You can read all about it here:

http://www.starcitygames.com/php/news/expandnews.php?Article=6897

Quote
Blue is essential in any environment that supports combo, if only for Force of Will. Red is also strong, with Red Elemental Blast, Fire / Ice, and Rack and Ruin all-powerful contenders in the race for the win. The field was set for U/R Fish. I did not play U/R Fish. Why? I found that it had terrible matchups against Stax (of which only one or two copies showed up, evidently), and that I knew people would be bored reading yet another tourney report about the blue weenies. So instead, I ran U/R Landstill, a deck with a much stronger game against artifact-based decks and still sporting the hella-fun Mishra's Factory beating.

I apologize for some of the flaws in the article-- see the discussion thread there for full explanations of some of the wordier parts. I chalk it up to pounding it out late at night before I went on holiday and the play errors as the result of feeling ill that day, fighting an excedrin headache (as those of you in the tourney already know!) and feeling that natural high of doing so well. This was the third time that I T8ed at the Columbus tourneys.

Enjoy!

I resolve two Null Rods. Steve resolves Memnarch(!), a creature far larger than mine and with enough mana behind it to take control of everything I held dear. I found no need to prolong the inevitable and moved on to game 3.

How can Memnarch steal stuff under Null Rods?

Other than that, congrats on your second place at the tourney.

When someone says they spilt a mox of some other card, it usually means they sold it back to the store and split the money, or if one of the 2 people who split needs said card, some sort of deal will take place between the splitters where the one gets the card and the other gets about half of what it's worth...

That was a poorly worded part of the article. The Memnarch is bigger than all of my creatures, and I had only had Factory beats going on. I had used up most of my burn and couldn't face the clock. He IS a 4/5 beater as well, even if he doesn't steal stuff. Pentavus sucks a whole lot as well.

That was one of the most enjoyable reports I have read in quite some time.  Excellent article and great job with the tournament.  Props.

recognized the importance of taking out Standstills for this matchup, because he can match me Strip effect for Strip effect, burn for burn, and manland for manland

While its true that they can match you strip for strip, doesn't Urfish usually only run 2-3 conclaves?  On top of that, Landstill has more burn, and usually more stifles (for the strips), so you win out here as well.  I'm not saying you shouldn't still take out the standstills (I've never tested either way), but it seems this is the wrong reason for doing so.

The Null Rods were a mistake to sideboard in, and I changed my plan after that to reflect my newfound knowledge. I changed them back for Disks, a card that would demonstrate its usefulness time and time again that day.

If you're not going to bring in null rods against slaver, then why board them at all?  I know they're good against draw7.dec, but I don't really think thats enough of a metagame consideration to warrant four sideboard slots.

As far as null rod against slaver, its tough because they should be more effective than disk at slowing them down, provided you also can bring in a few rack and ruin/shattering pulse, and just drain their fat and burn their welders.  However, they also make you more susceptible to chalice for 2.  Any Slaver players care to comment?

Overall though, I echo everyone's comments that you've written a great report.  The commentary on 'combos' made my day.  Congrats on making the finals.

Agree with G.I. if you don´t put them in against Slavers, then kick them out. Against storm you can put Chalices. At X=0 they do more or less what Rods do and at X=1 (the same price as a Rod) they do a lot more. Also they´re not bad in multiples.

The lone Mountain: would´t you like to play a Mire/Foothills in stead of a Flooded Strand to be able to find it more consistently?
