T1 Teams Tourney.

Alright... I know am an unknown on the boards here, so i'll introduce myself.

My name is Mike Roche, I been playing magic casual since its first comings, and seriously since invasion.  I used to be a t2 player 4L, but then my friend alex kept talking about t1 and how fun it was, then i found out, and thats what brings me here.

But back to my topic. I've been seeing t1 getting a minor push lately, with many local stores holding more t1 events and now "The Manadrain Inviatational" might be happening, so i thought i'd give my plans to make t1 a huge part of the Magic Community.

So this is my first and very broad proposal.

With all the "teams" such as the NGNY Guys, The Bing guys, my team (goat) and many others, why not have a 1-4 person team event.

My idea goes like this.

Each team will register 3 different deck Archtypes; example
1 keeper, 1 tnt, 1 suiblack

then at the beginning o the event, each team member will be randomly given a deck their team registered. They will play w/ that deck through the tourney.

The tourney will go the designated # of rounds and such until a t8 is declared.

Then, depending on the number of teammates in the t8...each team which is represented in the t8 can pick which team member will play in the t8 and with which deck.

Then whatever teammate wins, that team will be declared the Tag Team Champions of T1 MTG.

so what do you guys think? seem like a good idea or no...

would u want someting like this?
and am not limiting this to know crews or teams, any 3 people can decided to team up and play for their own indviviual(spelling  ) aspects...as prizes will be supported by myself, or money raised from entry fees.

It is interesting, but what if the team doesn't want to play an established archetype and goes rogue?  What category does that fit?  Can you only have 1 rogue deck per team?  

How do you define archetypes?  If I had a deck that used 3 colors but had a lot of weenies and burn is that Sligh?

I think a better idea is to have it like team limited where the teams play each other and everyone on each team have different seats (A,B,C).  Then if 2 of the 3 players win their match that team gets the win.

If you really want to throw a wrinkle into it then make the rule that each team must obey the restricted list as a team meaning 1 lotus per team.  I don't know if anyone likes this idea, but I was just throwing it out.  Damn I don't even know if I like this idea.

Just some thoughts.

i think that other than the restrictions to archetype , that sounds like a fun idea, i would play in something like that.

i agree with the archtypes problem, but its an overall good idea, well thought out
just say that three ppl can't play the same deck...and make a rule about not being a pussy and entering sligh, stupid red burn, and ankh burn

This could be fun.

If you don't want people playing the same decks, just make a rule that no two decks on a team can have exactly the same colors.

So if one person plays sligh, the others can have red cards, but they can't play mono-red decks (so sligh/keeper/TnT would be okay, but Mezzir's triple sligh example wouldn't)

And the A/B/C best 2 of 3 matchup format is a pretty good one. We might want to cut to a T4 instead of a T8, though (top 4 teams, instead of top 8 players). That way, you give the first place prize to the best team, not to a team that just did well enough and had one really great player.

Ok.... so this is how it would work..

Team Register beforehand hopefully.

Teams cannot play EXACT decks, but must have divesity, as J_or's example.

Matches will be a 3 on 3 match, with obvious 2/3 winning the team the match.

Matches will be played in an A/B/C seat format, seats determined by the team.

Decks will not be shown before hand, this is to encourage fair gameplay, and not matching up decks w/ good matches etc.

Am kinda looking at this from a team limited point of view.

also i think cutting to top 8 is a great idea.

Date: Mid Febuary- March ?
Location: Somewhere neutral, Like NY, Penn.
Cost: 60 per team sound ? - 20 each?
Prizes: Am thing, having a p9 type deal- winning team gets choice of 3 p9 pieces, 2nd and 3rd get the rest, and the 4th place teams gets like mana drains, abyss something to that extent.
Time: Preferably late morning 11-12
Rounds: 5-6 w/ cut to t4.


how does this sound to everyone, i would really like some input from people ike Z and Molot, and kl0wn possibly.

$20 a head is expensive. Also, j_orlove's method of colors would prevent something like keeper/stacker2/sligh. Or a team running Gro/Oath/Toronto Stompy. Rather than have it be by colors, just put a disclaimer on all the advertising your do (flyers, etc) that teams need three different decks, to be decided subjectively by the TO, and ask them that if there's any doubt (suicide/void, or gro/supergro), have them verify their choices with you beforehand. Use common sense, and you'll be okay.

Seriously though, I doubt having a restriction on the archetypes played per team would really accomplish anything.

I'd say if the members of a team each wanted to run the same (or similar) deck, then let them.

I can understand you want an environment full of variety, and I would agree on this limitation if there were truly a dominant deck in Type 1 at the moment, but there's not. Look at the top 8s of the last 3 big tournaments over the past couple of weeks; the metagame has gone berserk.

If you look at the finals of the Gamemasters, YMG and Concord tournaments alone, you see this:

Gamemasters: Mask vs. 5 color Keeper
YMG: Lich Donate vs. urPhidian
Concord: ihateduals.dec vs. Emerald Alice

To summarize: since the metagame is healthy, let the players be self-policing.

And hell, if all 3 people wanna play keeper, they'll have to bite the bullet vs the all suicide team

anyway, who esle thinks this is a good idea, and if so, do you think it could get off the ground?  We could run it like a worlds type deal.

I don't mean to sound pessimistic, but what about players who really don't have competitive people to partner up with?There are quite a few people that play t1 independantly. I think it would be a mistake just to cut people out because they don't have partners. Maybe this problem could be solved by doing a team request thread or something.

Being able to choose your partners would be fine, even if you didn't have someone to parter up with. I'm sure people will go there specifically with the thought in mind that there will be extra people lying around who need a partner.

I know it sounds really cool on paper, but I think that in reality, 3-on-3 matches are gonna be a little long.  Maybe it would be a better idea to go with teams of 2?  I'm not sure, as I've only played 3-on-3 once or twice before, but I remember the games going for a little while.

Two on two would be cool, but I think if you did it that way, you should restrict the decks, making sure people dont play the same ones. I Think it would be easier to get teams of two also.

I just want to clear this up..

it wouldnt be a melee type match w/ 3 players going vs 3 players at the same time.. by no means.

it would work like this

my team for example going vs random team w/ players 1 2 3

My team = james, alex, roche

now

Random team play 1 is the a seat, 2 is the b seat, 3 is the c seat

Goat team, Alex is a seat, james b seat, roche c seat

therfore
alex goes vs 1 head on head
James vs 2 head on head
roche vs 3 head on head.

then which ever team wins 2 matches 1st, wins, although the 3rd match must end for the whole match to end.

if some of u are confused. go to the sideboard, and look at the worlds coverage.

they have extensive team play on there.

hrm, maybe the place that is supposively hold the manadrain invivational would hold the teams tourney...

Thats no fun! That doesn't really require any teamwork, and you'd probably be better off running a one on one tournament if you were going to do that, because it'd be less trouble getting partners and such.




Not to mention, teams games would be significantly more fun.

Actually chuck, it is alot of fun, i've done it before w/ limited events.

Also, there are so many "teams" and "crews" that actually having a tourney to play it out and find out which team is actually the t1 tag team champs would be great fun in my eyes.

I'd also have belts made for the winners

But then again, how many of these "teams" and "crew"s have exactly three people in them, so some could have multiple entrants, thus defeating the purpose. I'm sure its fun that way, I just think it would be significantly more fun, interesting, and original, doing it this way.

If you have more than 3 people in your play groupl then you enter multiple teams.  

I think it sounds like a great time.  I am sure I could get a team depending on location/cost.  I don't think that $20 a person is that bad depending on prizes.
