Author Topic: Tournament at UA  (Read 1912 times)

(Background: Been playing Magic since last August (started college). Most of my cards come from my brother whose played since Beta)

I've thought of doing a tourney report for a while now. This happened at UA on 2/4/03.

I've been playing Parfait for a couple of months now (Been playing Magic since I started college, which was last August). No complaints with it other than the fact I have nothing but an uphill battle with aggro. Humility and Moat are awesome, and weren't the problem (duh). Rather, Wrath of God didn't seem to be pulling its weight. I couldn't tutor for it; I couldn't reuse it (unless Soldevi was in); and my opponents would sometimes come back if I couldn't get a Mesa out quick enough. I wanted something tutorable, reusable, and something that my opponent would have problems recovering from.

As I had done horribly last tournament, Urphidian seemed a good choice. But that morning I got on TheManaDrain.com and read WhiteTrash's Tournament report. Abyss? In Parfait? This is what I had been searching for! At first I thought it had poor synergy with Mesa, but thanks to Jebus, and talking to others, that concept was quickly refuted.

So this is what I put together:

4 Land Tax
3 Scroll Rack
2 Claws of Gix

1 Blood Moon
1 Tormod's Crypt
1 Balance
1 Enlightened Tutor
1 The Abyss

2 Humility
2 Story Circle
2 Replenish
2 Aura of Silence
1 Seal of Cleansing

4 Argivian Find
4 Orim's Chant
4 Swords to Plowshares

2 Sacred Mesa

1 Sol Ring
1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Diamond
1 Black Lotus
1 Strip Mine
1 Serra's Sanctum
2 Wasteland
1 Swamp
1 Mountain
13 Plains

SB:
1 Wrath of God
1 Karmic Justice
1 Moat
2 Pariah
1 Blood Moon
1 Jester's Cap
2 Tormod's Crypt
2 Abeyance
1 Aegis of Honor
1 Aura of Silence
1 Seal of Cleansing
1 Aura Fracture

Card Choices:
Main deck is pretty standard (except swamp, abyss).

As to my sideboard, I never know what I'm going to run into. I dropped Soldevi Digger because it seems like I never have the
mana for it. I ended up putting Aegis of Honor in its place. One of my better moves. The tournament was unsanctioned, but treated as sanctioned (no proxy, etc.) but without a real timelimit. If its felt the game has gone on to long, then 5 turns to end it, or its a draw.

Cost $9 (Buys prizes)

Prizes:

1st - UL Mox Ruby
2nd - 2 English Mana Drain
3rd - Morphling
Rogue - Foil Rogue Kavu

I did a little testing with Dennis (my brother). Definitely handling aggro better now. At 1pm, Me, Tina, Dennis, and Geoff headed over to the Burke dorm. 42 people showed up, some skipping class. We all car pooled to Scott and Racheal's house. Then all we did was hand in our decks and deck lists. Pairings go up.

Round 1

Brian. Playing what he plays best. Non-Fetch Stompy

Game 1

He wins the dice role. I have to mulligan. My next hand had Black Lotus, Abyss, and Humility in it.  He starts out with a land grant, Elvish Spirit Guid, dropping 2 skyshroud elite. I drop plains, Lotus, Abyss. Hey, I'm liking this card already!
Brain doesn't bat an eye. He sacs one of the Elites, then drops a Quirion ranger, and rancors the Elite. Nothing for me other than drop a Claw. He sacs the Ranger, drops a Druid Lyrist, rancors the elite again! swings, passes the turn (I'm at 12). I pull topdeck argivian find, target Lotus, play it, then play Humility. Brian threatens to kill me. He sacs the elite, collects his Rancors, puts em on the Druid and swings for 5. I get Land tax into play. After that, it goes me getting cards,
pumping out the ponies, game.

SB out: 1 Blood Moon, 1 Tormod's Crypt, 3 Chants
SB in:  2 Pariah, 1 Moat, 1 Karmic Justice, 1 Wrath of God

Game 2

I get a first turn Mox Pearl, Land tax. He pumps out the creatures, I hide behind Story Circle, recalling it with Argivian
when he Naturalize's it. I swords and Pariah some creatures. I tutor for the Mesa. Next turn I Humility, go for the win.

Matches: 1-0-0   Games: 2-0

So far, so good. The Abyss gave me a win where the last three times I play him, Brian always won first game. On to the next round.

Round 2

A guy called Randy playing Sligh w/fetch lands

Game 1

I win the roll. I lay some lands and get Land tax and Scroll rack and take damage as he drops a Pup and Cadets backed by burn. I tutor for Story Circle, then hide behind it like the coward I am. I Balance, clearing the board of creatures,
sacrificing 1 of my lands and 2 cards. He drops a Cursed Scroll, I drop a Seal to disenchant. He keeps it up the pressure, getting me down to 4 by saving cards, keeping his land count low, getting the creatures out, and forcing me to expend mana elswhere (keeping Scrolls off the table, forcing me to argivian and Replenish for Aura). I scroll rack into Serra's Sanctuary, with 2 Land taxes, Story Circle, and Aura out. Down comes Abyss without the fear of dying, leaving me 6 white mana open (he had 3 creatures, 2 cards. I can stop it all!). I keep the Cursed Scrolls off the board, watch the Abyss chew up his creatures, and after a while I have Mesa resolve for the kill.

SB out: 1 Humility, 4 Orim's Chant, 1 Tormod's Crypt
SB in:  2 Pariah, 1 Moat, 1 Karmic Justice, 1 Aegis of Honor, 1 Wrath of God

Game 2

I had to mulligan. Dang it, now freaking way I've got this. And I was right. He starts out strong with a Pup, followed by another pup and cadet. I had 2 land and Pearl mox, I pariah his one of the pups. He chain's me, takes the damage, swings on in. I lay a land, play mox diamond, Argivian for Pariah, pariah his other pup, lay aegis of honor out. Lays his third land, cursed scroll comes into play, swings, incinerates me, destroying his pup. He rides the scroll and cadet in for the win.

Game 3

I shuffle like its nobodies business. First turn land tax (not that it does anything till later, he's careful to keep from activating it). Third turn Abyss. Some burn comes my way. Then I got my scroll rack out, got my tutor, then tutored for
Aegis. Anarchy rears its head, I was holding a Replenish for this, but not before I go down to 2 life. Nev disk hits the
table, Argivian for my seal to destroy it. After some time of play, I finally got Mesa for the win.

Matches: 2-0-0  Games: 4-1

I got lucky. Really, really lucky. I don't know if its me, but I never seem to have much luck against sligh.

Round 3

Dallas playing UrPhidian. Not a fun matchup for me. Dallas is the reason I run Claws instead of Zuran Orb these days.

Game 1

He wins the role. Drops a first turn LoA. Fun. Land, Mox Pearl, Scroll Rack for me. He draws, draws from the LoA, plays an
island, turn. I rack for 6, get the Land Tax, try to play, its Forced. Game goes on for a while, I get a Replenish to resolve
that brings Humility into play, he Cunning wishes for a Capsize, pops his Powder Keg for 0, destroying my Claws, Capsize's my Humility, drops Morphling, draws a card from ophidian. I use my last Chant, he Mana Drains it. Drop the Humility, its Mana Leaked. He ancestral's, then Morphling goes in for the kill. (Incidently, he used Fire/Ice to finish me)

SB out: 1 Blood Moon, 2 Story Circle, 1 Tormod's Crypt
SB in:  1 Moat, 1 Karmic Justice, 2 Abeyance

Game 2

This hurt. He even had to mulligan, and still went nuts on me. First turn land mox, Time Walk. Second turn Phid. He counters
my Land Tax. Try to get Mesa out, countered. Draws for a bit, I try for Humility, he counters. He drops another phid,
merchant scrolls for Ancestral, manages to Force 2 Chant's to mana drain my Moat. I Argivian for Humility, then have it
countered when I try to play it. Drops Morphling next turn for the win.

Matches: 2-1-0  Games: 4-3

Got some good advise after the match. Dallas sat down and helped me understand some plays that would have been better for my overall game strategy.

Round 4
A guy named Jason playing Sui

Game 1

I get a Mox Diamond, Land tax. He plays a swamp, Rit, Negator. I play a land. He plays a land, sinkholes my plains, then swings. I send the Negator farming. I tax, play mox pearl, land, play scroll rack, rack, play black lotus, tap for white, play Argivian find, get lotus, play lotus, tap lotus for w, play humility. Thats about it. I threw down Abyss a couple of
turns later. Mesa for the win.

SB out: 1 Blood Moon, 4 Chants
SB in:  2 Pariah, 1 Wrath of God, 1 Moat, 1 Karmic Justice

Game 2

He drops a Mox jet, swamp, rits, then puts a Hippie and Planar Void into play. Ouch. I drop land, Mox Pearl, Scroll Rack. I lose some cards to the hyppie, and life  to Wretched Anurid (Since when does Sui play this? Well, it is new). I Wrath. He drops a Negator. I draw crap. I go down to 9 life from the Negator. I scroll for 3, get argivian, plains, Story Circle. I Argivian for the pariah in my graveyard, untap, play it on the Negator. The words that came out of that boys mouth! He concedes.

I've never gotten to pariah a Negator before. K-Run wasn't kidding.

Matches: 3-1-0  Games: 6-3

Round 5

Jordan, my personal bitch, playing B/G Nether Void. I hadn't seen his newest incarnation of Void. (He had been playing mono black)

Game 1

He wins the roll. First turn Bayou, duress, stripping me of my Land tax. Dang it! I lay a land, Orim's Chant him. He drops a
snow-covered swamp. I lay another land, play Sol Ring to pay for scroll rack. He opens a can of whoop ass, drops a Llanowar Waste, Hymning me, then dark ritual to pump out a Hippie. I draw land tax, play it, scroll for 2 (taking burn from sol ring), get a StoP and a land. He  swings with the Hippie, I send it farming, he then drops Deed. Shit. I Tax, getting my mountain, then draw seal of cleansing. Thank you whatever god is looking out for me. Down comes the seal. Bye bye Deed. Kenny untaps, drops a Mishra's, sinkholes one of my plains. I tax, lay a plains. He untaps, draws a card, swings with the Factory, then Demonic Tutors for something. At end of turn, I Rack, finding tutor. I untap, tax, play tutor, getting blood moon. Play my mountain, play Blood Moon. After that, it was a cake walk. He couldn't Pernicious, nor deal enough damage to kill me. Ponies

lead the way!

SB out: 4 Orim's Chant
SB in:  1 Karmic Justice, 1 Blood Moon, 2 Pariah

Game 2

He lays a bayou, duress me taking one of my land taxes. What is it with him and land taxes? Land, play land tax. He lays a wasteland, Naturlize's the tax. Grr. I play a land, and the mox I just drew. He plays a swamp, and a Hippie hits the board. I draw (wow, an Aura...) and pariah the Hippie. At this point Kenny start laughing. He plays a Factory, then Naturlize's the Pariah. Bastard. Swing, and I'm stripped of a Humility. He demonic tutors, then passes the turn. I draw a scroll rack, play it. Then I rack for 3, getting strip mine, sacred mesa, and land tax!. I take a chance and strip his Factory, thinking he tutored for Void He attacks with the hippy, and after a stange little dance I did for luck, pulls the sacred mesa. He then drops a shade. I draw the the Abyss, play land tax. He attacks, and I'm hurting. At my turn I tax, then draw a StoP. I then scroll for 2. I get a StoP and find. His turn, he attacks, I swords his creatures, then he Hymns me. I land tax, getting swamp, mountain, and a plains, and draw... a Blood Moon. I play Moon, then pray as I drop it. Nope, no Nutralizes. After that, I simply get my mesa while my wasteland took care of his other factory, Tormod's Crypt when he tried to Yawgmoth's Will (He forgot it was on the table). Mesa for the win.

Matches: 4-1-0  Games: 8-3

Heck, I'm happy he switched, Dystopia is a bitch. BTW, its a good thing I stripped his Factory. He had Demonic Tutored for
Void. w00t. Incidently, he runs snow-covered swamps with regular swams because he uses Tainted Pact. Different.

Round 6

Summer, playing Grow. Summer is on the Track team with me (I shot put, she does high jump), and people get hurt when she loses. I should know, I have the bruises to prove it.

I hate Grow. And she has a 6-0 record. I think if I can get her to ID, I'll get into the top 8. I promise to run her laps on

Thursday if she ID's with me. She agrees.

Match: 5-1-1  Games:

I learned bribery is a good thing. Yeah, she wants me.

Top 8:

Dennis (TnT)
Summer (Grow)
Dallas (UrPhidian)
Randal (Growatog)
Alice (Dragon)
Jordan (B/G Void)
Wilbur (Pandeburst!?)
Kay (Parfait) w00t again! I'm in!

The funniest part about this was nobody in the whole tournament ran keeper.

Randal, playing Growatog. I'm a bit worried about this, as Randal is good player.

Game 1

I had to mulligan twice. He Forces my Land tax, get a Dryad out, and slowly kills me over 5 turns as I don't draw a single
land. (He did Daze my StoP)

SB out: 1 Story Circle, 1 Aura of Silence
SB in:  1 Tormod's Crypt, 1 Blood Moon (I didn't like this, but everything main deck was so great)
Game 2

I open up with plain, land tax. He drops a Tropical. I draw. He opts, at my end turn, then I chant at his upkeep. He plays an
Underground Sea rather than discard. I tax, then play plains, Mox Diamond, Karmic Justice. He though long and hard about
this, then Mana Drains it. Turn. He FoF, taking the pile with a land and Tog in it. He plays a land, plays dryad, turn. Draw
into a Chant, try to StoP (Forced by Gushing for it) the dryad. I take some beatings for 2 turns, Dropping claws, got a
Balance. He gets Tog into play, and Dryad is pumping up. I get lotus, he only has 2 mana untapped of 4, so I take a chance. I have 6 mana (3 plains, 1 Diamond, 1 sol ring) and lotus, so I play Chant, its Forced, I try to resolve Pariah, its
counterspelled, then I drop the Lotus and Balance, then tap lotus to Claw away all my land. Randal looks at me, sighs, and it resolves. Some drawing goes on, until I try and resolve the Abyss. Its Dazed. I get a land tax into play, then start to get
worried when he gets Tog on the table. I try to StoP it at his end turn, but he opts and Drains it. I play my fourth land,
and drop Story Circle naming blue. He allows it, untaps, and Naturalizes it (I hate this damn card), I tap for white, he
passes the turn. I get scroll rack, play it, rack for 4, FINALLY get one of my Crypts, play it, destroying his grave. He
beats on me with Tog for a bit until I Replenish. He concedes.

Game 3

Your about to read probably the most broken play I made the whole tournament. He plays Polluted Delta, turn. I draw a plains.

I played a plains, cast Orim's Chant. Randal, having good cause (this is type 1) looks at me funny, then says "You have Lotus and Blood moon, dont'cha?". I just grinned. He sacked his Delta, got an Underground Sea, cast Opt, sighed, Force of Willed the Chant. I then dropped the Lotus, named red, and played the Blood Moon. He shook my hand. First turn win with Parfait!

Summer again, playing Grow. Sigh, dang it, why me.

Game 1

Though Growatog is similar, I feel Super Grow has superior cards. Plus regular islands do help it out. This game wasn't all
that great. I resolve Land tax, but never use it. I get my scroll into play, but everything that could save me, Humility,
Enlightened tutor, Balance, is countered. Dryad for the win.

SB out: 1 Tormod's Crypt, 2 Story Circle, 1 Blood Moon
SB in:  2 Pariah, 1 Moat, 1 Abeyance

Game 2

A stronger showing on my part, we both play some lands, she does some deck minipulation and drawing with a ophidian after I StoP her Dyrad. I Orim's, trying to force Moat into play, no go, Daze and Force. I untap, argivian the moat, pass the turn. She gets a Dryad into play, turn. I lay a land, play Abeyance with the thought of forcing Moat through again, she Misdirects it to me. She pumps the dryad, I hide behind a Story Circle I got into play, she gets a Seal, disenchants it. I feebly play scroll rack. She laughs, and kills me.

Bleeding hearts of the world unite....

So I came in fourth. Dennis ended up beating Wilbur (who the heck plays Pandeburst?), so he went up against Summer. Dennis and I were both tired, so I let him have the morphling with the condition he'll buy me two pizza's in the future. Overall, I'm impressed with how well The Abyss worked. Sometimes I had to dig to get black or red mana, but I'm sure with some tweaking to the mana base I can smooth that out. This also gives me hope for when I go play at Neutral Ground later this month. WhiteTrash ruL3z!

PROPS:

The Abyss - Though you are filled with much hatred, I still love you.
Enlightened Tutor - You showed up just when I needed you. We shall never be seperated.
Black Lotus - For your shear insanity.
Blood Moon - Mountains!
Argivian Find - 10cents? You should be at least 25!

Summer - For finally getting a complete set of English Mana Drains. (Can I have your old ones?)
Dennis - Your an idiot. You play a bitch deck. You won. You have 3 freaking Mox Rubies now. Happy?
Josh - Wow, you got a Foil Rogue Kavu!

Slops:

Naturalize - I want some of the stuff they were on when they made this card. I hate you.
Serra's Sanctum - You showed up only twice the whole game. I hate you too.
Jester's Cap - I didn't use you. I hate you worst of all.

Me - For keeping hands against control I knew I shouldn't.
The guy who made a huge mess, then left it after two games cause he was losing - I'm going to hunt you down. I had to help clean that shit up.

Just to clear up, since I typed so lazy:

Round 4, Game 2:

I dropped an aura to destroy the Planar Void.

At the end, I didnt end up allowing Dennis to have the 3rd place prize. It was Wilbur. I suppose it would be hard to do such a thing seeing as Dennis took first.

If this is accurate, remember that Blood Moon took care of the Mishra's factory, and your Wasteland. It happens all the time.
Good job on the tournament, and don't sweat it; we all love the Abyss, deep down.

Well, I don't love The Abyss.

Of course, I don't run any decks with it.

Glad to know White Trash and I were helpful.

The Blood Moon-Wasteland-Mishra's thing in your report confused me as well.  Remember, Blood Moon will affect lands that come into play after the Blood Moon hits the board.

After going over my notes, plus Jordan remember it, yeah, that happened.  He had dropped the Mishra's and activated it the next turn, and I unthinkingly just smashed it with my Wasteland. I'll watch out for that next time. Thanks guys.

Thanks for the shout out Hatel!

Abyss is tech!

I'm glad to see that now there are two tourney reports with red/black sprinkled  parfait making top 4 in both cases.

One thing that I noticed prior to my last tourney is how uneffective orim's chant can be.

I was a big supprter of it, but now I think it belongs in the sideboard agaisnt control.

Hatel: I notice in your match-ups that the orim's chants seemed to come out a lot. (I have the same problem).

RND 1 vs Stompy -3 chant

RND 2 vs Sligh -4 chants

RND 3 vs Urphid chants stay

RND 4 vs Suicide -4 chants

RND 5 vs B/G Void -4 chants

RND 6 vs SuperGro  ID

top 8 Growatog chants stay

top 4 Supergro chants stay

That means for the swiss you boarded out the chants 4 out of 6 times.  2/3rds of the time you boarded out the chants.  It may be time to re-evaluate the chants in the main.  Tower was awesome for me last tourney

Chant is stall, not an answer.  Tower is an answer.  I think there are other cards that can go in the chant slots to fill the void better.

Again thanks Hatel for having the minerals to try out Abyss in a tournament.  Tourneys are the best place to playtest aren't they. No pressure, I'm only paying to play these rounds.

If you take a look at my Tourney report, you'll see I never run into a deck that had 3 creatures on the board at a given time. Heck, if they had 3 swinging I'd be dead.

I've gotten to do some more testing after practice today. People are bitching more about me playing Parfait with Abyss in it. I've found: Bitching + Parfait = You're doing the right thing.

The Abyss is def not   in Parfait. During the Tourny and today I sometimes spent a turn or two searching for a way to get black mana. I originally ran two Mountains, cutting one for a Swamp. Do I like the fact of running a three color parfait? Nope, but the fact that I'm better suited to handle creature rush first round appeals to me.

That and the fact I've had 3 people look up when I played Swamp/Abyss and go WTF! is priceless.

To sum up, I'm going to do lots of testing, and then see if I should keep it.

Hatel: Don't listen to the nay sayers!  If Abyss is good enough for keeper its even better for us since we can abuse it more!  And with seals/swords/aura artifact creatures can be taken care of too.  And tag team it with humility and from Multani, to nimble mongoose, even the mighty morphling falls  to abyss.

With land tax and artifact mana I have found that one mountain and one swamp are enough.  try running lotus petal.  its great with abyss and bloodmoon.  It also turns argivian find into a mana filter.  tap one white, bring back the petal, get a red or a black mana.  I also run a mox ruby and a jet to have more acceleration.  maybe try cutting a story circle and the serra sanctum to run a jet and a ruby.  with 3 moxen in the deck it lets you get out your bombs even quicker.

Some of The Abyss's other tech

Can kill Nether Void

Dystopia/Gloom/Anarchy do not kill it.

Since my opponets know I play abyss and bloodmoon I like to psyche them out.  Against Keeper "tax, plains, plains, oh mountain....".

If you're playing against a Void deck, they have a Nether Void out and you get to seven mana, something went horribly, horribly wrong on at least one of your ends.  Aside from that, Abyss does make Sacred Mesa's upkeep 2WW... so watch for that.  Otherwise, I think it's a great idea.

Of course, now you're going to have people say "you've already got black for Abyss, why not Demonic Tutor?  and while you're at it, add an island or two for Ancestral Recall, and a forest for ... well... um... nevermind the forest.  " etc.  I think maybe Parfait wants another tutor... and maybe it doesn't.  Testing must determine this.

How do you figure upkeep on sacred is 2WW? You put the abyss on the stack targeting a pony, then put mesa on the sac. Sac the targeted pony to mesa, abyss ability then resolves and fizzles. You can use an existing token, or create one at your opponents end turn.

If there aren't any tokens, stack mesa, then abyss. Abyss fizzles, create your token, sac to mesa.

sorry if my above post was a little harsh, but i was just sooooo excited when i stumbled upon parfait because white has always been my fav. color! I just wanted a good pure white deck (i HATE white wennie)  But now all these new colors are moving in!!! (I'm not saying the changes are bad) I just wanted a white deck! I've been trying to find sutable replacements for Blood Moon, and now The Abyss... slim pickins'! If anybody has some suggestions please post them! But great job to all who helped parfait have a place in this world!

I sorta agree w/ OMIFUK! in the sense that people are going to start throwing colors and cards into parfait like theres no tomarrow! Thats why i say its gonna be the next kepper, because soon it will have 4 or 5 colors!

Blue - Drawing power/maybe counterpower
Red - Bloodmoon/Seismic Assault
Green - (this is how enchantress came about) Sterling grove
Black - The Abyss/Tutors

Well parfait doesn't need blue it already has tax/rack

Enchantress has the weakness of having lots of non basic lands.  Though green would give sylvan but again the tax rack is supposed to do that job anyway.

Red only gives parfait bloodmoon, nothing else is really needed from red.

Tutors from black would be nice but I don't know if they are necessary.

Parfait's strength lies in its redundancy and immunity to non basic land hate.  That is why it will not become keeper.  Parfait can run two splash colors with no problem since both of the cards are great bombs and are enchantments so you can always do the tax over the top, drop, and replenish method to get them into play.

I don't see parfait running toward more than a two color splash Wbr.

WhiteTrash is spot on about Wbr. There really isn't any need to bring other cards in (at least for the moment). Red's one card in parfait is... an enchantment. Black's one card is... an enchantment. I've seen a Parfait deck that tried to run to many cards (blue for ancestral and something else; black for Tutors) and it just belly upped. Btw, WT, I've dropped one of my Orim's main board (replaced one Abyance sb), and dropped Aura Fracture for 1 main and 1 sb Ivory Tower. And while this isn't new, with Abyss, it seems to have better synergy IMHO (keeping you alive for the abyss to work).

After a good deal of testing, I'm impressed with how well Abyss fits into Parfait. Wrath was great against regenerators and such, but with 2 Humility main deck, this never seems a problem.

Ok the following are not truly serious cards, they are cards that have fun possibilities.  Ones that no one would expect from parfait.  Some of these may be interesting for some people's particular metagames.

Black adds some fun cards that have possibilities.

Megrim-for the type 2 decks that eventually try to cross over.  Also makes pitch stuff like zombie infestation and Top suck...

Chains of Mephistopheles-fun tech against control, and since rack is not technically drawing cards it will not effect you.

Engineered Plague-the type one ratings saver!

Red gives some interesting entries.

Citadel of Pain-alternate kill vs control.  Of course if they get the morph out they can just dump all their mana into him.  But then they will be tapped out.

Scald-punish those dirty blue playing bastards!

Price of Glory-oh yeah!

again these are just thoughts, some interesting, most just funny
