This came up the other day when a good friend of mine came home from Syracuse-
How many of you guys listen to either The Red Hot Chili Peppers or Sublime actively (as in, own more than one or two songs)? It suprised her when nobody, NOBODY, in her dorm recognized Santeria... Play that for near anybody out here and they'll probably sing along.

I personally dislike Sublime and the Chili Peppers. They may very well be talented musicians, but I can't get into that kind of music Sublime is. The Chili Peppers are just ...bleh.

I liked Blood Sugar Sex Magik when I was in 7th grade... Sublime is really not at all what I would consider to be good. Actually, I think they're painfully overrated.
I typically listen to things like The Sins of Thy Beloved and Symphony X. More mainstream stuff I like is early Metallica, Iron Maiden, Dio, and other high end metal with quality musicianship.
Note the distinct lack of things like Korn, Rage Against the Machine, and all derivative bands.

Here in Seattle we just got a new radio station that plays all that old-school stuff that was cool when I was in junior high: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Chilli Peppers, etc.. Of course Seattles kinda known for weirdo music and people.

My Sublime CD got stolen a couple of years ago and I haven't gotten around to picking up a new copy yet...I'd say it would easily be in the top 10 best CD/Albums of the 90's (hmm, that would be a good topic....). I dig on Real Big Fish too, solid stuff.

See, I'm really getting the feeling that the music really can't be separated from the place. I honestly didn't expect many people to be Sublime fans, simply because you guys don't have the place to associate with the music. There's something very peculiar about Southern California's music, a particular feel that I haven't yet been able to put my finger on. Spending two years in Huntington Beach (nearly the same as Long Beach) really gives you an appreciation for the people that are the songs.
I think the Chili Peppers' music is less associated to the place, and that's why it has wider appeal, but even then... Additionally, I think the Chili Peppers are the better musicians, with the wider range of style and emotion. I really can't recommend the Californication CD enough.
Az- I've heard a fair deal of Symphony X, and certainly Metallica and Iron Madien, and I really have to say the one thing that I don't like is the repetition that you usually find with Metal. The lack of harmony is a rather large problem, though less apparent with some groups (Symphony X).
Edit- We got Real Big Fish to play our prom- One of my best friends is actually best friends with their manager, and was able to pimp it up for prom. Very very cool.

I saw Symphony X live, it was awesome.
I live in the west coast and I still find Sublime and RHCP overrated. Godspeed You! Black Emperor could kick BOTH their asses in a fight to the death useing instruments AT THE SAME TIME, as they are a large group of ninja Canadians. Ninja Canadians.
Shame on you! Forgetting the exclamation point. I didn't know there were any other fans on here. -Matt[/color]

Just to be weird, I guess.
Is that the band with the CD called 'stick your dicks in the air like antennas to heaven' or something similar? Never heard anything by them. Is it like Sublime and such at all?
[EDIT] Oh, so THAT's where you got your sig, Matt!

It's "Lift your skinny fists like antennas to heaven" and no, it's about as far from Sublime as you could hope to get.
