Type 1 Tourny in Waterbury, Ct

Here's the skinny.  As many of you know I hold tournaments in Waterbury, Ct. for a Beta Mox about once every 2 months (except recently where student teaching has taken all my time and money).  I usually run them Type 2 because more people from Ct play type 2 then Type 1 so I get better attendance.  Type 2 players don't come to the Type 1 because they feel they have no chance so if I did do a type 1 it would involve proxies in some way.  I am now looking for feedback from the Type 1 and Type 2 people alike.  Please vote and post your thoughts.  Also, ask any of the Hadley Crew (most have been to one of my events) about how much of a great time it is.  (SHAMELESS PLUG)  My goal for these tournies is to eventually get from the 30-40 person turnouts i get now to 70-80 person turnouts so I could offer a Lotus as the main prize each time.  Thanks for your time.

I don't think you're going to get too many people for option 3 here.

Why no choice for regular T1 without proxies? I would do it either that way or with any number of proxies, as long as it's T1.

     As for attendance, I would be interested but cannot guarantee my attendance.  If this were for April or May than I could say with some certanty that I would be off work.
     Non the less I would be interested in a type1 torny.  Since Waterbury is kinda close to Jersey.

if i can get there i'll be there no matter what the tourney is, although i'd prefer it be type 1
and about that shameless plug - he did have a point.  i went to a type 2 one with no intention of winning and still had a blast. i ran a battle of wits deck and didn't do well, but then i had time to do other stuff.  he held trivia and some other random ways to win prizes, all of which were really fun

Kl0wn hit the spot: a Type 2 tourney deserves a boosterbox. Giving a Beta Mox is sacrilege as the winner will probably sell it to buy boosters

Proxy tournaments are really beginning to become a real peeve for me.  

First, there's the belief that they allow a more even playing field.  I believe that they add to the stigma that you need all the power to compete in Type 1.  

Second, type 1 players are always complaining that WOTC doesn't care about T1.  One way to show WOTC that there is interest and that people play it is to sanction tournaments.  

I was hoping Hadley, MA would start to sanction their T1 events.  It sounds like they have a good weekly turnout and their monthly events are pretty large.  Here in CT, Card Empire in Torrrington is going to start sanctionng thier events again, a store that has at least 15+ every Sunday.

As a TO Ray, I understand that you've got to get the funds to cover the space and the prize, however I'd much rather see a sanctioned T1 event than anything allowing proxies.  With T1's recent interest starting to peak, I'd hate to see theses numerous proxy "price guide" events kill the recognition that WOTC may give to the T1 format.

So here's a vote for none of the above and a write in for a sanctioned T1 event.

First I would just like to say thanx for your replies and feecback...I feel for ya Clown and in a few cases I have made deals with the winner of the Type 2 events for a combination of cards they needed in exchange for the Beta Mox.  I am producing the flyers for my tourney right now and am going to make it Type 1 with a choice between a Beta Mox Emerald or $150 for first prize.  This alternate prize is another incentive to attract Type 2 players.  I have already posted my dilema of not having the peak number of players I would like for any format but if five proxy type 1 does well enough maybe I can gradually cut down the number of proxies allowed and eventually SANCTION THEM.  From my point of view though you must realize that it needs to be worth my time to hold these tournaments.  I hope that doesn't make me sound more like a business man then a Magic Player but none of you would want to put countless hours into the promotion of a tournament only to take a loss.

That really bugs me too.  Miracle grow is not that difficult a deck to build and it does okay in Type 1 even powerless.
Sligh is a good deck to build without any power.
How about G/B beats.  Or treu creature suicide.  People just want to whine and make excuses.

I would love to see sanctioned type 1...as for myself...as I said I am unfortunately not in a position to do it...for now...

I think its great that you're at least interested in keeping the Type 1 players happy even though its not quite as easy or profitable.  Even though there have been a decent number of tournies I haven't made or won't make in the future, thanks.

About the proxies: My first reaction is that if you can get more people there, its a damn good thing.  I do think that five proxies total would be more worthwhile than the full Power 9 (though I did vote for either).  I think its a strong choice because it allows some players access to power, but still limits them in certain cases.  Also, it lets players such as myself run the one or two power cards we don't own/can't borrow and still throw in the finishing touches on certain decks.  Just think of things like Sligh or Suicide; somebody might need Sinks or Scrolls, but only would make use of one or two of the power9.  Though it rewards a few players for not acquiring somewhat easy-to-get cards, it broadens the field in general by letting people finish up decks they own, rather than just doing something stupid like substituting cards they are missing for random power9.  

But in the end, if we're playing T1, we're playing T1 and thats cool.  Yay T1.

Ugh, not a good date to pick...

Feb 2 is my birthday, so there's a chance I won't be able to come because :

1) I don't want to be gone all day on my birthday, and I doubt my mom would be very happy either.

2) I'll probably go out and do some birthday celebrating with some friends the night before, (since it's a Sat and we'll all have classes on Monday) and won't be interested in waking up early to make the drive.

Although, nothing is final.  Seeing as when I went to Gamemasters in NJ I decided at 11pm the night before, stayed out untill like 2am, stayed up on my computer untill 4am, and then drove the 3hour drive myself and played all day on about 4 or 5 hours of sleep.  And on a side note, I did completely sleep through my Monday classes after that one, so if I decide to go it looks like I won't be going to classes on the 3rd.  Oh well, this turned in to quite the long rant, I'm done now.

Also there are 3-8 place prizes, a ninth place consolation goblin game and two prizes for the highest non-top eight finishers who are 15 and under players

$15 covers admission, entry into main event and the 5 million side games/door prizes we run...everything from magic trivia to play of the day to a card throwing contest to a fifty rare raffele(sp?)...actually...it is $12 for any player who as never been to one of my events before and anyone can get $3 of for every new person they refer to my event(that person must put your name down on the reg sheet where it says "how did you hear about the tournament")

no...it's actually a huge mix...expect to see anything and everything...even a lot of extended decks turned into type 1 decks for the tourney and some type two decks with power

So any word on how this ended up?  There was a great turnout (58) and, it seemed to me, a really interesting field.  I had to drop after round 2 because I found out I had been "downsized" at work and just couldn't concentrate like I wanted to.
