Change of Fortune
R
Sorcery
Choose land or nonland and reveal any number cards in your hand of the chosen kind. Shuffle those cards into your library, then draw that many cards.

I saw someone typing "CoF" and I didn't know what it meant (turns out it's Cloud of Faeries), so I was brainstorming, trying to think of phrases CoF could stand for, and I came up with this one. And the card followed from there.

It's like having the old mulligan rules back! This would be pretty good with Land Tax, but not moreso than Scroll Rack. Also, this has a sort of random effect (you're trading a known hand for an unknown, random hand), so it fits red very well. It helps to smooth out draws a TON, at the cost of a card. It can also get rid of mana flood partway through the game. This aspect has some tricky subtelties to it, though - if you start drawing lands 4, 5, and 6, do you play them out as normal - or do you hold them back in case you topdeck a Change of Fortune?

The nature of the card is such that it loses 50-75% of its effectiveness after the first turn, so it really must be playable on the first turn (i.e., casting cost of R).

If you want old mulliginning back, shouldn't it be worded to only work when you are allowed to mulligan (like Serum Powder does?)?

Not really. This isn't exactly the old mulligan rule, it just reminded me of it. It does exactly what I want it to - help you out when your luck's gone bad and the deck spits up all land or all spells.

Woah, this shouldn't be a 24 hour clock yet.  Of the 2 people that expressed an opinion toward this card, only 1 person agreed with it.  That is only 50% acceptance.  This better not be added with only 50% acceptance.  Wait until there are more posts where people agree with this please.

No one has given me any reason to think it's not fine.

I think that it is a bit too good.  I think that you should still be able to choose land or nonland, but you shouldn't be able to choose which ones you send back.  That seems more red.  Red is all or nothing...

That's fine. Clock resumed. In the future, if you have a problem with a card, you need to come right out and say so, not dance around the topic.

I previously said what I thought what was wrong with the card.  It's one of the first responses...

No, you didn't. You said "Mebby you shouldn't be able to choose which of the land or nonland cards you send back..." Nowhere in there did you say why it should be that way, or why it shouldn't be the way I originally posted.

Hi Matt,

hey, this is a pretty cool idea.  My only concern is that it has the potential of being broken.

It reminds me of Windfall in that you can refill your hand, and it acts like Timetwister (put the cards back into your library and then draw new cards).

The card is balanced in that you can only swap out cards of a type (i.e., all land), but i am unclear if you can send back "4 Elves" or if they have to be "4 Llanowar Elves".  If you can reshuffle "4 Elves", then this card may be too powerful.  You could run a deck full of Elves or Goblins, along with 4 of your creation, and cycle your deck a few times while drawing fresh cards.  The potential of this in a deck with a lot of draw spells could be devistating.

With the built-in limitations that you gave it (Sorcery/Cards of a Kind), i think it is close to being playable (without being broken).  I would suggest making it's casting cost 1R, instead of just R.

I miss the old mulligan rule.

Dave.

I'm not sure what you mean by the elf thing. You either send back all your lands, or all your nonland cards from your hand. It's not that good for combo, because it costs you a card, just to shuffle back part of your hand.

Hm.  Ok, you're right.  I thought "...of the chosen kind..." meant the type of card it was (elf, cleric, etc.).

Then it's more powerful than i thought, because now you can drop some cards on the table and give yourself a one-sided Windfall.

I think it needs to cost 1R to make it truly balanced.

I'm not worried, because unlike a Draw-7, you can't draw more than you put back. This is more like Winds of Change than Windfall.
