Another Friday tourney at Dreamer's in St. Louis Park, MN.  Due to the opening of the new matrix movie and most likely other reasons the field was very small, only 9 players.  Among these were: GAT, Ducktape, Star Spangled Slaughter, Fish, Suicide, Orc Sligh, Elves, Stasis, R/G Beatz.

I was the R/G Beatz, my decklist for reference

Mana (26)
        4 Wooded Foothills
        4 Taiga
        4 Treetop Village
        4 Wasteland
        4 Mountain
        3 Forest
        1 Strip Mine
        1 Sol Ring
        1 Mox Emerald

Burn (14)
        4 Incinerate
        4 Lightning Bolt
        4 Cursed Scroll
        2 Chain Lightning

Creatures (14)
        4 River Boa
        4 Kird Ape
        3 Call of the Herd
        2 Grim Lavamancer
        1 Gorilla Shaman

Other (6)
        4 Naturalize
        2 Maze of Ith

Sideboard (15)
        4 Artifact Mutation
        4 Red Elemental Blast
        4 Scald
        2 Maze of Ith
        1 Hull Breach

It continued its streak of incredible reliability again.  1 Mountain should be a Mox Ruby (I couldn't find one).  I've finally taken Rancor out of the deck, and i like how the deck played without it today.

Round 1 Fish

I love fish! It's so fun to play against, but this one wasn't quite optimal.  It was our Ducktape players side deck and wasn't optimal.  I took both games with 18 and 17 life respectively.

Games 2-0 Matches 1-0

Round 2 Chris with SSS

This matchup is so much worse for him than it should be.  I took a hit or 2 from his mage, but i eventually win this with a combination of COTH, Treetop Village, and Cursed Scroll dealing nearly all the damage.  Game 2 had his turn 1 Fact countered, and left him short on mana.

Games 4-0 Matches 2-0

Round 3 Steve with GAT

I get paired down and play against GAT which had lost to Ducktape last round.  Steve is feeling down after his last match and doesn't feel like losing to my teched out deck.  We play, he smashes first game, as he should with a massive Psychatog.  Kill around turn 4.  Game 2 had him with no answer to Scald.  After the second one gets countered by counterspell his life is not high enough to possibly make a comeback.  Maze of Ith seals it.  Game 3 was nearly close, but because Psychatogs die to Berserk his Time Walk turn was wasted.  Grim Lavamancers deal the last 4 damage necessary.  I was able to bolt a Dryad with Red Blast backup during this match.  Take heart burn players, it does work.

Games 6-1 Matches 3-0

Round 4 Jon with Ducktape

He beat the Elves (???) deck 2-1 (???) and we split for the top 2 slots in top 4.

Games 6-1 Matches 3-0-1

We play some games for fun, me with zombies, him with aluren.  It was 1-2 or 2-1 i can't quite remember.  We do some trading and wait for the top 4 to be listed.

Round 5 Semifinals Orc Sligh

He'd beat slaughter to make top 4.  My waste effects combined with burn allow me to take game 1 without trouble.  Game 2 he sees no mana and I win handily.

Games 8-1 Matches 4-0-1

Round 6 Finals Jon

The prize is 20 for first, 16 for second.  The owner, Jason Webster tells us we can split or play for the money.  I consider it, and Jon wants to split the cash like normally happens.  I owe sleeves to a friend, so i really want the extra couple of bucks so I tell him I'd like to play.  Jon doesn't think he'll win so he just withdraws to save a few rating points.  We play the match out for fun and I win game 1 with a nice combination of 'mancers, burn, and Call tokens.  Game 2 is over on turn 3 after i Artifact Mutation his turn 2 Tangle Wire and turn 3 Smokestack.  That's how you beat Ducktape folks.

Hopefully James will finally come back and let us crack at his 1898 rating.  Next week maybe we'll get around 20.  Anyone who lives in the Minneapolis area is welcome to come.  Entry is $5 and it is a very well run tourney.  Jason usually tacks on an extra round so we get a little extra play time.  Its a fun time for everyone!

I see the increase in Maze of Ith and Scald in your SB from previously.  These seem to be the key for ya eh?

I was out watching the Matrix last night, but I think the hockey game made a difference, although Jason has a TV in the back... The ESPN incident was pretty funny .

What was the "orc sligh"?

Why incinerate over chain lightning?

Congratulations!

Quote (Kheoinn @ May 17 2003,21:13)Why incinerate over chain lightning?
Because:
- it's an Instant
- it can kill regenerators
- there is no drawback against red opponents

Why would you play Chain Lightning over Incinerate?

Thanks for the report, BTW.
