, as the designated Keeper cyinc of this site I would have to say that Keeper had no chance in this metagame.  Look at all of that Mono-Blue or Blue-Red control!  Some decks had 4 Wastes, 1 Strip, 1 Dustbowl and others packed maindeck Miners with more counters than Keeper, and more creature control than Keeper.

These one and two color decks are capable of more aggro hate, more permission and, with Ophidian, just as much card drawing as Keeper, but they are more redundant and less vulnerable to non-basic hate or mana screw.  To be fair, Keeper is capable of more brokenness, but it's difficult to pull off regularly at such a large tournament with so much redundancy and hate.

Anyway, good post.  Very informative.

The tournament was sanctioned so no proxy were allowed. The power level is very impressive, with all the top 16 having power (best finish without power was 20th place with a weird slight deck).

Wow a santcioned 73 player type I tourney. That is incredible. Recently I have stopped playing type II (in part due to my anger at Mark  Rosewater's attitude towards type I), so I usually only get to play once a month at the Hairy T tourney in Toronto. I am always happy to hear about large type I sanctioned events as it gives me hope (perhaps false hope) that it will send some kind of a message to Wizards that our format is still alive and kicking.

Oh and congrats Lam on the win!

Void is good as good against Sligh as anything, where did you get the idea otherwise. He even runs all 4 kegs maindeck, SB Spinning Darkness, and Masticore.

My guess is that he either played foolishly (sending a Hymn face first into Misdirection, a Sinkhole face first into a Response, etc) or he had some rough luck against Parfait and Suicide.

Chafik is more of a limited player, and to the best of my knowledge, it was his first Type 1 tournament. I don't know what his matchups were, but he dropped somewhere around round # 3 (so that explains why people with worst decks did better, with the bye and all...).

He's an above average PTQ player with basicaly no Type 1 experience, if that can help explain his performance.

Now, for the next tournament (December 1st), I should have the results of each round, which should give us interesting data about the different matchups (even though the turnout will probably be more around 40 than 70), and I should be able to do an analysis without losing my document halfway through.

One thing to consider might be to cut the desklists and only show the top 16 or so...it was kind of annoying to scroll through the decks (I have dial-up at home).  The decks didn't really seem to add too much to the discussion, maybe just list the decktypes below 16 or 20...
