Ok…. Sunday morning. I’m going with some friends to the tournament. At first there wasn’t going to be enough room for me but we decided to take two cars. Friend gets me first and we pick up another friend. He has never played in a type 1 tournament before so we hand him a pretty good sligh deck and say good luck (he goes 3-3, not bad for his first tournament.)
We drive an hour. And a half. And then we can’t find the place. lol. There’s no sign saying the store is in the back of the place underground. Luckily our other friends got there already so we find it eventually. We’re also relieved there’s a Wendys right across the street.
I was going to play something different for once, Type 1 Food Chain Goblins, but the dealer there who we talked to the previous night couldn’t find the stuff I needed to finish the deck. I ended up playing my normal sui deck, after maindecking some hate of course. With darksteel legal I was expecting to see Mud and Stacks all over the place.
Of the 40 people, I would say that half were locals. They brought their regular decks. They weren’t horrible decks, just weird. I wasn’t expecting half the decks there.
During deck reg, I drop 2 nantuko shades and smash them into the ground with my feet, on purpose of course. Before the rounds start, we realize that the 5-8th prizes were better then the 3rd or 4th prize. 18 packs or 9 packs of darksteel is better then a Singing Tree or a signed 7th edition birds.
Ok, now on to the stories:
Round 1: Playing against Micah.
Game 1: He wins the die roll and drops a swamp. I smile. I love sui black. I drop a swamp and ritual out stuff. We trade hippies and I lose shades to edicts but then he’s got no answers to two negators.
Game 2: Usual beginnings, he drops an ensnaring bridge. I hadn’t sided in my kegs so I’m debating to scoop or not because I have no answers for the bridge. I topdeck a braids and play it. I have twice as many permaments as he does. He sacs his swamps, his hand fills up. Shades go in.
Round 2: Playing against (sorry forgot, but he made top 8). He’s playing Back to Basics Hulk Tog but I had no idea what he was playing at the time.
Game 1: Swamp Dark Ritual Hymn to Tourach. Force of will. Dar kRitual Negator. Go. He drops a land and brainstorms go. Beat for 5. Brainstorm, land go. Beat for 5, strip mine. Drop mox sapphire go. Beat for 5 go. Draw go. Beat for 5. Game. (or something close to that)
Game 2: Draw-Land-Go. Land-Ritual-Duress-I-Go-Crazy-Later. He never plays a tog.
Round 3: Rich (I believe, he won. He played slaver with no workshops, cool guy though). He’s beaten my two friends the previous rounds… I tell him I must avenge them and I’m playing maindeck hate. Of course he’s playing the non-artifact heavy version so my null rods don’t do that much
Game 1: He admits this was a hard match up for him. Hand discard, graveyard removal (wretches, the shiny FNM ones), and then beats. We side for the next match.
Game 2: I throw in two planar voids. I drop a negator and he bolts it. Whoa. I try to mess his hand and mana base but before I can do all that, he plays a lotus, uses it, welds the lotus back, uses it. Drops a platinum angel. I play Braids. Hopefully this will work like it did against ensnaring bridge. It doesn’t.
Game 3: Try it again. He tinkers his sol ring for an angel. I play a powder keg. We laugh because in 7 turns I’ll be dead. We also laugh because I played a null rod the turn before. He beats me to 8 life and burns me up.
Round 4 Playing against (I guessed tog)
Game 1: Yay I win. No idea what he’s playing right now. Guessing tog, I side out rods.
Game 2: Impulse on a stick. Errr…. I lose a bit after to 2 soldier tokens.
Game 3: Drain one of my negators, drop 2 angels. I try to topdeck a powder keg but that usually doesn’t work.
Round 5: Guy playing UR Landstill (the landstill I hate because it plays bolts whilst I have negators). I’m 2-2-0 and he’s 2-1-1. I keep getting paired up and he asks me for the win. We talk about it, chances of me making top 8 and etc.
Game 1: He gets to play 4 standstills. Ouch. Massive card advantage anyone?
Game 2: Murdered him. No standstills this game.
Game 3: Murdered him. No standstills this game either. He dropped a 2 maze of ith, I waste one and a lone wasteland couldn’t hold back a shade, a wretch, and a masticore. Null rod kept his disk inactive.
Round 6: After some uhhh… discussion with people. My final record is 2-3-0. The guy I was suppose to play drops. Shame. I wanted to play.
...
MISC STUFF:
The guy in the other forum area saying he came in 9th with TPS actually came in 10th, a friend of mine was 9th.
Another friend playing fully tricked out Mud lost to Cathodian with bonesplitter. (point and laugh)
I was hoping to play against Oshawa Stompy so I could see how sui does against it. I had sideboard perishes.
...
Also because I forgot to include it, here's my decklist:
15x Swamp 4x Wasteland 1x Strip mine
1x Demonic Tutor 1x Demonic Consultation 1x Mox Jet (proxy) 1x Black Lotus (proxy) 4x Dark Ritual
4x Hippie 4x Negator 4x Shades 4x Duress 4x Hymn to Tourach
1x Sol Ring 3x Null Rod
2x Phyrexian Arena 2x Braids, Cabal Minion
2x Withered Wretch 2x Sinkhole
SB: 2x Masticore 4x Powder Keg 3x Planar Void 2x Perish 4x Contagion
It's sort of suppose to be a budget deck. And would have done better in certain matchups if I would have been able to draw decent hands.
