Well, I had heard so little from the guys in Charleston this time around, I was getting a little worried our attendance might slip. However, we had 26 participants for the T1 on Sunday.
The weekend began with plans to have somewhat of a "Magic-fest" consisting of several friends at my house, beginning as early as Friday, and following up Saturday, then proceed to the store for the tourney on Sunday.
Turns out Andy (and Faye) couldn't make it, and Cullen waited to play taxi-driver. So, Hill got here Friday, and we began smacking each other around when I got off work, late Friday. Several cronies joined in, and we played until the wee hours (4 am)(Josh, thank yer Mom for us, for the use of the facility).
After some domestic bliss (read: chores for wife), we ended up inviting some of those same people over to my house to play, and eat my wife's wonderful ribs she had grilled (sorry if its too damn cold in most of the rest of the country for this sort of thing). Also, hugest props to Joseph (of T1 Clerics' fame) for the GIGANTIC assist in my chores for that day.
What did I anticipate from playtesting that night? I had three unfavorable matchups: MaskNaught (50/50), Fish (slightly worse), and Roadshow (worse than Fish). Last time, I had called the field almost perfectly, and sideboarded perfectly for the sea of Keeper and blackness that was Charleston on the 4th. The only problem was that I didn't see that half of the field, I got the "I hate Keeper" portion of Chuck-town.
Since I liked the build of my "Dark Keeper", I changed only three slots in the Sideboard. Divert was a second-chance failure; I tried it once last year, and this time, and it has never really worked for me. I'd just rather have Misdirection, or Meddle, or whatever it is. The two Dodecapods, I feel, are too iffy, and unproactive. So, they changed into a Keg, and a Scour. I used the Scour once, in the first game of a tournament in Charleston, against Oath, and everyone talked about it all day, even though it made no other appearances that I recall. Divert became Hurkyl's Recall, mostly for Roadshow, which I knew was making an appearance, and I just thought it might save me. Also not too shabby against 'Naught, Ankh, Cursed Scroll, etc.

Round One: Jesse Driggers, Charleston VOID
Game 1, He drops some early beats, Hyppie, and Shade, thanks to Duress and Dark Ritual, and I smoke the Hippie with something. Maybe a Diabolic Edict. We continue trading cards, and I try and get to something really useful. Unfortunately, a 8/7 Shade is almost always useful. I think he dropped Nether Void in here, somewhere on my way to zero.
Game Two, my deck goes hog wild, and runs away, stopping everything, and just handing me answers when I needed them. Hymn? Mana Drain. Critter? Abyss. LD? Teferi's Response. A spud could've won that game.
Game 3, was a little closer, but some timely plays worked in my favor. We trade a few cards, mostly critters and Edicts, and kind of stabilize around turn five. He is sitting at 3 Swamps, and I think I have four lands. He puts out a Hypnotic Spectre, and I am holding Abyss. So, I let it go, and drop the Abyss on my turn. He follows up with a Dark Ritual (I think) Duress, stealing my counter, and throws Nether Void down. I begin to think I am in big trouble, because the Abyss is *poof* and then I look a little closer. I have a Wasteland on the board, and Strip Mine in my hand, and Vampiric Tutor, and the mana to cast it, even with the Void. So, NP, Vamp for? Library of Alexandria. One of the other "useless" cards I was holding. I also had some other, random land. I Strip away a land, he drops a Mishra's Factory, I waste it, and for about five turns, he can't even drop a Mox. When he did, Annul reared its ugly head, continuing his mana problems. Soon, Library is working overtime, and I am waaaay ahead of the mana game. So much so, that when I finally draw a threat (I was being very cautious) I am hardcasting Force of Wills, under the Void. A spud might've lost that game.
Games, 2-1, Matches 1-0-0

Round two, Cullen Cox, Parfait par excellence, Charleston
Game 1, I've played Cullen about a zillion times, and I think this might been the best draw I've ever seen. Land, Mox Diamond, Sol Ring, Tax. Hmm, now that does suck. I should've Parised for a Godhand. Needless to say, by the end of turn two, he has six mana, Scroll Rack, and one land in play. So, I Time Walk, and something, and something else, and say done go. I've given him Tax-ability, but I had little choice with the hand I was holding, anyway. So, of course, has feels the need to Chant me, and drop Blood Moon, his favorite (and only) red card; I mean, the man literally HAS no other red cards. I shoulda scooped, but I was holding Balance and Cunning Wish, either of which woulda rescued me. Somewhat. Onto Game two: His karma has paid me back, as he has to Paris down to four cards, and it still sucks. My first draw required a Paris, but the follow-up hand rocked. I even got to use that Hurkyl's Recall; I left it in the board, but for some reason, had left one of my Wishes in my main, so the only useful card left was Hurkyl's. It allowed me to rescue my Triskelion when it was about to hit the farm! Despite that quick game, we have only nine minutes left (damn ponies are slow), so we decide to draw. Hell, its only Round two.
Games, 3-2 Matches, 1-0-1

Round Three, Mike M, Oath, I think
Games one and two are almost identical. He draws Sylvan, and hustles it out, and starts trading Sylvan life for cards, trying to outhustle my "draws-a-lot" build, and ends up so low that a single Triskelion finishes him in game one, and a Mishra's Factory lays waste to most of his life in game two. Mike loves playing me; since he started playing really good decks, I am something like 10-0 against him. 'Course he knocked me out of a tourney I was primed to win with a Stompy w/o Ephelants, about a year ago, so vengeance continues.
Games, 5-2 Matches 2-0-1

Round Four: Josh Kinner, MaskNaught, Savannah
Great! Right when I needed a win! For some reason, all the top players are sitting on the second row, and I am limping along, in the first row, and kind of wondering why. Well, Josh was part of the reason. He's 3-0 at this point, and stomping the snot out of people.
Game One, I get a terrific set of cards, all draws and counters, keeping him off-balance, with Edicts and Wishes right when I need them, including the Abyss, Keeping the Hyppies of my back. I think a Morphling finishes him (Josh has reminded me it was a Mishra's beat-down).
Game two, I get a near-repeat performance, only better, as I get to add a pair of Mind Twists, Ancestrals, time Walks, DTutors, (thanks to YawgWill) and seven sideboard cards, three of which show up in my opening hand (Keg, COP:Black, and Annul). I really did need the win.
Games 7-2 Matches 3-0-1, Ten Points

Round Five, John O'Connell
He and Bill and I had discussed the ID situation, in round four, and I couldn't afford to in round four, because a loss would put me out, and Josh was likely to at least get his tenth point in round five, from a draw, with another nine-point guy. Bill has never liked IDing since being bumped in Savannah, where a bunch of toughies made it tougher by IDing into the T8. But, hell, Bill, if you can't beat 'em, right?
Anyway, he and I draw, and discuss the day, and how our decks would line up. We play some loose games, with no SBing, and I feel I might have a slight advantage, but that is just arrogance, really. His deck has a LOT of counters, and Back to basics. Mine has a lot of recovery, and can operate under extreme conditions, but his is well lined up against me, so who knows.
Games: 7-2, Matches: 3-0-2 11 points.

Top eight: Weird.
Josh J, with Gay Fish is lined up against Mono-phid Greg
I am slated with (who else?) Josh with MaskNaught
John (URPhid) is to play annoying T2 GR Scott
Evil Bill (Sligh) is playing Shaun, whom he's already beaten, but I thought Shaun would've won, so I'm glad I was proven (somewhat) right, by Shaun beating Bill

John decimates Scott, who is lucky to escape with his life, and Fish takes monoPhid.  I am left to take my lumps from MaskNaught.

Game One: I take some early damage, due to Hyppies, and get some hand damage done to me, and somewhere in there, he gets an Illusionary Mask. I Balance, Edict, Edict and maybe Abyss, but both our hands are empty, and I'm at about four when he TDs a Dreadnaught. Wasn't that fun.
Game Two, I run away, with turns, and draws, locking him into the corner, and even making the topdeck of the day. I am about out of cards, and hold only Teferi's Response, land, and a Mana Drain, when he throws a 3-point Mind twist. I Drain it, knowing I might just have to sink it into my Monolith. Nope, just draw a Stroke of Genius, for eight, and proceed to win, quickly, and easily. Wish I could draw like that all the time.
Game Three: I get bent into shape by a turn one, Duress, Mask. I get some little help with my drawing, but he is quickly wrecking my decent hand, and I need to get the Hyppie off my back before *yank*yank*yank* hmm. All my answers are gone, unless I draw Balance...nope. Game over, go get another quarter.

So, after I started being an observer, Josh gets manhandled by GayFish, mostly because of counters, and Null Rods. John takes Shaun, thanks to some free cards (remember when we all realized Force of Will was broken? Why didn't Wizards when they made Misdirection?). John takes Gay Josh Fish, due to nice use of Kegs, and REBs, and Josh getting anxious. Good job, Dad.

Props? Cullen for always being on top of your game, and almost every obscure Fastbond ruling   Hill for playing an off-the-wall deck and annoying everyone with it. Jon for quizzing me about Time Vault, one of my favorite cards! Bill, for asking tough questions. Jesse for being a very good sport as my "Force, hard-cast under Void" story made its rounds.

Slops? Scott for being a

Just wanted to say thanks for a good tournament, first time I've attended Savannah's type 1.

Congradulations again to John for winning and keeping the steak going.

Also, I wanted to mention the Vampiric Tutor thing.  Although neither of us got the current wording right it seemed, the result is still as I called it.

Current Text:
"Search your library for a card, then shuffle your library and put that card on top of it. You lose 2 life. "

Loosing the life is not paid as a cost, so you can loose more life than you have.

Either way.  Had fun.  I metagamed for aggro and came up against control, so I've had better days.

Thanks for the report Zelif!
I was going to say something about enchant worlds...then I reread your post and all was well.
You should post that deck list (unless of course it's in the keeper thread and I'm too lazy to go look).

Well I managed to snag second With fish with a red splash for 4 razorfin hunter instead of cloud faries (I still don't know if I like this swap) and 2 fire/ice. I took the jist of a deck I saw somewhere on here, I am just not quite sure where. I will post a full decklist later on, or just wait for Darren to do it for me.

I didn't really expect to do that well this weekend. There isnt much random aggro around here, but it seems I always get paired with it when I need to get into the t8. By far, the mvp of my deck this weekend was the 2 md null rods and the 2 in the side. I rode those bictches to victory after victory just like I rode Ms. Dew the other night.

The metagame here exists of lots of people who have power, including team Tony Danza (todd & I) . However I was just curious as to how much havoc the rods would cause. Last tourney there was power in just about every match, and Todd commented how much the rods would just toss the fields' salad.

So I basically netdecked, tweaked it a little bit. I added cunning wish, which was a huge mistake. I never used It once, but it was in my old build and it always seemed useful (but its not). I have replaced it already with another rod in the main. Also of note is that I replaced my old stand-by of the unstables for curiosities, to try them out. There are no standstills in this build, in their place are the fire & Psi blasts.
I really hadn't put much thought into this deck, as I just wanted to play a few fun games on sunday.

I will edit this with a full decklist later on.

The day begins as I tell Darren that the first two games pretty much set the tone for the rest of the day. This was a crock of sheyyat as I would soon come to find out. I fortunately wasnt paired up with any savannah players early on. As a word of warning, I simply came out to have fun, so I remember very little of the details of the matches. If any of my victim... er opponents want to clarify things, then by all means, be my guest.

Match one Vs Brandon - The Rock.

I remember that fish sucks playing against random things like the rock or WW, so I head into this match looking at brandon's age and pretty confident that I was going to job to him. To make a long story short, I did.

I did win one game where I got a 1st turn manta rider followed by 3 lords. The other two games he got out 3 bob-towns early and key deeds when it hurt the most. I didn't commit too much to keep from being wrecked by deed, but when he was swinging with 3/3 trees and mongers the games were short ones.

0 -1 sweet.

Match 2 Vs Matt Brooks

I have played Matt quite a bit, and he has a weird underworld dreams deck. At first I kind of thought "yeah right" about it. But a few weeks ago I learned the hard way this deck can win the turn it gets insidious dreams. Ever since then I have been much more wary of it.  Game one he opens with land mox mox lotus BARGAIN. I breathe a sigh of relief because I have island, sapphire, rod + fish. He bargains too much and still sees no land. The fishies have their way with him.  The next match is kinda fuzzy, but I remember countering & mis-d'ing and swinging with fish.

1-1 thats more like it.

Match 3 Vs Cullen Cox Parfait

I always enjoy playing against Cullen. He is one of the best players I have ever seen and he has been in the game for even longer than I have. I knew he would be playing parfait and fish was surprisingly good against it.  The first game begins and I get an early rootwater out and strip him of a lot of threats. I play an early null rod also which really hurts the 'fait. I believe he eventually gets rid of both of those threats and gets out a story circle blue. Then he blows up, If youv'e played against parfait, you know the drill. Game two I get him to six and psi-blast and fire/ice for the win. Game three was epic and I had the lead, and I let him resolve some enchantment (aura of silence I think) when I had the rod out and force + blue in hand. I just simply wasn't paying attention as most of the others had finished and were fooling around. We get into a stalemate and time runs out. Anyway these games were more epic and closer than I described, They probably arent even in the right order. If you want the lowdown, ask cullen (he has a magic trapper-keeper, he knows the games better than do).

1 - 1 - 1 urrgh. It looks like it could be drop-city for the fish.

Match 4 Vs Mike Maujion Oath

By this point I am starving and a little sleepy from little sleep this weekend. I hope this match is over quickly either way.
Game one he opens with multiple moxes and nothing else. I play a savage conclave and let him go. I resolve a null rod the next turn, and beat with a rootwater shortly after, neutering him. game. We reshuffle and similar savageness ensues. I have a few key counters, but It seems his deck just wasn't working for him that day. The null rod was outstanding in this match also.

2 - 1 - 1 ok I have a shot If I win this next one

Match 5 Vs Hill Redwine - Roadshow

Unfortunately we can't draw into the finals, there must be a winner. This is a pity, because in the year or so that I've known Hill, I think the most of him. He has more cards than god also. Who need 3 sets of p9 ? I have playtseted with him this weekend and I know that the match was in my favor with those sweet-ass rods. I kinda feel bad knowing that he is about 80% out of the t8, but I figure thats my revenge. You see, Hill was the winner of Virginia states with TnT, and I feel he is pretty much responsible for workshops becoming outrageously expensive, after we traded our 6. So I show no mercy and thwack the hell out of him with fish while he is all but incapacitated by the rod. I make into the top eight.

3-1-1 phew

Match 6 Vs Greg Scott - BBS (borrowed from Hill)

Greg is a pretty good young player. He doesnt play all that often anymore, for a while he was going to be our little prodigy. But we all know that the wild life of magic players sometimes get the best of them. Chicks, booze, and cash. Greg has none of these, but high school is an ample distraction. Greg has gone 4-1 and is the top seed. Amazing for someone who has played type one only once before.

Game one - I get out manlands early and beat, baiting couters with fish. Then I rod and win quickly. Game 2 he sides in Bottle gnomes and plays them and beats me in the life race with his morphling on the table. Game three he gets more early gnomes, and I hack away. I get a null rod and he doesnt sac the gnomes. I continue to beat and he tries to sac the gnomes and cant with the rod out.  I feel that if Greg was more familiar with both decks, I could have been knocked out right there.

4- 1 -1

Match 7 Vs Josh Kinner - B/u mask

I play against Josh quite a bit as he is Darrens buddy and is around quite often. Although I kinda wanted Darren to win the previous match between Himself and Josh, so I would be playing Darren this round. Darren is a large reason that there is any type one scene, and his deck is absolutely beautiful, and interesting choice-wise (read jank). Darren never seems to place in the money despite being one hell of a great player. It always happens that he somehow doesnt place in the money. ever.
I've heard of the luck of the Irish, but I think Darren has the luck of the Jews.

Back to the match. In playtesting Josh would beat me if he gets combo early on. I win most of the rest of the time. In this game the null rods were crucial, as his only answer first game is one or two recoils, I believe. Game one goes on longer than It should, he gets a hippie out and I get two razorfin hunters out. I ping him down while beating with a factory.
The next game I get out two null rods early and feel bad for hosing him so bad. I win shortly afterwards. I am not sure if the description here was accurate, I cant remember it all since lack of sleep was starting to get to me. Darren was watching at this point, maybe he can fill in the blanks.

5-1-1

Finals Vs "Dad" Ur Ophidian

In the intrest of brevity, I will say that this matchup was an ass whoopin. Everything of mine got countered. Everything.
His multiple powder kegs and  fire & ice took care of my man-lands. Game two was more of the same. He made several minor mistakes like countering my time walk when I had no threats on the table and no cards in hand. He then had a masticore out and I had eventually gotten a Lord of Atlantis out, and I think He could have pinged during my end step and swung for the win next turn,  but he didnt. I think he might just be fairly new to that deck or not have tested vs fish.  Anyway I was happy with second place even though 2nd - 4 th place was pretty poor prizes. I got 4 FoW (valued 25- 30) and 3rd and 4th almost got 1 fetchland. But they upped it to two apeice. I am kinda let down by the prize, especially since there were 28 people there and the sapphire was only worth 110 - 120. But in the end I don't come out to play because of this prize or that prize. I come out to have fun with a lot of friends. And that is what happened this past sunday.

Sideboard
1 REB
1 BEB
1 maze of ith
1 teferi's response
1 psi blast
1 mana drain
1 annul
2 more I will add when I remember

2 propaganda
2 powder keg
2 null rod

my SB was terrible. The wish mas a mistake. It should have been a null rod.
If I play fish again it will have a typical fish SB.
my typical sb was
vs aggro - in 2 keg 1 maze
               out 2 rod  1 wish

vs control - out 2 psi blast
                in 2 null rod

I am still unsure how much I like curiosity over unstable. They both let you end the game quicker, one does it more directly. the other. Null rod is great. I am sure next time the field will be ready for the rods. Maybe I will test rootwater diver in anticipation of removal for the rod.

Here's the link:(from the "Post your Keeper decklist" thread)
Mine is last, so apparently, its the *ahem* last word in Keeper. The only changes this time are the metagame slots: Hurkyl's, Scour, Powder Keg, and COP Black.

Some pretty funny stuff in that Fish sideboard.
Can't wait to see the maindeck.

Rods rule.

D'ya ever side in the Mana Drain, the REB or the Teferi's Response?

As to fish sucking against random things like The Rock, Maze Of Ith helps.
