As I posted, rather late here, on Jan 30th there was the Collector's Corner Bi-weekly Power Card Tournament.

I had not been to a power card tourney in a while, so I decided to take a shot at it, using old faithful.

My deck list (shown at the bottom) was altered by only 2 cards, I decided to go the more color mana stable route, and yanked the wasteland, for a 3rd city of brass, and yanked the 3rd misdirection from the SB, for a 2nd BEB.

The 2nd BEB is primarily a move VS blood moon, as I hate going out like that, and I had reason to believe, that it may make an appearance... it didn't, but I still used them.

I rushed home from work got some craparific crappy "fast food" from Sonic... fast meaning over 10 minutes for our friggen food to show up.

I popped on over to Collector's corner, were I saw the store was packed with some of the regulars and some newer faces as well... but only 11 folks (including me) signed up.

Pairings were announced and I received one of 3 byes in the 1st round.

I used to love byes when I first started magic, but now they just make me antsy and nervous.

I would rather just get to the beatings.

After my 2nd round opponent finished his match (beating a survival deck... full English breakfast? don't know, just saw survivals) I mossied on up and had a seat.
-------------------------

Round - 2

Ward Allen, playing a B/Green aggro control with lotus emerald, and jet for power. I classify it as aggro control, because it has hymn duress, deed, and edicts... with boas, hippies.

It also runs TEMPTING WURM. I don't think Tempting Wurm is that good... but he is a 5/5... so um, whatever.

Game: 1 Ward wins the die roll, and plays first, I keep a hand with 2 drains, 1 plow, an impulse, and a monolith, with the rest lands... pretty good, but I am used to Ward getting dark ritual+ duress+ Hymn to destabilize me.

He doesn't, and I easily shrug off his shite, drain here, plow there, eventually geysering myself for like 12 or something... I counter a deed... but he top decks one with no cards in hand, after I had played a Morphling... and takes out a bunch of perms on my side of the board...

I tutor for Yawgwin and combo... he says "WTF does this thing do?" looking puzzled at the power artifact... I smile, and I say I will generate 2 thousand mana and, then I threw the stroke onto the table and said "Blam".

SB: -1 Mind Twist, -1 Morphling, -1 Counter spell, -1 Mana Drain, +1 Time twister, +1 Wheel of Fortune, +1 Enlightened Tutor, +1 Misdirection

Game 2: Ward agonizes over his 7 card hand and decides to mulligan, then groans over his 6 card hand, and does it again, then with 5 cards in hand, get Swamp + Ritual, = Negator. I kept a hand with all mana besides an impulse, because it has LOA, Academy, and solring

The Negator resolves, and I draw from LOA, he smacks me for 5, and I draw again, top decking a walk... but still no answer, so I walk, and draw from LOA for the 3rd time, and see counter spells... I impulse and my 4 choices are a. Fireball (but I have no red sources), b. Volcanic (oh the irony), c. Impulse, d. Ancestral (WE HAVE A WINNER)... I snag the ancestral, into a red source (fetch) and into a vamp, which I use to get the fireball.

I fall to 10 from the negator, 8 from the vamp, then 7 from the fetch, fireball his board away, and the game is basically over, he tries to land grant, and I counter it, hard casting a FOW... I combo like 6 turns later. “Blam”

-------------------------

Ward is an ok sport about it, so nothing to gripe about, we shake hands, and it is off to round 3.

-------------------------

Round - 3

Austin  (don't know last name) Playing a really strange Keeper variant fully powered. At first I thought that he was playing Smmemen's keeper, because it seemed like he had a lot of fetch lands, but he was playing an overall worse deck, one with shadowmage infiltrators (and just UBw)... it did have full power, and used Morphling as the primary kill though.

Austin is a relatively new player, and works at the premier store in our area, Collector's Cache.

Game: 1 We both keep our hands, and build till he is able to force threw a mind twist for 4. He leaves me with a geyser in my hand though, and he is tapped out, with 2 cards in hand, and had already used 2 FOWs and a mis-d, so I decided to go balls out and geyser for 10... well his last 2 cards are a mis-d and another counter.

He draws 10, and I can’t do shit, Morphling comes down on his end and I curl up and ask for the lovin'.

SB: -2 Plow, -1 Grim Monolith, -1 Power artifact, -1 Mystical, -1 Vamp, -1 Fireball, -1 Zorb, +4 REB, +2 Mis-d, +1 Chainer's Edict, +1 Time twister.

Game: 2 I play first, and we build up til he discards 2 counter spells, and I discard a chainers's Edict, and a Morphling, holding: 2 REB, 1 counter, 1 Misdirect, 2 FOW, 1 Time twister.

He tries to push through a mind twist for 4, and I misdirect, he Drains, I REB, he counters, I REB, he FOWs, I FOW (pitching FOW)... so he has no cards in hand and I have a time twist, I draw an impulse that gives me ancestral (which is why Impulse is so good, giving me an upper hand in the top decking war)... I eventually get a Morphling, and yawgwin a bunch of stuff.

Austin is a really good sport about the total card dominance that I expressed in this game, but I did geyser him for 10, so maybe he thought that we were even

Game: 3 He plays first, and get a fast start with land + mox= Time walk, + solring = masticore... MASTICORE???. I have a FOW, but I am cool with it, because I also have a Demonic, aimed at Mind twist, and he only has 3 cards in hand.

After taking the beats for 3 turns, I mind twist his hand away, and thus equals the end of the Masticore.

I have 5-6 cards in hand, and he has none, and I even have more mana.

I stripmine an Island, and start dust bowling his non-basics, while resolving important spells like ForF, and Ancestral.

I D.blow with the kicker his solring, and then Yawgwin, strip his last land, mind twist his hand, and lay Morphling. I even d.blow (w/no kick) his mox jet, leaving him with no perms in play, and no cards in hand.

I kill with Morphling with him having 1 land and 1 card in hand.

-------------------------

Austin and I laugh about him making a comeback, and shake hands, I really enjoy the good nature of Austin, and hope that he continues to play T1 consistently.

-------------------------

Round - 4, Finals

Pat Mckavenagh, playing WG Dragon, fully powered. Pat is a good player having played for many years, and owning just about anything that he has wanted (Magic wise) but he only plays combo decks, old school reanimator, WG Dragon, Stasis (with Cronatog, and Root Maze). I think that his ultimate dream, is to have a deck that can consistently get a turn 1 kill.

Game: 1 I get a lot of counters but no draw magic, I stop him from entombing 3 times, as he has more reanimation spells then graveyard stackers. He eventually is able to chant me, and combo, but has no kill condition, so it is a draw.

SB: -1 Balance, -1 Fireball, -1 Zorb, -1 Morphling, -1 , +2 BEB, +1 Tormod's Crypt, +1 Aura Fracture, +1 Enlightened Tutor.

Game: 2 I am able to get the grim/ power combo rather early, but cannot find a kill, so I twist his hand, to buy time, then a few turns later, I draw a stroke, and win. “Blam”

Game: 3 He get as really good start, Ancestralling himself on turn 1, and eventually misdirects a stroke to himself, how annoying. He combos, but there is again, no kill, so we draw.

Game: 4 He gets a turn 1 defense grid, which I cannot stop, but I am able to use LOA, to draw my 1 D.blow and kill it, then I stock pile my hand with counters.

He eventually has a crazy few turns were, he is able to abeyance me 3 times, me countering them all, then he is able to force through the combo, this time with a cunning wish for a searing touch, and kills me.

Game: 5 This game is so intense, it is indescribable. we both get 1st turn LOAs, and draw off them for a while. I am unable to find a way to kill the LOA (either a tutor, or mind twist, or strip, or dust bowl).

After like 10 turns of this, he goes balls out, tapping multiple Undiscovered Paradises to have a big counter war, that  eventually win, but had to pitch my power artifact, and deplete my hand considerably. His hand is depleted, as well, but he will be able to start LOAing sooner, because of the Undiscovereds.

About 3 turns later, with only 1 counter to back it up, I try to mind twist his hand for all but 1.

He has no friggen counter (and luckily no misdirection ) and I get all but a necro mancey.

After a few turns of me draw going, I get antsy again, apparently having smoked crack... I try to yawgwin a stroke upon his head, a few turns to early. He had 15 cards left in his deck, and I counted 25 mana, but I guess I wasn’t thinking about the 3 mana to activate the stroke.

So I stroke him for 22... when I realize that I had just screwed up royal, I had this sinking feeling, that there is no way I was going to win.

I had a time walk turn coming, and so I was able to untap, and at least have a few ways to try and counter his insanity.

Amazingly enough, from all of the counter wars that w had early on, were he had to pitch counter, he had only like 2 more counters in his deck, and so, to set up a perfect situation, I guess, he drops a bunch of artifact mana, and a land, and then discard a bunch of cards, and passes the turn.

By now there had been a crowd developing around us, and most of them were murmuring amongst themselves, mainly about how I screwed up.

I hate making mistakes.

So the next turn, he tries to abeyance me, I counter, he FOWs (his last one), so I add to the stack and crypt his graveyard, he adds to the stack and tries to necromancy, I allow it, but try to BEB the dragon on the stack of his coming into play effect.

He adds to the stack, and cunning wishes for (what I thought would be a REB) an Ancestral??? WTF he SBed it out?

Then he ancestrals me on the stack, putting me with 1 card left in my deck.

He has no more cards in hand, so I untap, and geyser him for 3... how anti climactic!!!!… Kind of a “Blam”… but  um… “BLAM”
-------------------------

So, we shake hands, and I collect my Minty UNL Time Walk.

-------------------------

Me and a few of the guys from the crown discuss how I screwed up the game, and that I was lucky that I still won... then we went up the road to another card shop that stays open late for the owners to play EQ till the wee hours. I play a few casual game.

------------------------

In retrospect, The 3rd City may have been a bad Idea, but (for me) the jury is still out.

I have recently been having reservations about what fetches do to your 2nd and 3rd layered spells vs. color mana.

I may fetch a tundra so that I can plow, but what about the demonic in my hand, were will I get the black mana for it?

If the fetch had been a city, I would not have any color issues, as long as I had a reasonable life total, and barring any waste/strip action.

It is usually easy enough to find that other mana color source, and I do like the thinning and shuffle effect that the fetches provide, but sometimes it is still difficult to find thecorrect colors needes at the same time, as a fetch cannot get a tundra and an underground at the same time. Right now I would rather sacrifice some life for total color consistency.

Thanks for reading my long arse report.

I don’t have any props or slops, sorry.

Well done.

I had intended to go, but also had told my wife I'd take her out.  I decided to go with the chick.

Maybe next time...

Rando: Thats cool,

Chick = good

Better then wooping up on a bunch of card geeks any day!

You made the right call.

I was looking for you to be there, and for Black Explosion (Dave) as well, but no luck.

Good report.

I still think your mana base has issues, but you won the time walk so all good

Was there ever a point where having a cunning wish would have helped? It seems like alot of these games went long, i.e. let you have enough mana to effectively use the wish, and having a wish could have helped you get something good vs. the keeper or dragon players to win a close game quicker or maybe even win a game you lost.

I like how you lobbied for impulse throughout the report, spread the love

In this specific tournament, if Dismanteling Blow had been a cunning wish, it would have been more versitile.

However, I am pretty satisfied with my SB as of right now, so I do not like the idea of reworking it just to play the wish.

I do not think that Cunning Whish is a bad card, I just don't like what it dictates to your SB, and that it adds 2U to the cc of whatever you tutor for.

It would have been nice to have in effect a REB/BEB/Misdirect/Edict/ET split card, even if I didn't fudge with my SB, but I am still keeping to what is tried and true, while testing other ideas.

Another idea I had was to replace the Mis-d and the counter spell for 2 brainstorms, but I decided it was better for now, sice I had no time to test, to just go for the extra counters as they gave me more of the universal answers that I was looking for.

Thanks for reading.

It seems like you missed the Wastes in that one match(where you had LoA vs LoA), and I wondered, did you miss the MD Edict at all?

Yes I did... That match, I really did miss it.

I wanted to hit the dustbowl really bad by turn 15 or so.

He has no way to deal with lands, so I really wish with my excess, I could have killed his Loa and started slowing him down.

I never missed the edict. It would have been nice to have it for backup, but overall Plow is just a better card.

It is cheaper, makes recussion not an option (unless Living Wish is involved) takes some of the pressure of the color requirements from my black mana, and can be used to buy a few turns if you plow your own creature (not as much of an option in my deck were I only have the 1 though )

Congrats on the win.  Its good to see a tourney report showing the Impulse and some specific reasons the Impulse is good.  Delicious.

How is the Dust Bowl?  I've been pretty pleased with it.

Game 5?  I have no idea how this should work, but I would have thought I was the winner at 1:0:2 after the third game.  Its definitely one funny thing about certain versions of Dragon though - the ability to draw game after game after game.

Yeah, I expected me to be there also. My URphiddian was all nicely packed with some main deck blood moons to make everyone playing those expensive decks (95 % of that metagame) sad. That, and I knew that there would be a fair amount of combo, since Spanky (Scott) would add to the combo people (starting to play type 1 with his future sight combo deck). I fell asleep 40 minutes before the tourney. Then I built Full english breakfast and won the Friday tourney.

Were there ANY decks without non-basics that weren't strips or wastes?

Good job Freddie... good thing for you I wasn't there!  Just kidding. Where are the props \ slops? THEY ARE MANDATORY!

P.S. To win, you must win two games. Whether that is 2-0 or 2-1-42 doesn't matter. The tricky part is whenever there is a draw, the person that went first that game get to decide again.

@Fishhead: In the report, I describe how there were 2 draws with WG Dragon, it is were the combo goes off, but there is no kill card.

There was also no way for either player to stop the combo, the game rules just take over, at that point, and the game HAS to become a draw.

It is probibly one of the most annoying parts of WG to me, is that if things are not going its way, it can just draw the game straight away, just to go to another game, and try again... repeat if nessecary!

-- About DustBowl... it was great most of the time... but I need way more testing with it.

I have been using it for a while now in combo keeper and I have liked it, but as far at it and a strip being the only ways for me to LD, I am not so sure about.

------------------------

@BlackExplosion: I think that there were 2 squirell Craft Decks there, Eric and Pierce... buth only playing 4 Savanah, for non basics, so blood moon, not so good there.

There was also Luke playing Mono Blue, so blood moon, not so good there.

And there were 2 guys playing green decks, mono green? I think 1 was stompy, because Austin was sweating about being at 1 life for a long time during our match, so blood moon, not so good there.

And finally there was a mono red Stacker variant so blood moon, not so good there.... oh crap heres the full list:

Blood Moon Good against:
Freddie: Keeper
Austin: Keeper-ish
Spanks: FS Combo
Pat: WG Combo
Mike Miner: Survival... FEB?

Blood Moon NOT Good against:
Ward: B/G Control
Josh: Stacker Variant
Luke: Mono Blue
Pierce: Squirels
Eric:  Squirels
Jess: Green, Mono Green?
Some Guy, that said he knew me from themanadrain, but was not regeistered: Stompy
Some Other Guy, U/G Oath

I guess that there was 13 people there... not just 11.

The guys at the bottom would either not care, or opperate just fine with only 1-2 lands neutralized.

Blood Moons could have been huge if you got the right pairings all of the way up, but could have also been total crap too.

It seems that the combination of Impulse-Keeper-with-Fireball and Freddie is unbeatable

I just fear that in order to convince people to play Impulse you would have to play for 1 year WITHOUT it and lose all ensuing tourneys (or else they can blame your skill) Wink

amongst themselves, mainly about how I screwed up.

lol, I hate it when people are gathering around the table where I play - I feel like a pupil eagerly watched by a crowd of teachers; also I think that I am playing worse in such a situation

It is really amazing that you still won that last game (with a Geysir for 3 - LOL!)

Let me skip the praise of your report and immediately ask some questions (I am not going to touch the delicate issues of Impulse and Fireball, so relax):

1. (SB) Why the Aura Fracture? Against B2B you have REBs, against Blood Moon you have BEBs and against Parfait you have a Keeper deck

2. (SB) It seems that you love Mis-D in all formats as a SB card, but are 2 really neccessary?

3. (SB) Is there a matchup besides Sui where you actually use Wheel?

4. Concerning your mana base: I think you REALLY should consider removing the Emerald for a Wasteland - I know it hurts (speed, Academy), but 0 Wastelands is even more insane than 0 COPs: Red

I mean, you can Impulse for Strip/Waste, but with only Strip+Dustbowl even 4 Impulse won't help against an early LoA

Another point: If you are afraid of Blood Moon, why don't you run (at least) 1 Island? I know that it messes with your colour-base, but running 1 with 4 fetchlands is really great (and immune to Wastelands as an additional bonus)

Your considerations about fetchlands are very important - sometimes you are caught between the Scylla of not being able to Plow immediately and the Charybdis of not being able to tutor 1 turn later - but my experience is that the overall colour-screw factor has been reduced since I am playing 4 fetchlands (and I play only 1 COB and 1 UP in addition)  - but it is kind of an art to know when (and what) to fetch

btw, KPfV (the guy I played in the mirror match) just plays 2 fetchlands in his Keeper deck and he seems to be happy about it

10. (SB) Why the COP: Red? (just kidding...)

This is so funny.

I am damn far from unbeatible, but it is usually not because I cannot find the correct cards, but because I screw up and stroke 3 turns to early!

I think I will just continue to be an advocate to impulse and do my best to sweep tournies with decks using its fast non restricted sexy tutoring to help me win, and hope that folks at least try it out... possibly perswade them.

Quote
Quote 1. (SB) Why the Aura Fracture? Against B2B you have REBs, against Blood Moon you have BEBs and against Parfait you have a Keeper deck

Wow, no one from themana drain has ever asked me this

Especially against B2B and Blood Moon, it brovides a non blastible (non REB, or BEB) way to succsessfully counter ever one of there non basic hating enchantments.

You are correct, that BEBs and REBs will be aimed at the same thing along the way, depending on the situation, but if you get an early fracture against either one of these strategies, their enchantments read "Target Keeper play sacrifices a land of their choice, at their leisure."

Currently I feel that (in my SB) there are no less then 4 untouchible slots:
COP Red
Tormod's Crypt
Aura Fracture
Enlightened Tutor

I feel that Enlightened tutor is one of the least appreciated, and most overlooked cards in keeper SBs.

It is just a virtual copy of any other SB or MD Enchantment or Artifact, and I am surprised when I see keeper players doubling up on enchantments or artifacts, and not considering this.

In conclusion (about Fracture) IMHO IF it resolves, especially early on, it stops the hate that with out, decks like those will usually not be able to win, since they depend so heavily on these haters, and their very powerful effects to win the keeper matchup.

Quote
Quote 2. (SB) It seems that you love Mis-D in all formats as a SB card, but are 2 really neccessary?

I do love misdirection, it is a useful SB slot versus:
1. The Mirror
2. Burn
3. Mono Blue
4. Sui
5. (this is local for the most part) Squirel Craft.

Being able to SB 1-2 Misdirections versus these matchups are invaluible.

I feel that 1 would probibly work, and I could open up that last slot, but I think that there are few SB slots that are goingto be as well rounded and suitible for as many matchups as Misdirections.

Quote
Quote 3. (SB) Is there a matchup besides Sui where you actually use Wheel?

Nope, not off the top of my head... but I do't run any other SB slots specificly against Sui, so I am cool with this.

Especially in a power card tourney, were sui is going to make a larger appearance then at one of our regular aggro filled tournies.

I could forsee, maybe SBing Wheel against a deck packing 4 bloodmoon, since it is a rather cheap card drawing spell, that I can cast under the moon... but I have not tested this.

Quote
Quote 4. Concerning your mana base: I think you REALLY should consider removing the Emerald for a Wasteland - I know it hurts (speed, Academy), but 0 Wastelands is even more insane than 0 COPs: Red

I cannot dispute this with you... I personally love a keeper with a heavy LD element, but I was trying to go for a more combo-ish deck for this tourney... and I cannot say that the lack of LD was to horrible, but I did miss it!

Quote
Quote I mean, you can Impulse for Strip/Waste, but with only Strip+Dustbowl even 4 Impulse won't help against an early LoA

You are completely correct... But I could also try for my own LOA, or a Mind Twist, to get them under LOA range as well... so although, I am currently analysing were I can fit more LD in the mana, I do at least have 4 ways to neuteralize/ play parity with an opponents LOA.

Quote
Quote Another point: If you are afraid of Blood Moon, why don't you run (at least) 1 Island? I know that it messes with your colour-base, but running 1 with 4 fetchlands is really great (and immune to Wastelands as an additional bonus)

This is as well, not a bad suggestion, but I have just never been a big fan of a single island or 2 in keeper.

I see Zherbus use it, and some of his clones, and that cool, more power to them, but about 80% (or so) of the time, a dual is superior to an island... solidifying my color base is way more important to me the vast majority of the time.

Blood moon is not popular in my area, right now, but even if it was I am unsure that I would run any islands.

I have (very occasionally) considered running a single riftstone Portal in my SB, against blood moon, to get it into my graveyard.

But this was back when I ran a d.blow, a disenchant, an aurafracture, and a tranquil domain as enchantment killers.

It has never been used, but I had disscussed it on a whim.

But I doubt I would use it, since although it may be good versus bloodmoon, it is ASS versus everything else, other then getting WW for moat

Thanks for the questions, I appreciate the feedback.

I agree about solidifying the color-base early in the game, but in the mid-game against decks like MonoU that you know will pack BtB I love fetching an Island.  I'll even go for the Island early at the expense of a color against decks with Blood Moon since I consider having that blue mana vital.  Besides, the opponent will provide me with a nice set of Mountains so I dont need to get Volcanics.  Wink

Have you ever tried cutting an impulse or another card for Flash of insight? it is 2 cards and if you have grim/power combo you can search your whole deck.  Good Report

I did take a gander at that card, but i think that if I have the combo, I will already have won, or will in short order.

The reason that i use Impulse is so that I can pluck the best of my next 4 cards, for just 2 mana, and i think that is were Flash of insight is stricktly an inferior card.

I am not doubting its worth if you just stacked your entire deck, if you had the mana, but I think that it would be to much of a fringe card.

thanks allot for the imput, and the comments fellas.

Maybe I should ask my first question more precisely: Why do you STILL play Aura Fracture?

I know that it was more or less a must in the 4 FoF-mono-U era (at least since the day that CooberP introduced this tech), but is it really neccessary nowadays?

I am asking, because I have not used this SB card since June (although it has been in my SB most of the time), except for a single game (and this was against Parfait), and I just wanted to know how often you really use it.\n\n

I think that list was just to cover up the fact that your pee-pee shriveled when I mentioned blood moon.

I think that blood moon will help me against the decks I plan to see in the later rounds of the tourney. As such, if I can make it past the stompy \ sui decks in the opening round or so, I'm golden. Worst-case-scenerio, I draw ineffective blood moons, but use my uber-tech deck and mad skillz to compensate so well my opponent thinks I'm cheating.

Also, I have never lost a match to a mono-black deck of any sort (Void, sui, pox) while playing URphiddian. BLAM! (But I've never played against 9 land with it.)

@ Big Blue: I think that Aura Fracture has become less effective then it was, but it is still highly effective, and an important cad in the BBS and Bloodmoon matchups.

It is because just 1 of these cards can win the game for the person casting it.

Just look at all this nonsence smack that Black Explosion is spouting

MD Bloodmoons... blah blah.

It is shit like that, were aura fracture wil come in handy, and I think that having access to just 1 of a card that hoses certain strategies is a good fallback.

It might not always be nessecary, but it is there for the matches that it will be nessecary in.

It can potentially come in against void, and survival as well, as BBS Enchantress, SquirelCraft, and Bloodmoon.
