Today we had a rockin' 5-proxy T1 tourney for a Mox Jet. Before I get started however, I just want to say a few things. Today we almost didn't have enough people to give away a mox for first (we sported a meager 21 players)- and I think this is ridiculous. We have a solid metagame going with great prize support, an extremely friendly and comfortable atmosphere, as well as free pizza at every tournament! There have been the odd judging issues now and then, but all in all its a great store and I urge everyone who hasn't made the trip to at least give it a shot- you'll totally look forward to it again next month.

That said, I headed up deck registration at the event, something we hadn't tried before. I'll post up the top eight decks, as well as anything cool or interesting. First and Second Split the Mox Jet and Abyss, not entirely sure how they worked it out. Looking through the Deck Reg sheets, I'm proud to say there wasn't a single scrub deck! Notables include belcher, tons of slaver, and an Enchantress.

On to the report:

Not much in the way of pre tourney antics. I get there early having already thought ahead of time we wouldn't get enough players for the prize structure- but a good problem solver ended up coming with a great solution to the weak attendance. I was playing the same deck I always play, so I don't have much to say about it, except that I tried new ideas in my sideboard which suck, terribly.

Round 1: Mike O'Neil with 'Shop based Slaver:
Game 1 I go broken relatively quickly, I think turn 3, with at least one Duress/Unmask in there.
Game 2 doesn't go so well and Platinum beats do me in after I think I've ended the game in a draw via Worldgorger loop- then he notices he has Pentavus in play and enough mana to send it to the grave, ending the loop.
Game 3 I get him to a negative life position, but while Platinum stares me down. I manage to Animate a Welder to remove it.
2-1, (1-0)

Round 2: Dom w/ his Artifact Tubbies deck
Game 1 I go off pretty quickly.
Game 2 I have a turn 2 kill hand, but he boarded in 3 cards and I'm fearing crypts. My hand is Lotus, Swamp, Ritual, Dragon, 3 other cards. I go for the hardcast dragon, and his Juggs have to attack into it. 3 turns later he's been killed by a hardcasted Dragon.
2-0, (2-0)

Round 3: Eric ELD w/ Control Slaver
I literally play Eric at least once every tournament, and don't exactly have a very impressive track record vs. him so far. Looks like today isn't the day for this to change :/
Game 1 I think I've got it, but he Slavers me and I've got Spoils in my hand. I volunteer him to name Spiny Starfish.
Game 2 I just keep a bad hand and ELD's deck cutting abilities absolutely shit on my play skills (blah blah.. lack thereof).
0-2, (2-1)

------------------ Kerz, don't edit above here-----------------------------
Round 4: Kerz w/ Control Slaver
Game 1 I go land, Duress. I hope he thinks I'm about to pass the turn, but I lay Crypt, Lotus, Ritual, then play Buried Alive and Necromancy.
Game 2: I unmask him turn 1 and go nuts turn 2.
-------------------------Kerz, don't edit below here---------------------------
2-0, (3-1)

Round 5: I'm paired up with Yushuo Low. I sat next to him round 4, and I'm really confident I can crap all over his deck, what with me playing combo and maindecking Null Rods, while him rocking Artifact aggro. He obviously wants to draw, I'm unsure as I really am confident I can easily take the match. I check out standings, and think I have basically a 50/50 chance of either getting paired up with him again or Mat in the first T8 round, so I begrudgingly accept the draw because my previous match ended so fast I really wanted to play.  Razz
0-0 (3-1-1)

Top 8, Round 1: Pat Broderick w/ Hulk
Game 1 he sees broken stuff, as well as game 2. I guess that's what happens when you play with good cards. :/

After Pat beats Mike, we head over to 99. Actually we waste a solid hour before we make the 20 yard walk. Once we get there, I heavily abuse the free water privilege. All in all it was a really fun tourney and I enjoyed myself more than I have at other tourneys. Kerz has got some pictures of the tourney happenings and the extremely awesome store, and we also found out that Pringles are the most erotic snacks around. Think: it's the tube, not the chips! After Kerz PR1nG0wn5 Chris playing Enchantress we realize we might have taken it too far. With Chamberlain's hot sister.

Props:
-A bunch of people for playing almost identical decks: typing is for chumps anyway
-Everyone who played a cool, innovative deck at the tourney
-Everyone who made a serious trip to get here- especially Kerz, Matrix, ELD, and the New Hampshire boys.
-All my Cape Cod Crew friends for being cool
-The waitress at 99 for passing the extreme test of people skills that I am
-Chamberlain's sister for being so out-of-control hot. giggity giggity gig-it-tee

Eric filled it out in Silver Pen again? lmao. Anyways I didn't get to play, but I came by after work. Seemed liked everyone had a good time though when I got there. I'm pretty sure what we ended up doing for prize structure was that $200 was first and you could pay 50 more for the Jet since attendence was so low. I think 1st and 2nd ended up walking away with $130 each or something like that instead though since they drew. We should keep doing the deck list thing, even though you guys didn't actually do deck checks yet I heard  Very Happy  Although I don't think it mattered with that few people. We also need someone from the Cape to be able to post in the tournament forum so we stop making Kowal do it.  Also someone needs to have our next tourney date changed, since it's the same as Waterbury and no one one including Cape Codders will go  Rolling Eyes It's for a Saphire so that would be kinda sad if we couldn't get people for that.

It's Chet, I'm pretty sure I mentioned that to someone tonight  Very Happy Didn't really expect to top 8 tonight, hell, I thought I wasn't going to be playing this morning.  All in all, I played a lot of drawn out games, and edged in some wins.  Maybe Gay/r will get some respect now =]

Edit: oh yeah, and I'm broke.  Where the hell else are you going to get a free pizza all to yourself at 10:30? Smile

Hey, thanks for the tourney report road trippin', I noticed that you played two seperate matches vs. Control Slaver that went exactly the opposite in result, beating Kerz 2-0 and losing to ELD 0-2, what is your take on the general matchup between your deck and Control Slaver? From the sound of your report of the match with ELD you seem to feel that you got unlucky w/ELD finding a spoils nestled away in your hand as well as your decision to keep a bad hand. At the same time you attribute your success over Kerz to a pretty broken hate filled draw. Were both of these matches anomalies of the matchup in your opinion?

Thanks for doing the paperwork for me John.  Sucks I couldn't make it down there, but on the plus side I'm actually prepared for the organizing the Hadley tournament this weekend, and not the usual sort of over-rushed.

Sorry i couldn't make it guys.   Cus of the whole lovely car accident i had no ride to get there on time or get back.   On a more positive note i made 50 bucks in two hours.   Anyways.   Good job on the placing John, Mike, Chet, and Chamberlain.

With md Null Rods, and cards that come in for my auto-killers (Spoils) I feel pretty good about the matchup. I tested it a lot, and I seemed to take a fair amount of matches (I'd call it at least 60/40 before the tournament). The problem is, although my deck has a decent record vs. Slaver, the hard matchup is me vs. ELD.  Sad

I was actually under the illusion you were not going to say anything untill I read the props. Good job on finish, fifty percent of the top eigh were Cape Codders themselves. I think I figured out why, because we have such an aggro intensive environment we adapt to it before the tournament itself, where as off-cappers are prepared for competitive magic, not random sillyness and aggro. Including enchantress (which top-decks so good I want to bring him to Vegas). Good report, especailly the "Kerz don't edit here" sign. It made me "snorkle" due to me having a cold  Crying or Very sad  .

Not to put a damper on your theory, but it could be because almost none of the usual out-of-towners arrived.

Kerz, you let me down.

Ben, I relize I let you down, but look at the game that kept me out of top eight:

Turn 1 win with Duress
Turn 2 win witth Unmask

I obviously couldn't outplay that.  I'm not angry, but there was nothing I could do, at all. Maybe if I had 2x Fow...but that would cause me to be almost as big a miser as my opponent  Razz .

Good job Jon, I'll see what i can do about getting those results on other sites.

Just a point about our match.  When I caught you with spoils in hand, it could have been prevented.  The previous turn, you animated a verdant force with a worldgorger in the yard.  Had you animated the worldgorger, then after one cycle animated the Verdant force, you would have had a swamp open on my turn.  You could have cast spoils for swamp on my turn, and you would have had just a necromancy in hand.  If you remember, I agonized a bit over slavering or not.  I almost didn't slaver, as I was almost convinced you had nothing good in your hand.  In the end, I figured it was worth it to take a shot and hope to topdeck something on your turn.

Congrats on the top 8.  Thanks for the props and the family guy referance.  No need for the visual with the pringles.
