Sunday Evening Magic

A Sunday Without Coffee.

   It ends up being a late night at the bar, and I get out and home around 4:30 Anti-Meridian. I hop onto mIRC #themanadrain to see what’s what and no one is around, or at least awake, so I fiddle around a little before I am tired enough to sleep.
   I wake up at 11:00 (also in the Anti-Meridian), after about five and a half hours of sleep. Into the kitchen and right to the cabinet for the can of coffee (that’s right Cividel, COFFEE). It’s empty. “Son of a bitch,” I shout at the top of my lungs. How am I supposed to wake up without coffee? I check out mIRC again and Steve is on, as well as a few other people that never seem to sleep. So I chat for a bit trying to get my wits about me. Than a shower, cause I don’t want to smell like those typical magic geeks (which by the way there were two of today, I can’t remember their names but, one smelled like old dried-out corn-beef hash and the other I would say smell distinctly like cold White Castle Burgers). I get my red “The Flash” tee-shirt from the closet and dress hurriedly. I get my shit together, kiss my girl good-bye and I am off like a prom-dress.
   None of the boys from the store called this morning, I notice this when I am driving. Guess that means that no-one needs to borrow anything today. Suddenly there is a flash of light, and I notice three angels waving me into the parking lot of … the local Starbucks (bet you thought I forgot about the coffee).
   I usually drink like a whole pot or two. So I am a little worried that the lack of such will effect my performance today. So with that in mind, I get a five shot, venti, eggnog-latte’ (for those of you who aren’t in the know or drink Tea that is five shots of espresso in a twenty ounce cup, fill w/eggnog). On the way I notice a god offal amount of traffic for a Sunday (Bergen county has a blue law) and the wind is really strong and is whipping like thousands of leaves into the air just above the highway surface. This is causing the drivers around me to drive even worse than they usually would.
   Finally, I get to Gamemaster and there is an entire legion of empyreal troops inside or perhaps it’s the Binghamton Crew. As I am pulling up I notice the members of Team Goat walking through the door. There are some other people hanging around, notably Hulk3Rules, about 10 or so Yu Gi Oh kids, just there being annoying and my store regulars. I get about 5 “it’s about time you showed ups” and a few “we didn’t think you were comings” before I get some quick trading in with CrazyCarl. I get to ensuring that the regs haven’t turned there decks back into crap, after my two weeks of prepping them for this. I notice the lack of U-factor and a few others that are some of the better of the stores players. And I find that not only have some of these Idiots (couldn’t think of a nicer word while remaining true to my feelings) are playing completely different decks…
   Around a few minutes after twelve Chunk,Chunk shows up. He is the stores resident T2 player. He is pretty good at it so I figured if I gave him a fairly easy T1 deck to play and explained exactly how it works, he couldn’t fail me. So when he shows up I mock up a copy of D.E.Sligh and give the crash course and explain exactly how to sideboard in any match-up.
   A little bit later the NG:NY guys show up as a few other random stragglers walk in. It’s now 12:30 (Post-Meriden) and we are all set with deck reg and entry fees and such.

   Highlights of this tourney: Jason (the store owner), spelling just about everyone’s name wrong when entering them into the computer. Funky Fourth and Fifth round drops and I. D.’s, one notably was by someone ranked 5th. All of these shenanigans caused the Kid playing My Sligh deck to miss top8s by .02 of a point (because his breakers were somehow no-longer as good). Tainted Mask goes undefeated in Swiss. Complete validation for Binghamton in their rivalry with NG:NY. CrazyCarl walks away from his top8 match saying “Steve was right,” and quickly puts two basic Islands in his deck and a BeB in his SB (hi Zherbus). The excessive use of hyphens in this tourney report. Again someone mentions “Oral Cocksucking?” and someone throws out my fucking Starbucks before I am even half way through it.

   The field shapes up to be 24 people (not too good of a turn-out for the prizes) but it is quite diverse, and it shapes up like this:

   As for me, I am quite miffed by my missing coffee and definitely under-caffeinated.

Round 1 vs. Enchantress (Jeremy C.)
   Game 1 – I start out early with the card drawing. Ancestral first turn, LoA on second, third Deep Anal + flashback. Meanwhile he gets out enchantress but it seems every thing else gets countered. 5th turn I Ill/dont and he packs it up two turns later.
   Game 2 – he drops a first turn Brush land, which somehow manages to be the only land he plays in the first five turns. By the time he get out the second I have drawn an ass load of cards but have still not gotten a Donate. I get one on turn 10 and he still only has four land out. I combo and strip a land, heh.

Round 2 vs. Tainted Mask (Hulk3Rules)
   Game 1 – He starts out with: City/Lotus/sack for Hippy, I pitch Force(donate). I drop Island/Sapphire/ruby go. He draw/goes turn 2 and 3, while I draw/island/go both as well. 4th turn he plays Illusionary Mask to my Drain. I am happy and sad because I have never played against mask IRL before and quickly write in mask on my notes. This leaves me with Timetwister and Mana Leak in hand. I draw into the emerald, drop it and twist. I get: Ancestral, Acc Knowledge, Intuition, the pearl, MisD, Force, Illusions. I am as ecstatic as I can be on no coffee. I pass. He goes Unmask, I respond with Ancestral as does he, I Intuit for 3 AK and AK for 3 (Donate, Island, Academy). At this point I’m not sure what I was thinking. The words, “MisD (pitching force) unmask to you.” Escape my lips. I am looking dead at his Ancestral when I say that. Anyway, I don’t even fight that. I suck it up and hope it doesn’t cost me the match (little did I know this would be the first of many mistakes I would make in my coffee less stupor). Any way I get: Twalk, Wish and the Lotus off my Ancestral and he draws off his, heh. So I drop Academy/mox/lotus, and am sitting on up-words of 17 mana. I Ill/dont/walk/wish/Capsize(buyback) and that’s game
   Game 2 – I have a rough time knowing exactly what, is a bad draw for this deck. For the record: 3 mox(no Sapphire), Island, Illusions, Twister, Intuition is a good hand against mask, I just thought it wasn’t at the time. He first turns swamp/duress(twister). For some reason even though I draw an island and I know what I have to do, I take a chance. On his second turn he vamp tutor’s, his eot I show how much of an idiot I am, and Intuition for 3 AKs rather than 3 Donates. So rather than winning game 2 I lose. Because he drops mask/Juggy on the next turn and rides it to victory while I get two Illusions in play but never topdeck a Dont.
   Game 3 – I decide to play for some reason (I never do that). I land/go. He goes swamp/rit I pitch force(merchant scroll) he drops lotus and I’m thinking “of all the luck?” Negator hits the board. He starts swinging as I get up to four land by turn 3 thanks to Timewalk. I drop Illusions when I’m at nine (mistake #2) sitting with a land in hand. He swings and drops a second Negator, I topdeck Donate. 4 land in play, two tapped, Illusions in play, Donate, one land in hand (Academy, heh) and at 24 life, while he has 3 land in play. I drop the Academy and say good games. I turn my top card and uncover Stripmine. Exactly the right card, f I had said “draw” at the beginning of the game, or cast Illusions 1 turn later…

Round 3 vs. Dragon (Howie)
   Game 1 - I have no real notes of this match, the table we were sitting at was quite cramped and it wasn’t conducive to note taking. I know I drew ass loads of cards and cast and flashback both Deep Anal. Once he was set up with all his shit in the grave I cast Timetwister. I get Illusions in play, but never get Donate. I counter like two thousand animate effects but after twister I don’t get much card drawing. I run out of counters, and he gets the combo off.
   Game 2 – I am drawing card early and I draw into twister, as he is getting his pieces into the grave. I run out of steam and am left with Illusions, BEB and Twister in hand. I should have kept that. I twister somewhere around turn 9 when I topdeck lotus, because I have those three cards and he has a full hand and his shit in the grave. I pick up my new hand and it is: 3 Donate, Intuition, Wish, Ruby and AK. I drop my mana and say go, he entombs dragon and Laquatis. Funny, I eot Intuition for 3 AK’s, at this point I have three mana left and could wish for divert from my SB. I don’t. I draw Ancestral and pass. He goes to animate, I Ak for 3 and Ancestral and pitch Force (donate). He plays Dance I AK #4 and pitch Force (scroll) again. He taps out for Animate #2. I have one untapped mana in play and 2 Donates, 2 Mana Drain, 1 Mana Leak, 1 Illusions, 1 Island, Emerald, 1 Deep Anal and Wish (which should have been Divert) in hand…

Round 4 vs. White Weenie (theHackensackKid)
   Game 1 - I play early Deep Anal and flash it back. I start drawing cards hand over fist and he somehow slips a creature past my counter wall. I combo on turn 5 and he can’t pay the upkeep two turns later.
   Game 2 – he sides in like 5 disenchant effects to go along with the four he had maindeck. I look in my SB and notice nothing is really good against WW so I bring in Psiblast and take out 2nd merchant scroll. Anyway, he starts dropping shit loads of creatures and I don’t get a Don’t to go along with the Illusions I have in hand.
   Game 3 – I mull a bad hand to an even worse hand (3 donate, Island, mox sapphire, Mana Leak). I mull down to five to an even worse hand. He spits out creatures like his deck has a lisp and I never recover from my 5 card hand.

Round 5 vs. the Great White Hype (Kl0wn)
   Game 1 – we both know we were out of it, so we kind of play a lackluster set of games. He takes a long drawn out game one, when I realize that all my donates are in the grave and so is twister.
   Game 2 – time is called right before the end of this game. Where he is at 44 life and I combo twice and Timewalk than wish for Psiblast on my Timewalk turn.

There were so many people from the home metagame missing I am not going to list the missing decks. Needless to say many of the people that travel from near by didn’t show either.

   Thanks to all of you who came from far off places like: Binghamton, NGNY, Connecticut, south Jersey and west Jersey. As well as Hulk3rules, for coming all the way from Mass by himself, at least he had the lotus to keep him company on the way back.
