Okay, I'm sure others will have additional input but I'll begin with my report.
The monthly Charleston tourney always has a fairly strong turnout, with numbers and level of players. This month was an exception in that the level was quite high. There 14 or 15 powered (as they needed) decks, with very strong win-potentials. Including:
MaskNaught AnkhSligh AnkhZoo Trix 3 Keepers Parfait 2 TnTs 3 Voids TurboLand PTJunk(ish)
Also: RectorGhoul (edited in) Reanimator (thanks Bill) Enchantress Clerics SuperishGro a Natural Order deck a cool Elf deck one other deck I missed somewhere
So, definitely a field that could've got cut to ribbons, depending on the matchups.
I went in, with some slight modifications to my Dark Keeper, expecting to hit discard quite a bit. So, I maindecked Timetwister, Stroke, Braingeyser, and Skeletal Scrying, with two Dodecapods in the board. Turns out I was running the AnkhSligh side of the universe, and didn't touch a single discard all day, except Duress. Oh, well.
Round One: face Mike M, Charleston, Natural Order
Mike and I have a tradition of starting off round one against each other. I was expecting Oath, as thats his traditional favorite, but ran into a lot of elves, and weird stuff I couldn't figure out (like Molimo, I think his name is) and ran the gauntlet of Stroke to get Scrying to get Braingeyser, Mind Twist, Abyss, yer dead. Game two went about the same way, with me STILL not seeing Oath or any identifying cards. He told me three rounds later it was a Natural Order deck.
Round Two: Shawn, Charleston, Zoo(Ankh)
Played Shawn before, with a very similar deck, and saw the usual field of Boas Mongeese and some burn, alonjg with some Watselandage. I ran the Skeletal, 'Geyser, Balance brokenness and won game one, fairly easily. Game two, my deck took a nap, and I had Balanced away all threats and lands when he recovered in two seconds. I got no answers from my deck, and had been forced to throw YawgWill away with the Balance (he Naturalized my Zuran Orb, to have zero cards). Game three, he Ankhs on the second and fourth turns, despite me never having seen them all match. I was a tad low on lands/mana, as I was forced to fetch under (thankfully one) Ankh. Still got no answers, and I can merrily say this was as merciful as my next two games would be.
Round Three: Dave Allen (not the Richmond one), AnkhSligh
Oh, boy! More fun, and faster than before. Dave had really opitmal draws, in a matchup where I have to draw optimally anyway. Pup, Monkey, Bolt, Cursed Scroll, PoP, Pop END. Game two was almost identical, but added an Ankh and a REB for my benefit. I'll put that one on my list as ways to have fun on Saturday afternoons. Ugh.
(1-2 matches, 3 whole points!)
Round 4 John O'Conner, Charleston, Enchantress
John is a very nice guy, and was working against the tide. With no dispuption, I countered freely, and Wished for Allay, and Tormod's Crypt completely sealed both games.
(2-2, 6 points)
Round 4 Nick, Superish Gro with Meddling Mages
This was an interesting match, as his build resembled A Beautiful Mind, minus Scroll Rack and Tax. I dropped an Abyss after Mana Draining a Seal of Cleansing, and kinda let him play some, while I built my hand up. I found Mind Twist, and Forced it through. Morphling finished the game. Game two, I sided in Scrying Glass, figuring I might not get to try it at all, and I wanted to use my sideboard for something besides Allay. He dropped a second or third turn COP Blue, which was interesting, but in my deck, I only use one Morphling at the moment, with Triskelion and Masticore being the other main kills. After a repeat of game one, I was Scrying his hand and seeing 2 Dazes, one Force, and one Foil (and one Swords to Plowshares). So, I got the Mind Twist all loaded up, and sent it. Daze, pay it, Daze pay it Foil, Mana Drain, FORCE, Mana Drain, but I am all tapped out, and the Morphling was exposed....but he had tapped all his Tundras. Boom, empty hand. What did he do? Draw a Brainstorm, and then an STP off it, and got the Morphling! I followed up with a HUGE Stroke, and Masticore and Mishra's Factory (off the Drains' 9 mana) and finished him off.
3-2, nine points, but didn't quite make the cut, despite playing two of the top-eighters, as my round four opponent dropped. Ah, well, it might not've mattered anyway, as John was 0-4 after our match.
THE FINALS:
Bryan (Statesboro GA) VOID Hill Redwine (Atlanta) TnT Dave Allen (Charleston) AnkhSligh Shawn (Chucktown) Zoo Todd Judy (Savannah) TnT Jesse Driggers (Charleston) Void Rudy (Charleston) Void Evil Bill (Charleston) Keeper
Yes, thats two TnTs and THREE Voids.
Round One: Dave plays Shawn (Sligh vs Zoo, with Ankhs), Hill plays Rudy (TnT vs. Void), Todd plays Jesse (TnT vs. Void--echo, echo, echo), and Bill plays Bryan (Keeper vs. Void)
TnT is a bad game for Void, and both of these go in favor of Todd and Hill. Dave's Sligh is outweighed by Shawn's bigger critters, and they're untargetable, and regenerate. Bryan is a pretty crafty up-and-comer who likes controllish black, and cannot be counted out, even when Keeper is rolling. I will say that during game two, it was an apparent lock, with Bill owning Light of Day AND Moat, on the board. However, Dystopia appeared and away went the problems. Another sure-fire use for Alter Reality, folks....Hopefully, these players can add their own input for the rounds.
Round Two: Todd faces Bryan, and Hill faces Shawn. Again, Void seems to be no match for TnT, with Welder ruining the best plans, and Shawn comes close (1 life) but Hill manages to eek out from under it, and its TnT vs. TnT in the finals. Weird, and explosive!
Finals: After game one (for Hill), both realized that the match would be decided in the first few turns, no matter what, as they are truly playing with dynamite. There is no time for recovery or defense, really, except holding back a Welder, to "trade" a threat. Todd manages to get two active Welders, and Tormod's Crypt, fairly sealing the game, and it ended within another turn and a half. Game three gets closed out nearly as quickly, with Hill plying out some big threats, and making a big mess.
Good job, and thanks Jon. My 'Pods never saw the daylight, and Scrying/Stroke/'Geyser/Timetwister in the main is cool when you can get away with it.
