I am curious aboutwhy you chose to play Type 1.
First, I live in Charleston, SC. I am originally from the Binghamton, NY area (Endicott to be precise). In Charleston, we once had a healthy Type 1 community. We had a monthly tournament that would get between 24 to 32 players, and a P9 card was usually offered for first prize. Unfortunately, a few left due to the Navy and a few more left because of financial woes. This led to lower quality tournaments, so our guests from Savannah and Atlanta stopped coming.
We will try to regrow Type 1 here. Our usual Type 1 organizer (Gilthanas01 on TMD) was so dismayed he stopped running tournaments. I have tried to bring new players into the fold by running Highlander tournaments (these are more fun for the casual player, and also give players some kind of tournament experience).
What suggestions do you have ? I ask of new (experienced voices are also welcome) players, because I would like know to why you were willing to overcome some of the much discussed obstacles for Type 1. What drew you to Type 1?
BTW e will probably start allowing some proxies, so please refrain from offering that singular piece of advice.

Well I too am from the Binghamton, NY area. (Delhi to be exact) I was all casual due to not many players and not many cards shops were around. Now that I'm in Mass, I'm all T1 b/c of no choice really. All the little kids just throw w/e cards they had together and went to the tournaments. *shrugs* Now I'm building T1 decks b/c their harder to do, and to make one work against the other good T1 decks out there is enough for me to do right now. As to helping you attract more ppl, I can't help you there. Our local tournaments stopped due to the fact that they weren't big enough.

I started playing type 1 exclusively because I love the explosivness of plays that are possible with a bigger pool of cards. That and the challenge of having to be ready for any deck of all levels. It's a challenge. It's like playing basketball in high school on the team versus playing the same 2 guys during lunch.

1. T1=Borken 2. I don't have to chase every single "good" card, that happens to go into the deck of the week only to find it worthless the next 3. I like the mental challenges, play 4 color control decks and see how many options you have, in fact play Big O what is seemingly a simple aggro deck and see how many choices you get with bazaar, squee, and sotf etc. 4. I don't like combat math. 5. The metagame is amazing sooo many decks to play or get ready for, and there is no deck of the week. Metas change at a speed where I can learn many decks 6. Cards don't rotate out!!!!!

I play Type One because there are so many interesting strategies in the large card pool that metagame decks can succeed. This is the only format where tier three decks are potentially relevant, and I'm one of the stalwarts who thinks that this will always be true.
Also, it's much harder to find a niche and gain world recognition in the Pro formats, simply because they're so developed by people who have large financial incentives to do so.

The ruination of Block and Extended formats and the lack of Standard support over that past few years was the initial reasons I started playing again.
Now I actually really like the format and I think that diversity of possibilities is the best part of the format. No archetype is terrible. I also have to say that the community here at TMD and in New England in general is a great plus as well. The people are generally of above average intelligence, have some meaningful things to say, and are not the barns that most of the people that chase PT slots are in New England.

I started to play recently because it looked so damn cool. What other format can you say you have the most valuable card in the games and get to play with along almost any other cards you own. Someone brought this up before but the non-rotating scene is a huge plus. I play type 2 a lot but it is so boring because everyone plays the same deck (gobs or affinity). Type 1 just isn't boring and their are so many cool broken cards. How can you not play it?

Most people honestly play Type One because it's easier. The best Type One players are good PTQ players, whereas you may in fact run into U.S. Nationals players or better at say Regionals. There's a real difference between 'good' players that PTQ a lot and those that win Nationals - it's not that often that you see like Joshua Wagener.US National Team.

I started playing Type one back in the hay day after I saw some of the regulars playing. The speed was unbelivable, and I loved it from the start. I have to agree that it is nice to take off 7 months (like I just did) and come back to very few changes in the format, or even the deck that I currently play. In general its always a higher level of competition in T1 also, there are fewer casual players, thus a higher level of challenge. I have always felt that I was a T1 player first and foremost and play T2 when there isnt a large T1 event/players going on. And, on a final note there are just so many wicked fun decks to play in T1 its sick.

I started because I'm a collector. I like trading for better cards and suddenly found myself with two dozen duals, sneak attacks and such. A few around here play T1 for fun, so I created my T1 sneak-attack deck (average T3 kill WITHOUT ANY P9!!!). I then later suddenly found myself to be in possession of four mana drains and a library, so I figured "what the hell" and became my areas first (and, so far one out of two) serious players. I keep playing because the format rules and there are still decent counter-spells (I'ma controle-freak and no counter-spell in T2 maks me hate the format). I like the enourmous card-pool and the fact that anything is playable, even a sneak-attack deck! Sideboard four pyroblast and four red elemntal blast and it works against keeper, etc. It's a format that has the answers to anything and, in turn, the answers to the answers. It's challenging and mind-boggeling and incredibly fun to play! As for your tournament, start playing T1 with anyone in the area. Teach them the format and teach them how to trade for good T1 staples. Basically, make new players enjoy the format and appreciate it's diversity. Doing that, and helping them get the cards they need (either by helping them trade or, at the very least, teaching them how to trade for them), not to mention helping them with deck-construction to fit their budgets will soon get you new T1 players. With new players, you'll be enough for tournaments again, which should, in turn, attract older players. It's what my firend and I are currently doing, and it seems to be helping ~Tank

I decided to play T1 when I went to a Standard tourney as a kid and found out I couldn't play with my Hippies.(This was just after 4th had rotated out.) I swore off Standard right then because I hated everything I would have had to replace all of my obviously very good cards with.
Also, the people who play T1 around here are much cooler than the kids who play whatever it is they play.

It just fun. And it reminds me of the early days of magic when i first started to play. Plus i'm older and can offard the cards now, so its a Quarter Life Crisis thing too. Plus the Meta is great right now. And there tends to be 20 different decks you play against. And since i don't get a lot of play outside of tournments i'm still learning and getting better.

I started playing cause I have a couple friends that play it. I started getting into it more recently due to the price increase for new sets and Standard was getting stale for me once again. Plus I realized T1 is alot cheaper than Standard in the long run, so I eventually plan on leaving the Standard scene.

I started playing Type I mainly because of the Extended rotation. Also, in my tournament experiences, I've found Type I players to be less cut-throat than during events of other formats.

After having my massive collection of foils risk being devalued into being worthless at the end of the last rotation, I decided to make the switch over to Type 1 and never look back.
I have also noted that play skill is required in this format, and it can be expensive. So the local group of annoying FNM players don't frequent the Type 1 gathering, giving a better environment for enjoying the game.
I greatly enjoy playing against adults.....not 12 year olds. I love being able to go on vacation and not have my deck be woth .02 cents.
More than that though, I like the lack of pressure.

Because Balance and Mind Twist are legal in such a format! Damn skippy! Mind Twists make me feel like a sexy bitch. Lets not even get into FBB Twists... The reason for me was the card pool; I wanted to play with many older cards or cards that were banned in other formats.(I hate you DCI) And it makes me way cooler than everyone else!

I play T1 mostly because there are so many options of what to play; I dabble a little in Extended, but in T2, there's basically the dominant deck and the deck that hoses it. In T1, there are many more archetypes that are competetive. Plus, I like Force of Will.

Type 2 is the equivalent of racing with Honda Civics and Jetta's, with the occasional Chevette thrown in the mix. Type 1 is racing with Vipers, Z-28's and Corvettes. I hate Civics.

Type 1 is like playing 5 card draw in poker. Everything else just seems like playing War.

I started playing Type One because it is the environemnt that requires the most amount of mental exercise and strategizing in my opinion. Desipte the ridiculous speed of the environment, there aare a lot of things to remember to sucessfuly win in the environment. That, and the prizes AND the competition are generally ebtter...
