Hello everyone! This is my first post here, so I guess I'll introduce myself. I've been playing magic since the beginning of revised, but I've quit twice, after Mirage and again after torment. Just a few days ago I decided to get back into magic. I've been looking for type 1 in my area (I live near DC), and I haven't been able to find anything. So I emailed Carl and he sent me a link to a thread on these forums. A few people responded, and I was rather surprised at the genial nature of their posts, so now I have decided to become a member here. Oh, and although English is my first language, I speak Russian, some French, and I'm learning Hebrew.
So, now that I'm through with the intro, my question is as follows: is type 1 declining everywhere? I've lived here for all my life, so I knowk that the magic scene consists of basically two stores (Dream Wizards and a WotC store), neither of which has ever held a type 1 tournament to my knowledge. Is type 1 absent only in my area, or is it dwindling slowly away everywhere?
(Oh, I use the "angry face" on all my posts. It's a tradition started long, long ago.)

Sanctioned Type 1 was dead by the time Urza's Saga showed up, to the best of my knowledge. As for unsanctioned T1, here(around Pittsburgh) just about every store I know(except Game Masters) runs unsanctinoed T1 events quite often. Only a few are true type 1, though, due to a lack of Power cards.

I wouldn't say T1 is dead, but its certainly stretched over long distances. I have heard that your particular area is a low spot for t1. Whereas you can probably walk to a store that supports type 2, expect to drive to a store that supports type 1.
A car is more important in Type 1 than any of the power nine.

I'll have to quote you on that...
How do I go about getting registered here? I read on the mainpage that "applications are not being accepted," but this is my first day at the first forum i've seen that has some sort of application process. I would really like to register, but this seems impossible at the moment...

Well, applications aren't being accepted right now. Admissions will open sometime, unless theres some reason for me to make an exception which is rare.
This is the first forum that has an application because this is not a public forum, rather than a private forum.

Its all a question of relativeness. Type I was almost dead already but compared to itīs all-time-low it is rather healthy now and it is going uphill.

Among players, T1 is probably still popular enough, or so the latest convention has shown me around here (Netherlands, Europe). The T1 cards were what people were after...
Anyway, as far as sanctioning goes, most t1 tournaments have a big span, and I myself drive from 150 - 200 kms just to attend a T1 tournament with a group of friends from close-by. Wether or not T1 is viable, probably depends on how many people close-by are playing it (say, a 25km radius). If T1 is popular there, I'm sure some store or judge would make an effort to organise something, since a well known cardstore around here will start organising t1 and t1.5 tournaments close-by very soon.
Also, the dutch T1 event in Castricum is breaking record attendance after record attendance, so that must mean something.
Just because wizards doesn't support T1, doesn't mean it is dead. It just doesn't feed their greedy minds and wallets, and that's why they don't run high-level events in the format.

If you live near DC, check out www.richmondcomix.com for monthly sanctioned Vintage tournaments. We usually get between 10-16 people depending on the month and the power level is fairly high.

I'm italian T1 champion of 2001/2002. T1 is not dead, the growing prize of p9 shows that t1 is still very played. In italy we create a league for t1 players, named oneone. Each sunday there is a t1 sanctioned DCI tournament, with a mox or an ancestral beta for the winner, and this league of player is planning to pay the plane ticket to origins for the best players of t1 season. That's very nice. I'm still thinking about asking a store run by friends of me if they'd be willing to sponsor at least part of the trip to Origins, so maybe me and a few friends can attend. That is if we got time in our school roster
