Keep in mind that the 4 Workshops will allow for more (and better) prizes for the rest of the top 4/top 8.

Beta Lotus. Winner takes all, losers get a pat on the back for coming out.
j/k of course, but I would like to see the Beta Lotus for first and smaller prizes for 2nd-4th. 4 Workshops for 1st place at the TMD tourney doesn't seem to be an appropriate prize.

I would have to say a Beta Black Lotus just for the prestige of owning one. I know i cherish my Beta signed one even though it may not be Mint, its a Beta Lotus that always looks beautiful.
just my opinion though.

I think it would be very tough to ask for a prize that would make this event not worth it.
I think something along the lines like this:
Assuming a $20 entry fee, at least 25 people would need to show to allow a break-even point for a Beta Black Lotus as 1st prize (25 people x $20= $500, a Beta Lotus can be had for that).
Anything past that is asking the tournament organizers to shell out some money.
If more people show then I could think prizes could be filtered down.
1st Place - Beta Lotus - 25 people @ $20 2nd Place - 4 Workshops - 35 people @ $20 3rd Place - Library of Alexandria - 40 people @ $20 4th Place - The Abyss - 45 people @ $20
Anything past 45 people and for 5th to 8th place prizes could be smaller Beta cards (Demonic Tutor, Balance, Sol Ring, etc...).
Based on the above schedule I think it would be an appropriate pay schedule to:
1st - Worth about $500 2nd - Worth about $200 3rd - Worth about $100 4th - Worth about $50
But, that's just my idea.

It might be worthwhile to have pre-registration cost US$20 and at-the-door-registration cost $25, so we can gauge #'s better.

My votes for the 4 Workshops. Mostly because I already have a Lotus, though it's unlimited, and only 1 workshop and I find these days Workshops are harder to find than Beta Loti.

I'm all for the Beta Lotus.
$20 seems reasonable and I'm sure we will get enough people to cover at least the Lotus. Like Carbon said, the prestige of owning one is to much to pass up. Then again I might already have a Beta one by then but oh well I'm still playing

@ Brian - Well this one won't be beat to hell like the one you are getting is. I think I'm going to vote for the Beta Lotus too. Just too good of a prize to pass up.

BTW do u think I can hitch a ride with you or are you going with someone else? on topic: I think pre-registration is a good idea since it would allow us to get a general idea of who is coming and if we'll have enough for the lotus.

I'd like to echo the thought of having those who intend on coming pre-register. Considering that some people will be driving in from butt-fuck Idaho, it would be nice to have confidence in a strong turnout. Also, it would help finance some of those prizes so that the prize committee doesn't have to shell out too much from their own pocket.

Yeah, I think pre-registration would be key since I'm apparently the only person on the prize committee (any volunteers?) and I don't have the money to shell out for a Beta Lotus on my own. Maybe the Workshops, but definitely not a Beta Lotus in decent condition. That is, provided its possible to find a Beta Lotus in decent condition for under $600 within the next few weeks.

don't forget that there's also some cost associated with where ever we're going to play. so even if it's $20 a head, not all of that i prize money.

It's what I based my example on. Abra, where exactly do you live? You should give me the number to the shop and tell them to hang onto it until I talk to them or something. I'm not having much luck finding one for a reasonable price, much less one that would be guaranteed to get here in time. I'm not too sure about the 2nd-4th place prizes either. Just for the record, the poll is mainly to see what people would prefer. Nothing is set in stone at this point in time.

The cost of a Beta Lotus is the reason why I didn't want to have that as a prize . Plus, i'm sure more people could use 4 Workshops than a Beta Lotus. Maybe second prize could be a random piece of power and 3rd and 4th could be like, an Italian Abyss/Moat and a Morphling or something(maybe another italian abyss/moat)(A Morphling would be sorta like getting your entry fee back) Carl

How can you not need a Lotus? It's not like its that hard to trade/sell away.
@Brian - I could probably give you a ride, although if Louis is going I'll probably go with him.

Sorry about my disappearance lately, I was finishing "The History of Syrus" for posting.
I would be willing to be on the prize commitee with ya Klown. you can IM me on here or Yahoo to talk.
I think either prize would be really cool. The Lotus might get more attention from those that are planning to come from afar (like Va or Chicago or something), but might be cost prohibative. The workshops would also be cool as a full set is kinda hard to come by now adays, though I'm not sure if thet carry the prestige to gather people to this meeting. I would love the entery fee to be $20 or lower but I think we might have to Shoot for 25-30 to ensure prize support.
I am sure there will be a great turnout for this.

You sir, have a deal. MolotDET is now officially part of the Prize Comittee. I have volunteered CrazyCarl to be the Altered States Liason.
I did the math and with Abra's shoppekeeper's $500 Beta Lotus, we're going to need about 40 people to show up at $25 pre-reg, $30 at the door for the following prize structure:
1st Place: 1 Beta Black Lotus 2nd Place: 4 Mishra's Workshops 3rd Place: 4 Illusionary Masks (thought these would be a kickass prize and not too expensive compared to 1st and 2nd) 4th Place: Something worth around $50 (maybe 3 Itl. Nether Voids?)
Of course this probably isn't going to happen since 40 people haven't converged on one location to play Type 1 in the North Eastern US for ages. Not even Worlds 2001 had 40 people. Altered States can hold 40 people if you all think you're up to the task.
Molot, do you mind collecting pre-registrations? I can't since I don't have a bank account and I don't think I can get one. Also, in case I don't get to you soon enough or whatever, keep your pupils peeled for Workshops.
And for God's sake, will ten people please vote for the Workshops before midnight tomorrow?!?!?
Oh, and I'm thinking we should allow P9 proxies to level the playing field and get more people. If we end up getting the largest North Eastern US Type 1 turn out in like 5 years, I'm going to take pictures and send them to Mark Rosewater to let him know anyway.\n\n

The possibility exists that I might be able to get a ride, so there is a chance that I may end up going.
At any rate, I don't think we should allow proxies. I really have never been a fan of this anywhere because some people worked hard to get there power...It isn't really fair that you can just go and proxy it. Most people would still come if they couldn't. If you don't have power, you can build around it. If you do, all the better.

i for one just wanted to thank you guys for the effort your putting into this. it would be great if this did turn out to be one of the biggest events in some time.
as for the prizes, i've already voted for the lotus (i think this is really in everyone's best interest if it can be done). also, you could easily trade it for the desired workshops. the other top 4 prizes look great too.
as for proxies, its hard to say. if you wanted a more even (i.e. skillbased) environment, then proxies would be a step in the right direction. most people with power have been playing longer and will be able to win anyways, regardless of the decks they play.
on the other hand, i can completely understand where bigchuck is coming from. i'm playing in the sapphire tournament in new hampshire, which is proxied. i'll say more after experiencing that.

Quote also, you could easily trade it for the desired workshops. Heh. You obviously haven't tried to get workshops recently. It's impossible to find one, much less a complete set. However, since I can't go, I won't vote. Proxy discussion belongs in the proxy poll, though.

BigChuck's proxy comment actually inspired the proxy poll.
The voting is over and the Beta Lotus has won. You bitches.
The Prize Comittee spits on you, and we will now try to acquire the desired prizes for you greedy little bitches.
Bitches.
